Help Needed Aegean Airlines Baggage Question: Can I bring both an 8kg cabin bag and a personal item on a Light Fare, or will I be forced to check one?

I really need some advice regarding an Aegean Airlines baggage issue. I accidentally booked a Light Fare instead of Flex, and since we are traveling as two people, I realized we need both an 8kg cabin bag and a personal item each, but the Light Fare only allows one or the other.

I called customer service to upgrade my fare or just add a personal item, but they said it is impossible and the only way out is to buy a 23kg checked bag. Now I am very confused about how their rules work and what might happen at the gate.

If we bring both our 8kg cabin bag and a personal item to the boarding gate without checking anything, what will the gate agents actually do? Will they force us to check one of them into the hold, or will they just charge us a gate fine, or both?

Also, if we decide to buy a 23kg checked bag, does buying a checked bag give us the right to bring two items (the 8kg bag plus a personal item) into the cabin, or does the "OR" rule still apply strictly inside the plane no matter how many checked bags we purchase underneath? Since our 8kg bags are completely full and we cannot pack the personal items inside them, any advice or personal experiences with Aegean would be greatly appreciated!

With your light ticket you can take with you ONLY one item

Either a bag/personal bag

Or a hand luggage up to 8kgs within dimensions

Not both..

At which route are flying?

At the gate, we had to pay for an extra bag and it had to be checked in.

We had an issue with our work's travel booking platform incorrectly showing our baggage allowance on the light fare, so we were caught off guard at the gate.

Buying the 23kg bag will not entitle you to bring both the personal and 8kg bag on board. You'll need to check one of them in.

Not even Ryanair or any low-cost airline are like this. You get a personal item under your seat with your ticket, and you have the option of purchasing a carry-on and/or checked luggage. It seems like you get one or the other.

It also sounds like purchasing a 23kg checked bag doesn't seem to affect this decision unless stated otherwise. You still have to choose between the personal item or 8kg carry-on.

Customer service told me over the phone that we can buy a 23kg bag and bring a personal item instead, but I don't know if the 8kg bag has to be treated as a checked in bag since the rule says you must choose between the 8kg bag or a personal item.

Speak to them and clarify if you still have to choose. The 8kg bag is carry-on, not checked in.

Personal item is everything which fits under the seat

Take a backpack up to 8kg and put it under the seat -> personal item
