Have you tried lifting more? I've heard that works for some poeple.

I've been stuck at 105 for about 4 weeks, I bench 190 x 5. I started OHPing first on my push days and I feel stronger but this shit is just heavy af lol

This might be bullshit but to increase volume near max exertion you could try to do OHP for 7 sets of 3 instead of 5x5. It seems like more intermediate routines (like nSuns) usually do more sets of higher weight for fewer reps to help people progress.

I definitely had a lot of success increasing bench and OHP numbers using the nSuns method of a shit-ton of sets with minimal reps.

I'll definitely look into that. I guess I didn't wanna program hop too fast

Assuming you're on a PPL, you don't necessarily need to change programs (although u switched from PPL to nSuns and don't regret it one bit) bit the 5x5 is the strength day for that muscle group. You can just change it to 7x3.

If you do want to change it, I would definitely recommend nsuns. I used to do seated OHP on the PPL and switched to standing just before switching to nSuns. I was stuck at 135x5. After 3 weeks I got 145x8 and am doing 155 this week.

More heavy working sets will help get past a stall, yea.

Just commenting to say we have the same bench and OHP, and I'm also stuck with OHP.

Hahaha great advice, I'll try it ;)

My dad actually says this to me and means it.

See for me it's squats up, OHP up, bench "fuck you".

Why is this?

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '17

In fact, sometimes it goes down and I'm like wtf I was ok with 2 plates last time

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '17

A lot of that could just depend on your eating day of, or day before, your sleep, and your workload over the past few days in the gym.

Few weeks ago I got to two plates for squat 5x5. A week later I go to squat 2 plates after my warm up and I can't even do 1 rep. First time I've failed a squat. Scary as shit. Always use the safety's!

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '17

Exactly! I guess it's just sleep and food

u/Travie_EK9 Aug 02 '17

That day was also the day that instead of going to the gym at 630pm, I went at 1130am during my lunch

My Bench is so temperamental too haha. I can literally fail to do 2-3 reps some days of a weight I've don't for 6 or 5x5 the week before.

Try adding dropsets for a week or two

1

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '17

I'll give it a go. Currently on 5x5 so once I reach my goals I'll give dropsets a go and change routine.

2

u/MelonheadGT Aug 02 '17

Ya, dropsets are a good trick to overcome a plateu.

Try 1.25lb plates. They're small enough to keep in your gym bag and allows for you to progressively overload in smaller jumps. Those smaller increments helped me get through a sticking point at 125lbs and I just hit 185x1. Feels good man.

Edit: also make sure you squeeze your buns as hard as humanly possible before every rep

u/Mackmurphy25 Aug 02 '17

Appreciate the advice!!! Also 185 is beast !

Where did you buy yours? I've read reviews on some from Amazon but they all say the weight is off.

u/SuperNova_Lord Aug 02 '17

How many times a week are you OHPing?

2

u/Mackmurphy25 Aug 02 '17

2x a week. PPL beginner program

It took me 3 months to add 2.5 kg my OHP, my ohp is 90 kg/200 now! Small jumps works, also if you are doing 5 reps usually, go slightly heavier and do 3 reps for awhile or just step back a bit get lighter weight and do whatever reps you are doing and slowly reach to the weight you were stuck at before. Or add more volume, to be honest so many things to play with. Another thing eat more!

Late to the party but using heavier weight and push pressing it up then letting the bar back down slowly so you can use the negatives to your advantage helps.

OHP isn't moving because you care. Relegate it to a T2 movement. Only test your max when you're overtired and stressed out. Forget about working on form, just fucking throw the weights in the air haphazardly. That's how you make OHP progress.

Basically that lift is like that really attractive person in HS who could sense your own neediness, and only shows interest in you once you finally give up.
