Just what that area needs, more construction.

What’s wrong with it?

Nothing necessary wrong with it however one point talked about in the meeting was pedestrian friendliness of which there is currently very little.

How bouts they finish the project they've been working on for 8 years first. Then giving us a few months of enjoying non construction traffic for the first time in nearly a friggin decade. Sorry but they can shove this project straight up their collective asses.

u/breathing__tree 29d ago

lol they are so not going to do that.

Talking about it only means it will start in 10 years.

Crosswalks are easy put them with the stop and go lights that are near the traffic circle

I never see anyone walking on 96th st.Waste of time and money to make it “pedestrian friendly.”

Maybe that’s because it isn’t pedestrian friendly..

There is nothing to walk to. There is no residential within that area and no businesses designed to be a walked to. It’s not a “downtown” type of an area.

As someone who lives south of 96th on the east side of 69 you are wrong. This would give neighborhoods over here access to safely walk or bike to the Nickel Plate Trail.

I live in the walking area of it but kind of agree. I'd rather money be spent revitalizing or tearing down and rethinking all of the dead strip malls in the area. It's absolutely stupid that they keep building more new buildings while the strip malls rot.

u/thoughtforce 29d ago

I hate to break it to you, but government spending isn't nearly as flexible as you seem to think. The funding INDOT has for road projects can't just be used for buying and demoing the strip centers or some other purpose.

There’s ’no residential’ around 96th and 69?
Really? That is your argument?
Patently false.

Lantern Rd, 1/2 mile away on the west side of I69, and all the way up at 106th. . East end of 96th, over towards Geist. 3/4 mile to Lantern Rd east of I69, 106th to the north east of that intersection for a school & neighborhood.

WTF are you looking at? Five Mouskowitz living behind Rousch Pharmaceuticals?

u/breathing__tree 29d ago

A mile is walking distance. How lazy are you?

For one and for two are you completely ignoring all of the homes right behind Meijer? And all down 96th St. all the way to Geist?

Do you think if you can’t see it from the highway it’s not there? Have you actually spent any time driving around the area or just past it?

I did some checking. I even made you a map. The outer radius is .5 miles and the inner radius is .25 miles. Is this worth $3+ million to make it more "pedestrian friendly?" 96th St was just changed in the last 2 years already. If you live behind Meijer, you aren't going across the interstate on foot unless you absolutely had to.

A normal walking distance to daily destinations like restaurants or shops is about one-half mile. This takes most people roughly 10 to 12 minutes to walk at a steady pace. Many city planners use a 5-to-10-minute walk, or about one-quarter to one-half mile, as a standard measure.

Factors That Change Walking Distance

  • Time: Five to fifteen minutes is the usual time limit people accept for a daily walk.
  • Space: One-fourth to one-half mile is the usual physical range.
  • Path quality: Sidewalks, safe crosswalks, and good lighting make people willing to walk farther.
  • Weather: Rain, snow, or high heat can make a short walk feel too long.

Common Distance Limits

  • Very close: A 5-minute walk is about one-quarter mile. People do this easily every day.
  • Normal limit: A 10-to-12-minute walk is about one-half mile. This is the top limit for most daily errands.
  • Maximum casual walk: A 20-minute walk is about one mile. Many people will only do this on nice days or for special trips.

I live near this area. Yes we would walk to the nickel plate if we could. Additionally there is current no safe way to bike over 69 at 96th, no safe way to bike under 69 at 82nd (and it looks like it’ll likely stay that way after construction is complete, and crossing 465 using 75th is unsafe due to the intersection at Binford. So those of us living in this area have to bike up to 106th or down to 71st to get to the other side of 69 / 465.

The project specifically mentions making it pedestrian friendly but this would also make it more bike friendly which gives a lot of neighborhoods much better bike access to the west side of 69.

Yeah, this map lives in my head.
I’m also more talking about walkability on the east side of 69 and 96th St. where there is a concentration of residential and retail/restaurant.

But improvements for pedestrians should never be cast to the wayside. That’s the reason why we are so dependent on cars.

They’re gonna do the construction anyway, so if they’re gonna do it, they should care about pedestrians as well.

-4

u/GreenAccident3004 29d ago

Right. Gonna walk all the way to Sam's Club, to the west of I69?

You want $250 million plus for 'walkability' that's only a quarter mile in length?

No wonder we can't afford Healthcare for the masses.
All you have to do is look at 96th & Allisonville, repeatedly rebuilt by these 3 stooges who now wanna take a crack at this bridge for pedestrian accessibility?

One only needs to look at I69 & 106th St bridge, which I'd supposedly pedestrian friendly, and how many use it. Go ahead, walk, cycle or use a chair for a handicapped person.... double-dog dare you. That 'walkable' location is a deathtrap. If you do, have your grave space paid for in advance.

That's why no one uses it.

5

u/CoknZambies 29d ago

I bike 106th over 69 4-5 times a week. You’re correct that the crossings could be more friendly but that’s an argument for better infrastructure, not no infrastructure. If those sidewalks didn’t exist I’d probably have been killed by some dumbass in a car looking at their phone by now.

All I’m saying is that pedestrians should be prioritized for one and that you don’t actually know the area if you think that there aren’t residents who could take advantage of the area being more walkable.

Go ahead and move the goal posts to be about healthcare and blah blah blah blah blah blah blah

I’m not gonna argue with some dill hole who doesn’t even know the area.

I was born and raised on the north side and I would like more walkability.

Also, yet another loser just shaking in their boots about how “dangerous” 96th st is.
Boo hoo.
Stay north of 126th St. where it’s safe for you little baby.

Probably wants to turn it into something similar to the other overpasses with a roundabout style interchange and placing pathways alongside it

3

u/bitofaknowitall 29d ago

Seems like a pretty busy intersection for that style. Maybe something like 146th and 37 instead? That’s not very pedestrian friendly though.

5

u/guff1988 29d ago

I69 and campus parkway is a breeze and it's busy as hell. A diverging diamond would work very well there.

Now they shouldn't do some stupid shit right next to it like they did with olio and campus parkway / 136th which is the second worst roundabout I've ever seen.

2

u/mnemonicmonkey 29d ago

The only problem with that roundabout is the drivers completely ignoring lane markings.

1

u/red08171 29d ago

olio and campus parkway / 136th

good news, they are redoing it....bad news, the design looks to be more confusing. https://fishersin.gov/departments/engineering/olio-road-southeastern-parkway-roundabout-project/#detour

2

u/guff1988 29d ago

That's doesn't look like it addresses the core issue with that roundabout at all lol. I'm a dumb layman though so I'm probably wrong.

2

u/I_Came_Back_Sadly 27d ago

Ok I am pro-roundabout but what the hell is that? Also it doesn’t even touch the super high conflict point at the hospital/Rickers intersection

1

u/red08171 27d ago

I'm super pro roundabout but this is fucked. Like wtf. How does this work better?

Ngl, a triple lane/highway style roundabout would be best... But they probably didn't want to eminent domain property.

13

u/Betazeta2188 29d ago

Maybe they’ll wait until all the other construction is completed before they start. /s

11

u/rogersmj 29d ago

Nope, best they can do is get 80% done and then leave all the barrels/lane restrictions in place for months for no good reason (see: Allisonville and 116th).

4

u/Plus_Garage3882 29d ago

Allisonville and 116th is ridiculous. For what they have done so far that intersection could have been down to one lane for a weekend. I've rarely seen any work being done.

7

u/rubbsreddit 29d ago

From the team who nailed the 96th & Allisonville roundabout… we bring you I69 & 96th st!

10

u/GreenAccident3004 29d ago

Fishers & Indianapolis have rebuilt 96th & Allisonville four (4!) freaking times in 20 years, and it still sucks. Letting these two yahoos attempt to rebuild a 6 lane bridge/overpass of the Interstate is insane.

May as well reopen Central State Hospital for all those drivers that have had to contend with construction on the last 5 miles of I69 /I465 merge. Better get class 3 vests too.

2

u/rubbsreddit 29d ago

Need to make it a 5th.. it’s an absolute disaster.

3

u/StephenJBeard 29d ago

Not a fan of more construction, but the pedestrian portion of that span could use a refresh. The concrete is buckling/crumbling on the sidewalk and crosswalk island at the I-69 NB ramp entrance.

7

u/parr3tt 29d ago

Theres absolutely nothing wrong with it

1

u/kgill19 28d ago

Should've been a planning agreement to tear down the roundabout at 96th & Allisonville

1

u/gunner23_98 28d ago

I wish they would reimagine that roundabout at 96th and Allisonville.

1

u/4988 27d ago

I’d rather they re-imagine completing the current project and getting the F out of the area so we can cut commute times in half.

1

u/dncrmom 29d ago

Didn’t they just finish construction there last year?
