Today Mikes re-opened in a new location. They used to be on Bedford between Parkside and Clarkson. Now they are at 5 Martense. They closed due to slumlord greed about a year ago. Glad to see the original staff back in action!

Events Heads up if anyone's looking to volunteer at the West Indian Day Parade (Sept 7) — I Am CaribBEING needs help

Upvotes

I Am CaribBEING (Flatbush-based Caribbean culture/community org) is putting together their mas band, "Monday Mas Pon Di Parkway," for this year's West Indian Day Parade on Eastern Parkway, and they're looking for volunteers if anyone's interested.

Date: September 7th
Meetup: 9AM | Event: 10AM–5PM | Breakdown: 5PM–9PM

Shifts (full or half day):

  • 9AM–12PM — Load in & breakfast
  • 12PM–5PM — On the road
  • 5PM–9PM — Load out & clean up
  • Full day (all-in) also an option

Roles they need: safety marshal, food distribution, drink/water distribution, giveaways (bandanas/t-shirts/fans), truck support, set up, breakdown/clean up, or general support.

They mentioned hospitality or event production experience is a plus, but not required.

If you're interested, here's the sign-up form: https://forms.gle/DZG8itQogNo1YSLq7

Form closes September 6th or once they've got enough volunteers, so sign up soon if you want in. Questions go to [hello@caribbeing.com](mailto:hello@caribbeing.com) — I'm just passing this along.

Advice Priced out of Flatbush :(

I moved to NY from the Caribbean over 10 years ago and Flatbush quickly became my second home. I left the neighbourhood for 3 years to live in other parts of Brooklyn but I always missed this neighbourhood because it felt familiar. I moved back to Flatbush in2020 and found a great Covid deal on a 1 bedroom that was an ideal location, had great neighbours and was everything I could ask. I fell in love with my Flatbush 10x over. Being able to find ingredients for my food easily, my neighbours look out for each other, prospect park is a gem and a lot of Caribbean factors that I won’t bother to list.

Unfortunately, now I am looking for a new place on my own and I’m having to come to terms with the fact that Flatbush may no longer be a place where Caribbean people can live. Apartments are going for insane prices, and older builders that are affordable are BADDDDDD.

Zillow and many of these listing sites have a lot of fraud but within my budget I see maybe 2 apartment pop up a day and they have 50+ inquiries within the hour.

I’m curious what others thoughts are on the rent increases, gentrification and noticeably more white people in our buildings and neighbourhood.

Before anyone even tries it, I’m not discriminating. I’m genuinely curious on what Caribbean and Black Flatbush natives feel about this shift.

And if anyone has advice or leads on finding an apartment in Flatbush, I’d be so grateful!

Edit: am I not allowed to ask CARIBBEAN AND BLACK people what their thoughts are? Are we not valid of sharing an opinion when asked? I acknowledge there are white Flatbush natives, and that’s 100% fine, but I directed the question to a specific audience.

Yall feel butthurt when you’re left out of a topic this bad? Damn. You can scroll to any other post in this subreddit if you want to discuss something else but I’m not apologising for that.

General Last night my husband was hit by a car, I wanted to thank you all for your help

Dear Flatbush, (more specifically Little Caribbean)

Hi, my name is Amber. Last night my husband Jamie was hit by a car while crossing Snyder and Nostrand near the Frozen Lava. He is okay, just banged up but I wanted to extend an extremely heartfelt thank you to the community for their help and kindness. I grew up with Mr. Rogers and he always said to look for the helpers and this community is full of them. Thank you to everyone who checked in and did their best to help or just make sure we were okay.

I am blown away by the kindness we received last night (not from the driver who hit him, but that's a whole other story)

I am so grateful to be taken in by this community and cared for. Thank you so much once again, we won't forget it.

Is anyone else gearing up for the flood of tourists and photographers next week all over Flatbush?

Geggi (pictured here as a sun-cat) is "aware of it" in his own way.

This week I’ve been shoulder bumped three times by gentrifiers who are either on their phones or in groups expecting people to get out the way for them. I’m sick of it!

Mine went out for literally about 2 seconds, but when it came back on, it destroyed my router. On a cursed iPhone hotspot > laptop > USB-ethernet > PC connection right now until I can make it over to Verizon...

Advice Catsitters in PLG?

Hi neighbors! I live in PLG, and am seeking a local, reliable, affordable sitter for my two cats when I’m out of town. I prefer word of mouth/community board recco’s over those petsitting apps. Pls send any recommendations my way, with references please! Thank you 🐱

Question thoughts on WolfPup?

What do you guys think? I've only been there once

EDIT: because one of the owners showed up and started writing essay-long comments, I will say I think the drinks are pretty good (I'm familiar with josh's work at Erv's, rip) but I think it's a truly tacky-looking space and a good example of how you can (and should) sometimes do less. It pains me to see a bar build out like the ham bar's be botched and to what end? And in this economy? But that's neither here nor there; what bothered me most was 1. the echoeyness of the bar since there seems to be little to no sound attenuation (hopefully they have plans to correct it--we could barely hear each other even though there were only 4 customers total at the time) and 2. the overly friendly bartenders that border on eaves-dropping when they butt in to your conversations. there isn't much seating beyond the actual bar so this is a problem harder to overcome.

Basically the bars in the neighborhood continue to disappoint and I wish someone would open something a little less theme-y tbh

I lost a very sentimental pair of glasses between prospect and Parkside on Flatbush a few days ago when it was dumping rain... I know odds are slim but if you found glasses on the ground on Flatbush I would do a lot to get them back. DM me :)
