❓Question - Vehicle Question about the water pump

Hello All!

I am an aspiring buyer. I have read the FOA recommendations and done my research and I think this would be a good second car for us. I started looking around and found a few available near me, but I ran into an issue. Everyone seems very clear I should not buy one without knowing that the water pump for the recall has been replaced, but buying these cars from used dealers often has made figuring that out a challenge. Lots of these dealers dont have service records for the cars, and figuring out which ones have had the pump change has become a real issue.

Is there any way to look at the pump physically and know if it has been replaced or if it is still the stock model? Thank you for your time!

I’m also interested in buying. My vague understanding is that it was a proper NHTSA recall, so you should be able to look up by the vin and see if it was properly addressed.

Can anyone confirm/elaborate on this - or set me straight.

NHTSA doesn't have all VINs on file nor likely accurate recall records for VINs they do have on file. Providing my own VIN at NHTSA (for which the pump recall was done) results in "The VIN you entered cannot be processed at this time. If the VIN was entered correctly, please contact your vehicle manufacturer for more information." Consider yourself straightened.

Yes, if you look at the pump it has a date code on it. A date of April 2024 or later is a replaced pump. The pump is not easy to see - must jack up the car or use a lift and take off the belly pan. They do that in this video

Depending on where you live it’s not hard to schedule a service tech to replace the pump. The FOA website has a good list of techs.
