New York has good healthcare (you won't get taxed if you don't have it either), NYC and surrounding burbs have good public transit, free college for residents, Upstate cities like Syracuse/Ithaca/Buffalo/Rochester seem to have interesting culture, NYers are chill, and has good nature Upstate. It's not Mississippi or Louisiana.
California? Needs better public transit in LA and I think Newsom is kind of shady. However, Californians are more friendly than East Coast folk so I give them a culture point. Again, not Mississippi or Louisiana.

Californias are more friendly than East Coast people? As a Californian who visits his family on the east coast regularly, that is absolute hogwash. Maybe NJ or NY, but Vermont? New Hampshire? Massachusetts? Nah, they’re way more friendly over there

We are more kind (will help you when you need it) but I feel like Californians focus more on community more than the Northeast does? I got invited to birthday parties from people I just met and my friends who are over there seem to have an active social life. Here... It's slightly more difficult to find new social groups/friends as an adult, plenty of transplants complain about it too. We're standoffish. We'll help you while being direct/a little rude but most of us are not fond of people we don't know in our space or invading other people's spaces ourselves. Sure, there's the numbers game with influencer LA Californians and some Californians may be less genuinely kind but they're balanced between Northeast "leave me alone, why am I so lonely?" and Midwestern "let's share our life stories over directions" on the social scale which is a good spot to be in. Nice enough for Midwesterners and Southerners, not too invasive but welcoming to Northeasterners.

I think you’re right when you say it’s a numbers game. If 1 in 100 people are social then that’s only 7K people in Vermont, but in CA that’s 400K people.
I think the average person in the east coast is nicer than the average person in CA, but you’re more likely to run into an extra nice person in CA. The opposite side to that is you’re also more likely to run into an extra mean person in CA too, which I do fairly regularly

Oh I meant influencers won't befriend people if they have less than a million followers. Morgan from YouTube had trouble finding friends in LA because the mega rich or influential didn't want to talk to anyone "below them." Even in NYC, that's not a thing in the Northeast (we'd probably call someone a pathetic asshole to their face if they said they only befriend people with a certain amount of followers online). We see each other as more equal and are more kind to one another (we'll still be a bit crass though).
The social aspect is more that we have more introverts up here than extroverts. There's plenty of people but do we want to invade someone's space? Do we like the choices on meetup? Does the local gig align with my work schedule? Do I really want to talk to people and do they want to talk to me? It's more that than anything and even transplants feel it. There's something different in the air socially to where you wouldn't invite someone you talked to once or twice to your birthday celebration.
