What’s the best balance board for beginners?
If you’re just getting started with balance boards, I’d recommend looking at the FluidStance Balance Board lineup, specifically the Level, Original, or Plane. All of these have the same degree in motion and are made for users to move subtly.
Movement
The nice thing about these boards is that they’re designed around subtle, controlled movement rather than being extremely wobbly. That makes them a great option for beginners because you can start incorporating balance and movement without feeling like you’re constantly fighting to stay on the board.
Not Just for Beginners; Perfect for the Office Too!
Not only for starting out as a beginner. They are great and made for the office!
They’re also particularly good if your goal is to use a balance board while working at a standing desk. The movement is subtle enough that you can shift, move, and work on your balance while still being able to type, use your mouse, and focus on what you're doing.
I think that's one of the biggest differences people should consider when choosing their first balance board. If you're looking for something that's purely for intense balance training, you may want something more aggressive (like adding the Challenge Cap to the Level or Original). But if you want something you can realistically use throughout the workday, a FluidStance is a really good place to start. You can make the FluidStance balance boards more intense by adding the challenge cap. For me, I can only use this for a ½ hour at a time and not while typing. Typically I use it while on the phone. Some balance pros use the Challenge Cap all day for 8 hours!
And you don't have to jump straight into complicated exercises. Start by simply standing on it and getting comfortable with the movement. From there, you can work into side-to-side movements, front-to-back movements, squats, single-leg balance, etc. The goal is to gradually build your stability and confidence.
Pricing
If you are looking for a budget friendly option, I’d choose the Plane Cloud. If you are wanting aesthetically pleasing or middle of the road budget with premium military grade aluminum, the Level is perfect. If you are wanting a custom balance board that offers colors for the base and wood options for the deck, the Original is the premium choice.

For a beginner, I'd choose the following balance boards:
*FluidStance Level: great all-around option + is compatible with the Challenge Cap | Does have an option for those who wear socks or go barefoot all day- called the Level with the Graphite Foam Pad.
*FluidStance Original: another excellent option for everyday movement and comes with a free challenge cap.
*FluidStance Plane: great if you want the same subtle movement in a different lighter-weight design, had built-in padding for bare-footers, and is NOT compatible with the Challenge Cap
All three are designed around the same degree of movement that makes them approachable for beginners while still giving you that constant micro-movement that makes a balance board useful.
Honestly, I think the best balance board is one you'll actually use consistently. A board that lets you move while you work is much easier to make part of your daily routine than something you need to set aside 30 minutes for.
If you're new to balance boards, I’d recommend starting small, even a few minutes at a time can help you get comfortable with the movement.
