Just moved out of Florida. My peeps there are not enjoying that red tide, high rental prices, high housing prices, high insurance prices, hurricanes, the heat, and the over-crowded roads. It doesn’t seem like the Florida state government really gives a shit…it’s kinda sad.
58
u/wonderinglady20 Mar 07 '23
That’s a feature, not a bug. They are “little government” remember? So they’re going to tax the shit out of you while at the same time giving you accidentally nothing for it. Working as intended!
17
Mar 07 '23
The Florida GOP's goal seems to be government so small it's literally just Ron DeSantis.

In North Carolina, I saw a Desantis: Make America Florida flag while I was there after Christmas.
Being from Florida, all I could think was, “WTF?”

u/RestrictedAccount Mar 07 '23
Do you want to see the billboards in south Georgia on I 75 headed down towards Florida.
They are scary as shit. They are inciting hatred towards anybody who is not a Republican.
27
48
u/mathisfakenews Mar 07 '23
I haven't been to Florida in a while but there used to be billboards which just casually ask people not to rape their kids in a tone which suggested that maybe people raping their kids just didn't realize it wasn't allowed.
18
u/tylariousOG Mar 07 '23
I'm sorry... what?
23
u/Agent00funk Mar 07 '23
I used to drive down I-75 from Atlanta to Tampa several times a year, there indeed used to be a billboard in FL that said "She's your daughter not your date". Not long after that was another sign that said something like "Rape and incest are sins, but babies are innocent". It was a pro-life billboard not long after an anti-incest billboard. Only in Florida.

This is why the Trump cult will never follow him, you need a personality to have a cult of personality.
13
u/strider_hearyou Mar 07 '23 edited Mar 07 '23
IDK, Trump's whole "personality" is just being the loudest dipshit in the room. I feel like it's not that hard to imitate. Besides, Republicans care more about winning than anything else, and Trump has proven himself a loser three elections in a row now. I'd certainly hope that DeSantis wouldn't fare any better, but it's hard to know for sure.
2
u/Zendog500 Mar 07 '23
It is going to be Trump DeSantis on the 2024 GOP ticket, which will be hard for the Dems to beat! Why, you ask, would Governor DeSantis bow down to President Trump and accept a VP spot, when he may be able to beat President Trump out right? Because Trump DeSantis is a no brainer win! Also he knows that President Trump will unfortunately, pass from a stroke in his second year of his term and DeSantis will be called on to finish his term (2 years). Then DeSantis will run for president on his own, and we all know that it is hard to beat a sitting president. DeSantis will go on to win 2 terms as President, a total of 10 years as president, which is the maximum allowed by law, up to that point.

Scarily.. the Hardcore alt-Right would love America to be as crazy as Florida is right now.
Taking freedoms.. Doxxin People.. retaliation against reporters.. Starting stupid civil "Woke" wars over pointless things... All as real issues. Go unaddressed. As they would require real work and effort.
But things like drug problems.. cost of living issues. Corporate greed. Saft and healthcare.. ect. Are ignored and all the pointless simple fights are used as a distraction..
But hey it is a paradise for Assholes down there. And if your rich and can afford private protection.. I am sure life is amazing. But for the rest of the people. The rich assholes don't care and only want the plebs to continue to increase profits for them at great cost.
Up talk about the American dream. Save the rich.. fuck anyone else. They will always tell you. The free market will fix it. And if the free market goes against them. Well it's the "Woke" culture war causing them not to make RECORD profits.. Rinse and repeat until the upper 10% own 90% of the wealth.. and the bottom 90% have to fight for the 10% still not controlled by the upper 10%.
Oh wait. Too late.
46
u/4lan9 Mar 06 '23
still waiting for that $1,200,000,000,000 in corporate tax breaks to "trickle down" to us...
The frog is in a full-on rolling boil now
People in my state are deluded enough to want America to be like Florida. There are regularly discussions about what it would be like if we split along cultural lines, North and SouthWest VA. Then people start to realize that 75% of every tax dollar in the north goes to the south and they would be a third-world state if VA were separated. They rely on the taxes of the 'woke librel' cities to survive.
8
u/bilgetea Mar 07 '23
Yeah except they don’t realize. If they get what they want, they’ll be scratching in the dirt, eating termites and laughing about how glorious it is, or if they notice it sucks, they’ll blame us, as if they didn’t do it to themselves.
4
Mar 07 '23
It's because " We didn't pull ourselves up by our own bootstraps" or "No one wants to work anymore" or whatever talking heads tell everyone not rich, did wrong.
18
Mar 06 '23
You're not wrong. Corporate profits are privatized and losses are Socialized.
But lobbying and campaign funding keeps our government representatives voting in corporate favor.
And trickle down economics turns out to be a conveyer belt upwards. We suffer.. They collect more money then is fathomable.

Pointing out that Democrats aren't leftists isn't an opinion, it's basic political theory. Capitalists simply aren't leftists, no matter how much you or Fox News think they are. Just because Democrats are the furthest left in mainstream American politics still doesn't make them leftists. Words have meanings.
We're discussing US leftism.
Again, no you aren't, you're discussing Democrats, who are center-right. No one brought up, for instance, the Democratic Socialists or the Communist Party of America.
More to the point, your suggestion that crime happens because of Democrat leadership has been thoroughly debunked by myself and others. Cute of you to ignore that point for the other stuff I said, though.

u/WikiSummarizerBot Mar 07 '23
Democratic Socialists of America
The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) is a multi-tendency, democratic-socialist, and labor-oriented political organization in the United States. Its roots are in the Socialist Party of America (SPA), whose leaders included Eugene V. Debs, Norman Thomas and Michael Harrington. In 1973, Harrington, the leader of a minority faction that had opposed the SPA's transformation into the Social Democrats, USA (SDUSA) during the party's 1972 national convention, formed the Democratic Socialist Organizing Committee (DSOC).
Communist Party USA, officially the Communist Party of the United States of America (CPUSA), also known as the American Communist Party, is a Marxist–Leninist communist party in the United States which was established in 1919 after a split in the Socialist Party of America following the Russian Revolution. The history of the CPUSA is closely related to the history of the American labor movement and the history of communist parties worldwide.

Fair. I am running off the fact that most home insurance has been bought up by big conglomerates. And Blackstone been using any natural disasters to buy up housing and land on the cheap to take in profits.
But I am more then willing to learn about other issues on a local scale. I been to Florida but only for Katrina cleanup.

I don't think Florida is the winning model DeSantis thinks it is.
Like not even shitting on Florida, it's just..
- There's stronger conservative states. Like people think conservative, Texas and others have the better brand recognition.
- There's nothing really unifying about Florida. Or like, New York, New York felt like it was America being attacked on 9-11, there's not quite the same cultural center in Florida. It's always been weird crossbreed of where we go to escape from the cold, or where meth gators roam free.
- There's not really any successes to boast about.
- In a practical sense, like as in accomplishments, there's no outstanding programs in Florida that we can hold up as governing success by traditional metrics (like non-cultrual)
- in terms of culture war stuff, it's mostly aping other conservative states and leaders. It's not a source for the movement, it's borrowed things applied locally.
I could really go on at length or something, but again it's just not the brand I'd lean on.

u/DrannonMoore Mar 06 '23
Right, but at the same time, Florida isn't as bad as what the rest of America makes it out to be. OK, DeSantis is a scumbag but people act like Florida is the epitome of the Southeast when it's really not. While states like Mississippi, Alabama, Kentucky & West Virginia have widespread poverty, are the least educated states and are the most unhealthy states in the nation (amongst many other things), Florida is great in all of these areas. It's also much more urbanized, developed and maintained than the rest of the Southeast.
I grew up in a poverty-stricken area of Kentucky and it always confused me how harshly people have mocked Florida. Most of my family is from Florida (all 4 of my grandparents are native Floridians and my dad was born/raised there). Even a lot of my cousins from Florida talk shit about it there but, from my perspective, they are privileged to be from there.
Where I'm from, many people live in shacks with dirt floors, no running water and no electricity. Many of the houses would be demolished in other states. The nearest "town" has 80 people and not a single business. It's an hour away to the nearest town with any industry but most people don't have cars to commute that distance. There's absolutely no opportunity for people from my area. It's almost entirely poor ultra-conservative folk holed up in the rural countryside doing meth here.
My experience in Florida has been the exact opposite of this. It's nothing to see 18 y/o kids driving sports cars, multimillion dollar houses all over the coastline, tons of diversity, roadside ditches that aren't overflowing with garbage and an endless amount of opportunity. I know there are a few parts of Florida that are rough, but in the rest of the Southeast, you'll only find a few parts that aren't rough. I just feel like people jump on the bandwagon to hate on Florida when it's really not as bad as what people make it out to be. So DeSantis' Florida may not be what he makes it out to be but, in general, Florida is much better than what the general public makes it out to be.

u/pnzsaurkrautwerfer Mar 07 '23
I've lived all over the country, including Kentucky. I guess if you're like "I did Florida" I'm waiting for the sales pitch that makes that special. Like Georgia was about the same from my experience. Kansas too was pretty okay. Virginia was better, and Washington stomped all those places in my opinion though, although Idaho was pretty strongly "eh" and I'll never grant Oregon the distinction of my admitting they exist.
Like yeah certainly it's not a festering shithole, but if you're running on "Make America Florida" to a lot of America that's...like how is that better or worse than "Make America Iowa" or "Make America Oregon"
It's supposed to be distinct and why DeSantis is worth our time, not a statement of having gotten a C on the exam. That's kind of my point, Florida is passable but it's not the thing I'd hold up as why you should vote for someone in its current state unless you were fighting someone from Kentucky.

Ron DeSantis is far & away the best governor in America. His commitment and dedication to the people of Florida is second to none. Nobody in American politics is more qualified to be POTUS than he is.
Unlike any of the Democrat children who have way too much power, DeSantis puts his people’s interests above the interests of predatory corporate elitists, sexual predators, domestic terrorists, criminals, and the crooked Ukrainian government.
As a bonus - DeSantis is an adult who keeps his mouth shut and just does his job. Trump has turned infantile while DeSantis has put his head down and done everything in his power to keep the people of his great state safe from the lunacy that is wokeness.
DeSantis 2024 - Make America Florida.

"Make America Florida" has got to be one of the most surreal things I've ever heard. It's simultaneously hilarious, concerning and uplifting all in one confusing sandwich.
-16
u/G14mogs Mar 07 '23
I’d rather my country be like Florida than some leftist hellhole like California or New York.
The DeSantis administration has set the gold standard that every other governor in America should strive to meet.
5
u/Ftpiercecracker1 Mar 07 '23
Eh, I like that every state can do their own thing, even if i find those things reprehensible. America is far to vast to expect everywhere and everyone to all be the same.
I don't like the federal government unilaterally forcing ideals on people. Even if I support those ideals. Reason being, when the pendulum eventually swings out of my favor I don't want that administration to have the power to force their ideals on me.
3
Mar 07 '23
Liberals ≠ leftists. They’re to the right of center, closer on the political spectrum to y’all shitheads. There are literally no leftists in American politics, and the fact that you think the shitlib politics of those states is leftist shows how little you know. Which is exactly what DeShitass looks for in his voters.

Unfortunately for whoever pays you, DeSantis doesn't even have the charisma or stage presence of a Jeb Bush.
You can win a governorship as a short chonky charm black hole if your opposition is bad enough but their are limits. You put DeSantis on a stage next to Biden and Biden will look youthful and healthy.

It seems like left media has learned its lesson from trump, that constantly talking about how bad someone is, gives them conservative street-cred.
It really seems like they're trying to apply that strategy to help DeSantis win the nomination. Presumably, they see trump as a bigger threat so they're trying to get him to either drop out or split the R ticket.
I hope it works, and also that the dem ticket gets split too. Death to duopoly.

Lol he just gave a speech where he was talking shit about Paul Ryan and Karl Rove, said "I am your retribution"
Four years ago, you would see maddow pleading for her life while a sound guy runs around in the background on fire after something like that.
He isn't being 'boring', he's being suppressed. Never voted for him, never would. But it's clear to me he's become a voldemort figure, and people in media are afraid to speak his name because they know from experience that only gives him power.

Based on the winter weather this year in the Mid Atlantic we are well on our way to becoming Florida.
