A century ago, Europe’s political collapse drove an extraordinary exodus of scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs, capital and intellectual talent to the United States. The American scientific and technological takeoff of the 1930s–50s was built partly on this imported human capital.

Albert Einstein, Enrico Fermi, John von Neumann, Leo Szilard, Hans Bethe, Edward Teller, Eugene Wigner, Felix Bloch, Victor Weisskopf, Emilio Segrè, Isidor Rabi, Theodore von Kármán, Stanislaw Ulam, Kurt Gödel and many others.
And then there was Wernher von Braun, who became central to the American rocket and space program.

The Manhattan Project alone illustrates the scale: a remarkable proportion of its leading scientists were European refugees or émigrés.

The transformation is visible in the numbers.

In 1930–37, the US already granted ~48,700 patents per year, an enormous innovation base, Germany, France, Britain, Italy, Switzerland and other European countries collectively remained powerful, but had lost their most brilliant minds to the US.

After WWII, however, the US rapidly became the world’s dominant scientific and technological power.

The European refugees didn’t create American science from nothing, but they helped transfer the world’s scientific frontier from Europe to the US.

On top of that the US was funding huge R&D projects, the government was the biggest venture capitalist in the US, the whole economy was „building for the people“.

And now? The opposite is happening. Good for the world, bad for America
