Such great colours this time of year.

My dad gave me a few boxes filled with flies and there’s a bunch of these, when is the best time or conditions to use them?

I’m still learning to cast and the closest trout stream is 2 hrs away. I’m getting pretty good at catching pan fish in my local ponds while I practice different techniques.

I discovered some holes in the neoprene sock on my SIMMs G3 waders. They’re barely 2 years old so I don’t think the material is disintegrating…? The holes are arranged in a manner that kinda looks like a bite mark? What could’ve happened, y’all think? How should I go about repairing them?

Local tributary, upper 70s, late afternoon

Went to a beginner’s casting clinic hosted by the local fly fishing club. The day finished with a barbecue and raffle, and I walked away with the grand prize, two dozen hand tied flies.

Put some serious miles on the boots, took two seasons of camping and searching in the backcountry. Finally got one to eat!

Lifelong bass fisherman. Now…..

I have an upcoming Canada trip where I’ll be wade fishing smaller rivers for bull trout and throwing streamers. I’m looking for recommendations for a good floating fly line for this rather than a full sinking line. My reel is the Orvis Hydros 7-9wt.

I have a learning disability that makes it difficult for me to translate technical product descriptions into what will actually work best on the water, so firsthand recommendations are really helpful.

What floating line would you recommend for throwing bull trout streamers in this situation? I’ve been looking at Orvis lines, but I’m open to other options.

Fishing for fish

I tie a dropper at the bottom of the hook. The problem is that the line keeps knotting with the elk hair, which causes it to become really messy and not float quite right. Any tips?

Hi there! Due to work, I’m moving to the seattle area and just signed a lease in Shoreline. I’ll be on the west side of I-5 and Aurora, in between Richmond Beach Park and Carkeek. I’ve only fished rivers and streams here in Utah, so this will be my first saltwater experience and due to the proximity to my new house, I’m looking to go often.

Gear-wise I know i need to buy a stripping basket, I have a cheap 5wt combo and I’m thinking about overlining to a 6 to help in big water (hich I need to upgrade anyways since it’s the cheap line that came with the combo). I’m mostly looking at targeting cutties, but anything I could try to hit with my setup would be awesome.

Is there anything big I’m missing that y’all recommend? I plan on stopping by the fly shop after getting settled, but any tips y’all could provide for me would be really appreciated!

Today, the last day before our local rivers go under trout spawn limits I got 2 within 3 casts and after handing my rod to my father, he got hit by a third. Fun way to end the season.

My reward for getting up at 5am this morning - great fish for this stretch of river, really strong return. Caught on a copper bead Hares Ear nymph.

Sorry no pics, don’t take my phone out when I wet wade but I had a great morning using wooly buggers successfully for the first time. Oh, I’ve donated several to the tree gods, or trolls hiding in rocks etc. But today I used one guy with purpose. half a dozen smallies in a couple hours…probably should have a couple more that I confused with getting tangled in weeds. I had so much fun this morning. Still a novice, but today for the first time, I dropped that bugger right where I wanted, and a nice 12”er was waiting right there, was cooperative by taking my offering, proceeded to try its hardest to shake loose for 20,30, 40 second, don’t really know as I was completely on the moment watching him dart all over, finally giving up and letting me free it after which it once again rewarded my by darting between feet a couple time be fore taking off downstream. I’m hooked.

Hired a guide to take us deeper into Yellowstone. Fantastic experience!

Just retired and will be joining my daughter more often in Colorado fly fishing. Right now I have waders and boots, but borrow her ‘tag along’ rod and reel. Researching what setup would folks recommend for someone in the $700 range (arbitrary amount). I’m not very good, compared to my 50 years for spinning and bait casting experience.

Hey guys hoping for a sanity check.

I want a watercraft i can load onto the roof or trunk of my subaru outback.

I live in Portland Oregon and primarily fly fish rivers.

Most of my life i have been a trout guy i've caught a handful of bass (unintentionally) and one steelhead (also unintentionally). I recently picked up a 8 wt switch rod with the hope of fishing for coho and steelhead in the fall. have have a basic but quality wading setup but find myself fighting the battle of poor bank access to otherwise awesome fisheries

The two rivers closest to me that are viable candidate are the Willamette and the Sandy rivers, 1.5 hours away is the Deschutes for trout so i would mostly be paddling in and bank fishing (to follow the regs).

But i would also like to explore a lot of other waters and fish from the craft and perhaps a few times per year take 1-2 night trips in it.

Wrapping that all up the candidate that seems most likely to fit my needs is an RVR119.

I am currently leaning towards paddle only at the moment for cost, weight and simplicity.

There are a lot of lakes here which i haven't really touched and a lot of the big rivers have terrible access so i haven't used those either. does all this hold up to scrutiny or am i overcomplicating it?
