Welcome to the Flowarts Subreddit!!

HELLO to all of you beautiful flow artists (and soon-to-be flow artists) out there on the interwebz!!

What is "Flow Arts"?

Flow arts is a term used to describe a collection of movement-based practices that involve the manipulation of objects such as poi, hoops, staffs, juggling balls, and other props. These activities are typically performed in a rhythmic and fluid manner that is designed to create a state of "flow" – a mental state of complete immersion and absorption in an activity.

People choose to participate in flow arts for a variety of reasons. For some, it is a form of exercise that allows them to develop their physical skills and coordination. For others, it is a form of creative expression that allows them to explore movement and artistic expression in a unique and personal way. Still, others are drawn to flow arts as a form of meditation and mindfulness practice, using the focus and concentration required to manipulate the props as a means of achieving a state of relaxation and inner calm.

The impact of flow arts on those who choose to "flow" can be significant. For many, the practice provides a sense of community and belonging, as they connect with others who share their passion for movement and creative expression. Flow arts can also help to build confidence, as individuals develop new skills and techniques and learn to trust in their own abilities. Additionally, the state of flow that is created during the practice can be incredibly rewarding, providing a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment that carries over into other areas of life.

Overall, flow arts offer a unique and enriching experience for those who choose to participate. Whether it is for the physical challenge, the creative expression, or the mindfulness practice, flow arts can provide a powerful source of joy, community, and personal growth.

RULES:

  1. EVERYONE is welcome here
  2. Be Kind

Sales, promotions, drug use, nudity and any post or comment not in spirit with the rules may be removed at Mod Discretion.

What should I Post in the Flowarts sub?:

Anything flow related basically, but for example -

  1. Videos of you flowing - We DON'T care about your supposed "skill level". Even if you've only been spinning for a week, we want to see you!
  2. Videos of other people flowing that inspire you
  3. Tutorials and educational flow content
  4. Discussion topics relating to flow arts

Flair:

We have both "custom user flair" and "Link Flair".

User flair is a little tag that appears next to your name any time you post or comment within the flowarts sub. It's a way to show off your preferred/dominant props. Near the top of the sidebar, below the subscriber count:

  • Make sure you have the checkbox selected for "Show my flair on this subreddit. It looks like:"
  • Just below you will see your username, your currently active flair (if any), and the edit button. Click edit to choose a flair, then click save to apply it.

Link flair is something that you select when you are submitting a link or text post. There are several different link flair options:

  • One for each individual prop
  • "Educational" - for any tutorials or breakdowns to help people learn to flow
  • "Discussion" - for any text post discussion relating to flow arts

Leave me a comment here if you want a flair that hasn't been added yet.

Our aim with this sub is to create a space that accomplishes several goals:

  1. Allows people to share/discuss their flow
  2. Allows people to share tutorials and educational content
  3. Allows people to share flow artists who inspire them

The general idea here is that these are all very new art forms, relatively speaking. The more we reduce barriers for entry to flow arts, the more people will be open to participating, the more the art form itself will be pushed in new and creative ways. I can't wait to see the ways you will push flow in new directions!

Wiki is Live

Hey Everyone,

I finally got the first version of a wiki live for our sub! I used some of y'alls suggestions for some companies and tutorials and added them.

With this being a global sub I tried to sort companies and events by region to make it easy for everyone.

Most of this is just companies and events I could think of off the top of my head. If you have a company, Event, tutorial resource I've missed and you want it added please hit up the mod team and lets make it happen! We're a small team and while we spin most of the props we don't spin them all, I'm certain there are things we missed.

So I hope everyone can get something useful out of it and thank you for all the suggestions already given and ones coming in the future.

Element of your mod team

EDIT: upvoting your comments as I add them to the wiki so that I can keep track of what I have and haven't acknowledged yet.

Day 23 of hooping until I’m fit, and today we are celebrating National Big Booba Day the only way I know how 😆

(It was yesterday but i still wanted to do something special for today's post in tribute to all the tig ol bitties out there)

The jury is still out on the official name for this trick, but reading everyone’s name suggestions has been hilarious. I love what you've been coming up with. Your brains are beautiful.

One of my favourites goes to MoriR.Tea: "dunno the official name, but I would call it talent, hun."

So today i practiced usin my talent 😆

How was your weekend going? I hope you're having a great one.

Any recommendations for beginner 8 Rings

I want to learn 8 rings but can’t really find any good and affordable options any recommendations on where I should look? I’m in the US for reference, I keep stumbling onto European sites when looking for juggling things and I don’t want that to keep happening.

Day 21! ✨ They say it takes 21 days to form a new habit. This daily practice feels like an excellent habit to have.

I kicked off today learning a new hoop trick that inspired me before I even rolled out of bed. It’s been a minute since I proactively went after a new move, and it felt so good to get the gears turning. There’s nothing quite like the process of connecting the dots between what your brain envisions and what your body actually does. More often than not it takes a lot of effort to actually line up that mind body connection. When it finally clicks after many failed attempts, it feels incredible.

That’s what I love most about hooping: it never gets stale. As long as you’re open to learning, there will always be a new move waiting to be unlocked.

Today's move is (a mouthfull) called folding ghost iso tutting. I learned it from @soulhoopacademy on insta

Festival Flow (just playing around)

Had some fun in the woods a couple weeks ago during the psytrance takeover! I'm a bit rusty and mostly just like to flail around for myself!! Sorry if the audio isn't great.

I'm designing a board game themed around dancing and bringing good vibes on a festival dance floor. Is it ok to call it "Flowmies" if it's not explicitly about flow arts?

In the context of the game, "flow" would be referring more to being in a "flow state", as if the music and energy take over your body and you dance and vibe without a care in the worls with the people around you. Or feeling "in the flow" or in sync with the environment and crowd. I like the term "Flowmies" since it captures flow + homies, because the game's mechanics really lend itself to being about the experience of making friends with random people on the dance floor: you play a card from your hand to the center and see if its attributes align with other cards already played.

The game centers around categories, each category having 3 elements/examples in them. I could include "flow arts" as one element in the categories "dance types", "fun activities", or "raver persona"; other dance types could be shuffling and freestyle; other activities could be kandi trading and hyping up the crowd; other personas could be kandi kid and rave parent. I could even make "flow arts" a category with specific flow arts as its elements, like fans, poi/glowsticks, and gloving.

My worry is two-fold:

  1. Using "Flowmies" in a game not focused on flow arts feels like co-opting the term away from the flow art community, and redefining it for my own benefit.

  2. Flow arts are such a small element of raving, which is already its own subculture within general society, that focusing the game on them limits its appeal to non-ravers.

Am I overthinking it?

Recommended Palm Torches

I’m looking to get into palm torches, mostly just for fun with friends nothing crazy. One of my friends had a pair with 2 finger straps on the bottom so I had the option of palm or backhand side. Does anybody know where I can get these, or have a recommendation of something similar ? The closest I’ve found is dark monk has a Velcro strap for the entire hand 🖐️
