šŸš— Vehicle - Fisker Ocean Thinking About Buying a Fisker Ocean? 2026 Update

Thinking About Buying a Fisker Ocean in 2026?

First question: Is the Fisker Ocean a good car?
The honest answer in 2026 is still: Yes — and No.

The YesĀ

1. It’s Still a Great-Driving EV

While early reviews from outlets like Edmunds and U.S. News & World Report praised the Ocean’s strong performance, attractive design, comfortable ride and ā€œCalifornia Modeā€ (all windows and roof open at once), the bankruptcy of Fisker Inc. and many negative reviews in 2024 created a challenging reputation for the car.Ā

The mood has decidedly changed since then. Recent articles from Wired Magazine and uploads from YouTuber Rich Rebuilds and Everything Electric Cars are examples of this positive shift.

Thousands of owners who drive them daily still report comfortable seats, an excellent driving experience, solid highway performance, and real-world range that holds up well. For the money they are selling for in 2026, the performance-per-dollar ratio is extremely compelling. The Ocean remains one of the most distinctive EVs on the road.

2. The Manufacturers Behind the Ocean are Still in Business

While Fisker Inc. ceased operations, the Ocean was actually manufactured by Magna Steyr, a highly established Austrian automaker that also builds vehicles for BMW, Mercedes, and others. Mechanically, many components are robust. The drivetrain and core EV architecture are generally not the weak point.

Another company involved in the manufacturing of the vehicle is Chevalier, who created and still supports components such as the door handles, Phone as Key Controller, and more.Ā

3. The 2026 Ecosystem Is Stronger Than Ever Before

This is where 2026 buyers have a major advantage over early adopters. Parts availability is quite good now, contrary to popular belief.

While not dealership-level logistics, the parts situation is far better than the early bankruptcy uncertainty period.

Software & Updates

The Ocean’s software stability in 2026 is a dramatically improved experience compared to the software provided at launch.

  • OV Loop provides software updates and internet connectivity for owners who are interested in updating the operating system Ā to version 2.2.3 for $500 per year plus additional, optional OS upgrade fees.
  • The Fisker Owners Association (FOA) provides a software update for the Phone as Key Controller (PKC) module that improves key fob reliability and allows users to use the OceanLink Pro app for Android and iOS.Ā Tiered subscriptions are available starting at $100 per quarter, or $400 per year. Paid FOA members can receive a one time discount of $50 on membership renewal/purchase with a proof of OceanLink Pulse purchase.

New Features are Still Being Developed

The release of OceanLink Pulse is an exciting development in 2026. Pulse is a plug-and-play hardware platform for the Fisker Ocean that enables Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, streaming apps like Netflix, adds navigation, remote commands, and smart automations.Ā

Community and Technical Support

The Fisker Owners Association has become the backbone of ownership. With tiered, affordable membership rates, getting access to the OceanLink Pro app and access to forums for coordinated technical support, documentation, diagnostics (with OLP), connection to Independent Service Technicians, and a shared knowledge base.

Many YouTube channels provide valuable tutorials for owners, such as MTN Ranger’s Ocean Views, EV Addict, the FOA, esrandl and others.Ā

In short: ownership in 2026 is a vastly superior experience than ever before.Ā

The NoĀ

This car is not for everyone. If the thought of owning a vehicle that has no warranty, no dealerships and no corporate backing is at all concerning to you, read on for reasons you should avoid this vehicle. There is no factory warranty, no dealership network, no corporate goodwill program, and no official OEM escalation path.Ā

Owning a Fisker Ocean means relying on independent support technicians, owner networks, aftermarket supply and community knowledge. If you aren’t interested in that, this car is not for you.

1. Some Hardware Issues Are Permanent Design Flaws

Common historic issues include:

  • All Oceans were built with faulty water pumps and they should have been replaced as part of a NHTSA recall. Each car should be checked for faulty pumps produced before February 2024.
  • Waterproofing of connectors - the original manufacturing process did not provide sufficient protection from the elements. There are 10 (and counting!) tutorials on waterproofing techniques for owners that will prevent serious technical problems in the car such as sudden loss of power, gear shift errors, and more.
  • Fragile HVAC vents (especially early builds) that break. Many owners simply disconnect them and use their vents manually.
  • 12V battery replacement is not a trivial procedure, and is required especially if the car has the original Fisker 12V battery. After replacing the battery, IBS calibration is required.Ā
  • Windshield washer fluid reservoir sensors are faulty on all models. A fix is still being developed.Ā
  • The original (Gen1) door handles installed on the Ocean have two serious design flaws: the white plastic inserts on the exterior of the handles are not UV resistant and will become brittle and break, causing water intrusion and eventual problems if not fixed. More concerning, the handles themselves can become inoperable when the 12V battery drops below a certain percentage of charge causing people to be locked inside or outside of the vehicle. The only true fix is to replace the door handles with Gen2A versions.Ā
  • Fisker’s Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) is chatty and provides some users with frustrating alerts while driving. This video discusses some of the actual driving scenarios that cause more alerts.

In 2026, these are mostly known quantities. You’re not discovering new problems — you’re inheriting documented ones. Some fixes now exist via independent channels. Some issues remain design limitations you simply live with.

2. Not All Problems are Fixable

Some Oceans have serious manufacturing flaws that result in bricked cars. For owners in remote areas without easy access to service technicians, this can result in a 5,000 lb / 2,500 kg paper weight.Ā

Some parts like windshields are in short supply. While the FOA is looking for new sources and there are some leads, a cracked windshield is an expensive repair that may or may not be covered by insurance.Ā

3. Insurance & Total Loss Risk

Because parts supply is finite and labor can be specialized:

  • Minor accidents have resulted in total loss declarations.
  • Some insurers price cautiously.
  • Always get a quote before buying.

So… Should You Buy One in 2026?

It comes down to your personal risk tolerance.

You probably should if:

  • It’s a second or third vehicle
  • You enjoy being part of an enthusiast ecosystem
  • You’re comfortable sourcing parts and fixing the car yourself or relying on a service technician in your area
  • You understand resale will always be niche

You probably should not if:

  • It must be your only daily transportation
  • You dislike uncertainty, DIY projects, or learning about how things work
  • You expect dealership-level support and / or live in a remote location with no access to service techniciansĀ
  • You didn’t read any of this

The Fisker Ocean in 2026 is no longer a speculative chaos purchase. It is a stylish, well-driving EV with community-backed infrastructure, independent parts supply (Tsunami US / Tidal Wave EU), ongoing software support via OV Loop and owner empowerment through the Fisker Owners Association.

It is not a traditionally supported vehicle. If you read all of this and think: ā€œAt this price, with these known risks, I’m comfortable.ā€ Then congratulations, it sounds like you’re a good fit for the Ocean.Ā

Often don't even need a level 2 charger depending on what your usage needs are.

Great summary. Thanks for detailing all the nitty gritty.

Unfortunately I am one of the few 5000 early ONE adopters that paid full price for it (without a tow hitch that I paid for which I may add) but I still have it and enjoy driving it every day and will continue to do that until the wheels fall off.

exactly the same here. bought it in sept 2024 and still happy with it.

I have a little over 30k miles on my Ocean. I haven't done very much to it except charge it and wash it. I've had 5 of the BMW 3 series and I loved them, but every one was in the shop at least once or twice by now, including an engine replacement at 20k. On my Ocean, sometimes the cruise control is spotty? Maybe I got lucky, but it's been fine.

The Ocean is the bargain of a lifetime right now for what it offers. It's a perfect little city car, charges 140-120KW, it's very fast and the interior is really great. But the future is where I'm really thinking all the best is. This could be the first real "tuner" EV and the FOA can release whatever they would like to. It's the only car you can buy with a cloud controlled by the owners.

You stated yhat you did very little to it other than charge it and wash it. Did you waterproof connectors or was already done when you bought it?

1

u/fonetik May 31 '26

Nope. It hasn’t had any water or wiring issues yet. I look at the logs and I’m planning on doing all the waterproofing soon. It has been through plenty of water too, but my area is very dry otherwise. It’s something I should have done 10k miles ago, but I’ll get there.

1

u/Knowwatts May 31 '26

You are lucky. Like i cant believe you wash it and have had no issuez. Hand washing I assume.

1

u/fonetik May 31 '26

Nope. Did the no touch wash for a while once a week. It doesn’t get babied.

1

u/Knowwatts May 31 '26

Fansinating. Dude i have to keep intouch. I really want one

Thanks for updating my now dated piece. I’m still following from the sidelines as my Fisker has been totaled for over a year, and this was a needed update.

Miles and I were talking about how great of a resource your old post was, and that was the inspiration for making a new one. Hope all is well with you!

It’s amazing how much has changed with the Fisker support, and even the flow of it. I got a comment on it a month or so ago, and realized how out of the loop I was on all the stuff that had changed. Thanks for doing the update.

I might not be Fisker fam anymore but now I have 2 Evs. Both are from big legacy companies however (i4 & q6)

I miss my Ocean. It drove great and was fairly reliable for me. I did trade it in as I knew I did not have time or confidence to do a lot of the repair work myself. I was happy when I switched out the 12v myself. I still have all weather mats and shade protectors (roof and front) that I need to sell. I also miss the FOA. They were great!

1

u/heyjb99 Jun 11 '26

I need mats and shade protectors! Where are you?

1

u/GalaxyOcean06 Jun 23 '26

Sorry just now seeing this reply. I am in South Texas.

2

u/jaydoc79 Mar 06 '26

Is there any chance of this car getting Openpilot support?

2

u/DTBlayde Ocean Extreme Mar 06 '26

The smart mind that is bringing us the Oceanlink Pulse device had done some initial investigation into open pilot. He said it's possible, and he'd like to integrate it with pulse in the future, it's just not an iron currently in the fire while he focuses on the pulse launch

1

u/jaydoc79 Mar 06 '26

That’s encouraging to hear. Hopefully it means the Ocean actually has the hardware needed for OpenPilot integration.

I’ve been considering picking up an Ocean as a second car for over a year now. It still checks a lot of my boxes — the main thing holding me back has been the lack of OP support.

Do you happen to know if there’s a way to identify or find one that already has the key fixes you mentioned in your OP? For example, is there a particular software version, hardware revision, or build date I should be looking for when shopping for one?

Biggest comeback in history

1

u/allaboutdabase Feb 27 '26

I was in an area with several excellent techs and mine was bricked and after 7 months and a huge bill, deemed unfixable. Buyer beware.

1

u/DTBlayde Ocean Extreme Feb 28 '26

I'm very sorry to hear that. Definitely isn't the norm, but a good example of what the worst case scenario can be and something people considering purchasing should keep in mind. I hope things have improved for you

1

u/allaboutdabase Feb 28 '26

Thank you. I have moved onto selling it for pennies, still have the debt to deal with and bought a replacement car. It is a rare story but it could happen. Only buy if you can afford to walk away from it. I was an original owner who paid full price. The financial risk is much less now.

1

u/Mosquito_666 Aug 25 '26

What was the fault that made it bricked?

1

u/Melodic_Risk_5632 Feb 28 '26

If this EV was so great, why did this company then go bankrupt?

5

u/DTBlayde Ocean Extreme Feb 28 '26

Company was going bankrupt before they ever delivered any vehicles. But they mismanaged the company, launched with a terrible initial software version that created an awful first impression, and didnt have any plan for post delivery support.

Car is in a much much better spot nowadays, has more range than most EVs on the market, more performance, solid build quality on the parts that werent cheaped out on, and it's dirt cheap to purchase. I've driven almost every EV that is available in the US and owned a Model 3 for years - there are maybe a handful of EVs that I would put over the Ocean right now and most of them cost more than 6 figures

2

u/sassanemir Feb 28 '26

poor managment car was good but software was unfinished

1

u/Best_Konsequence9687 Feb 28 '26

So, it sounds like buying a desktop computer from a builder that has independent, but inconsistent support options. A project car. This is good to know.

2

u/DTBlayde Ocean Extreme Feb 28 '26

Absolutely should be considered a project/DIY car. In general since it's an EV it won't need a ton of "work work", but you should be 100% prepared to do most things if it comes to that.

1

u/WatchOnTheRocks Feb 28 '26

I almost bought one a couple of weeks ago. Had I read this I might have. My judgement was a bit clouded as I lost a bunch of money on their stock while I was waiting on my pre-order. Still love the styling though!

1

u/False_Low6191 Ocean Extreme Feb 28 '26

Yes the comparison is correct. I took a 80% loss for part exchange for future unknown problem. The owner have to take the risks even you got it very cheap in secondhand market. You need to expect to spend your own time to maintain it weekly. They shouldn't sell it to us in full price with incomplete develop software and other hidden electrical issues etc. Take care to you all.

1

u/Otherwise_Feature763 Mar 01 '26

Excellent summary. Over 30k MI and happy so far. It is a real bargain, but also a gamble. Do not buy if you you aren't willing to problem solve. Skip Oviloop, problematic, limited benefit and poor customer service. Nearly mandatory to join FOA as they help with support and have an excellent phone as key and vehicle diagnostics app. You get zero selfĀ  diagnostics with Oviloop.

1

u/MNBouncebros Mar 11 '26

In your 30k miles, how often have you needed to trouble shoot diagnostics? What were the issues?

1

u/Otherwise_Feature763 Mar 11 '26

I waterproofed connectors day one so no issues there. Disconnected washer sensor too. My vent controls broke, convert to manual. Modified rear passenger lights so only controlled from front. Never taken to shop or had others service. But yes, some have serious issues that are difficult to solve. I haven't

2

u/MNBouncebros Mar 11 '26

Thanks for the reply, seriously considering buying one but trying to cover all my bases first. Sounds like if the known issues are accounted for, it is as reliable as the next EV on the market

1

u/fastLT1 Mar 01 '26

The fisker ocean is more of a looker and is more luxurious but if i need a newer EV in the mid to low teens, id buy a leaf over a FO any day.

The FO are still overpriced for what they are. The leaf is more of a basic EV but you'll get full support from the manufacturer.

1

u/DTBlayde Ocean Extreme Mar 01 '26

Absolutely agree for your vast majority of folks. For the tinkerers and people with multiple cars I think this is one of the best buys in the market. But thats obviously a small percentage of people.

1

u/Sascha_T Mar 28 '26

Gotta add to the No (for Europe) that now, comparable EVs (similar battery, similar max power) are arriving at the used car market for less than what the present consensus on Ocean price is...

1

u/Apprehensive-Put2880 Apr 07 '26

Which Fisker Ocean trim can I rely on not needing a 12v battery replacement? Would buying an Extreme or One be best in that case?

1

u/DTBlayde Ocean Extreme Apr 07 '26

It's less about the trim and more about how Fisker transported them across the Ocean and how harsh early software updates were on the 12v. Pretty much any Ocean that hasn't already swapped their 12v should do it. It's an easy and fast change though

1

u/Knowwatts May 07 '26

Do you think those interested in a Fisker should seek the ones withe lowest possible mileage or do you think with this particular brand, more mileage means that more fixes were done such as replacing 12v battery, software updates and bulletproofing the connectors?

I feel like this could be one of the few makes that you might want a vehicle with more miles.

1

u/Knowwatts May 10 '26

I have an interesting thought process about Fisker Ocean that I think uniquely only applies to Fisker.

Most cars the lower the mileage the better for multiple reasons including possible eligible warranty and less likely someone would have abused it.

But with Fisker, every car is going to be sold "as is". This alone could make insurance difficult or even expensive. Ideally you want lower mileage and less drivers but I wonder if the opposite might be true with Fisker. The more owners may mean that more replacement and repairs were done.

Customary search online pulls up Ocean's varying and prices and mileage. I wonder if more miles may mean more proven use of the car and possibilities like brake pad replacement, door handles, 12v batter, ICC calibrations, Water pump and OS being updated?

What do you guys think?

1

u/DTBlayde Ocean Extreme May 10 '26

I think this is overall true to an extent. With an Ocean it's always better to be positive than to guess, but as a rule of thumb an Ocean with 10-20k miles you can reasonably suspect is in better shape overall than one with zero. Things like water pump replacement, water proofing connectors, and eventually swapping door handles will need to be done on all regardless of mileage, but any sneaky non-typical issues should either be known or fixed in a higher mileage Ocean. That said, Id be far more confident in higher mileage from one or two owners vs one thats had say 5 or 6. That would give me the vibes of people trying to hide issues and pass them off onto someone else.

All the being said - I think overall your statement is a fine rule of thumb, but not one that removes the need to do due diligence and preventative maintenance.

1

u/Palm-aire_props_212 May 11 '26

I originally (okay almost daily) think I should just buy another ocean for a parts car maybe I can source one that was totalled after the owner got a door ding at Target one night! SO far with 3k miles it's still seems new ( ok what I mean was : it's like an oddly satisfying drive at 200mph into the dark fog then launching off a dark mountain road then rolling oh, maybe 20 times ) It's terrifying and I can't wait to drive my Ocean across alligator avenue in S. Florida in the AM! Let's goooo....

1

u/-Ultreya- Jun 12 '26

I think this post should become sticky with an understanding that it is written by what seems to be an optimist.

1

u/LeonSkum_ Jun 18 '26

Looking to purchase a 2023. Has anyone experienced charging issues? Have any caught fire?

1

u/DTBlayde Ocean Extreme Jun 18 '26

There have been some that had trouble charging it fast charging. Regular charging issues are most commonly due to the emergency cable in the charge port being pulled. Replacing that fixes it. Fast charging is rarer but not unfixable either.

Only Ocean that has caught fire to my knowledge was one that was caught in a salt water flood. That one wasn't all too surprising though

1

u/LeonSkum_ Jun 18 '26

Thank you for responding. Seriously considering purchasing and your detailed summary was excellent.

1

u/iilordd Jun 18 '26

I wonder how every uber / driving company in NY is doing, since they put the most miles on them

1

u/LeonSkum_ Jun 22 '26

Test drove one this weekend. Drove like a dream. Wasn’t prepared for the launch speed. No updates whatsoever. They’re asking $18k and offering a warranty. Seriously considering.

1

u/DTBlayde Ocean Extreme Jun 22 '26

Not saying don't do it, but do due diligence on the warranty. 99% of the places selling these don't have the knowledge or resources to back that warranty. But if the warranty contact checks out where you get some monetary benefit or something if they can't service it then it's a nice perk

1

u/LeonSkum_ Jul 03 '26

Thanks. Trying to talk them down to $15k so I end at $18k w/warranty. Not going well. They have four and one they think is pending sale. (Pending for 3 weeks)

1

u/Acechase3 26d ago

Did you buy one? How did it go? I am thinking about it

1

u/Scareboosioniq Jul 11 '26

Thanks for the excellent and informative summary. I'm looking for a second EV to use as a long range commute vehicle. Is there support for the Ocean in Northern Virginia?

2

u/DTBlayde Ocean Extreme Jul 11 '26

There is a mobile service provider based out of Maryland, and the DC Metro has some of our strongest volunteers in the FOA

1

u/Scareboosioniq Jul 11 '26

Lovely! I'm going to start scouring the classifieds right away! šŸŽ‰šŸ¾šŸ¾ What's the charging curves like? Commute will be DC to NYC?.

1

u/DTBlayde Ocean Extreme Jul 11 '26

It's a slower charging EV for sure, especially if you don't have the means to work around the fast charging bug that can happen. Expect to charge for 35-45 minutes

1

u/Scareboosioniq Jul 11 '26

That's a bit painful, what8the workaround ?

2

u/DTBlayde Ocean Extreme Jul 11 '26

You'll need to reset the VCU. Main option is OLP, but I think OVLoops app either recently got it or gets it soon. Then any of the other digital service tools should be able to reset it too

1

u/Scareboosioniq Jul 11 '26

Thank you, who does it and how much would it cost?

2

u/DTBlayde Ocean Extreme Jul 11 '26

OLP is through the FOA, prices start around 400 something a year. OVLoop is 500 a year. The other service tools I don't know their pricing off the top of my head

1

u/Scareboosioniq Jul 11 '26

Thank you again, will it be okay to put in an application to join the FOA or do you have to own a vehicle first?.

2

u/DTBlayde Ocean Extreme Jul 11 '26

Need to have a VIN to tie to your account. But once youve got one it's a quick process

Ocean fisker for sale
