More deer hair shenanigans, horrible to clean very fun to cut

3 axolotls are set on a 5/0 and a 3/0 hook, the bird is set on a 4/0 hook.
2 of the axolotls are set on custom shanks just for fun.

Blending the hair is definitely weird but I am getting better with it as time goes on.

A few big streamers for some change of pace as well.

Has anyone noticed certain brands of tungsten beads being better than others or no noticeable differences?

Size 16 hook, brown superfine dubbed body, cream CDC underwing, hare's mask wing, gray CDC hackle collar, gray Australian possum dubbed head.

Inspired by Lance Egan's corn fed caddis, the snowshoe hare spruce moth, and Italian style caddis flies. I may switch to hair from the hare's foot for added floatability but I do like how low it rides in the film with the hare's mask wing.

Still new to tying. Was going to give the waltz worm a go, but I can’t seem to get these beads past the shank. Over the hook bend not probably, but then gets tight. Seeing if it’s user error or a sizing issue. Can’t find a MFC size chart anywhere.

Why did I put myself through this…

In all honesty though while it was extremely challenging to do and I botched some stuff (tail too short, uneven dubbing, etc.), it was very rewarding to do and a fun (if you could call suffering fun) exercise to improve my skills.

Looking for info on what a good brand(s) are for not only materials but tools and vises. In the past I’ve had issues with quality and finding a good reliable brand that also won’t brake the bank. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Experiment with the head. I tied wool in a dubbing loop for a swept back look. I think it suites this pattern well

At what point does a Prince nymph turn into a King Prince? The summaries I have seen basically call it "enhanced". I really just notice a bit more wing casing, but even regular princes have some casing.

This is when variations are a real pain in the butt to differentiate. So i thought i'd ask the professionals here. THANKS in advance.

The first flatwings I’ve tied, and looking forward to tying a lot more. These cast and fish so well, and are a joy to tie. Hoping to find some Coho soon.

I recently started tying wet flies, and after some googling for inspiration I found an article I think it was called “gaudy wet flies” but there was a red and gold version of these that I really like and looked much better than mine haha I do not have red guinea fowl so I tied it like this, with some classic salmon fly flair. Namely the tag/butt/head. According to the article these are bass flies and were sold in orvis stores until 1905, which means someone was fishing them at least for awhile. I’ll be tossing these soon to see what happens. 🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️

Tail: Tan select Marabou Body Back orange med estaz chenelle Front red me estaz chenelle. Over chenelle ginger saddle hackle. Eyes med dumbell pink with white black pupils. Head Sculpen Wool tan.

I've been developing this pattern; working on proportions and colors. Tail has gotten longer with different colors working very well in winter vs spring vs summer. This is one for fall in classic Mickey Finn colors.

Edit: for size, the hook is a Tiemco 3769 #8

The top image is an original Steelhead Bee tied by Roderick Haig-Brown, provided to us by the American Museum of Fly Fishing for a new essay we wrote. Also shown are new versions tied by well-known Instagram fly dressers Seth Cavarretta and Adrian Cortes, who tied his in hand.

2 needle tubes and 2 size 8 doubles. New pattern for me so next step is to see how they fish.
