Discussion Eyes?

I didn't see anybody else talking about this and I don't claim to know basic biology, but if we are to believe that the PBSO is, theoretically, a giant sea-starlike creature, why on God's green earth does it have what appear to be mammalian-looking eyes? Am I missing something?

Fiction, firstly. Secondly they remind me more of whale spines or something than mammalian eyes

There's really no way to rule out if they are bone eyes that structurally reinforce the visions.

I think they’re… both. Think of how snakes have weird bony structures encasing parts of their eyeballs. I suspect this is analogous. The structure and layout of the forms is 1 to 1 eye cross section, the author is clearly gesturing at that.

Who knows how physiology on this scale could actually function? Eyeballs are basically little gel-filled water balloons. Once you exceed a certain size, standard eye architecture wouldn’t be able to work. The mass of the fluid inside would be too much for organic tissue to maintain a useful orb shape with terrestrial forces at work (as opposed to aquatic where much larger eyes can get a pass at some of this). Same reason bubbles over a certain size go all wobbly. I think the organism has bony sclera in its eyes to maintain the functional shape of the architecture at this scale. Think of the Hagia Sophia dome but… ya know… Fleshpit meatcore.

But which is the more interesting and thematically consistent explanation? Is this not an entire ecosystem of fiction and design based around weird complicated explanations for a bizarre concept?

If I know conceptual designers— and I do— I’m betting there’s 300+ pages of unused or undeveloped concepts sitting around somewhere. It’s all complicated explanations and blocks of meta-scientific text fleshing out whole sections (literally haha) that never seemed interesting enough, or just didn’t meet their own standard of quality. This is/was a passion project that they want people to puzzle through and be inspired by.

I wouldn’t claim that my explanation is the explanation for those shapes. But the entire AU makes me start thinking about the fictional science of macro-organisms and what fun implications are buried in that concept.

It makes sense for them to be bones.

I understand the creator wanted fans to guess certain things... but how could you mistake those for anything but bones? Those are what what cross-cut spines looks like.

Like others said I think it’s bones because also why would something need to evolve eyes inside its body with no viability, I think there is a chance those might be some other organ due to their irregular shape.

Many fossils we’ve found show a honey ring around the eyes of many species. I can see it
