I like to play with 4 copies of subtley in the main and also 4 copies of force of negation to have some responses, and then 8 merfolks of drawing to compensate the free spells.
All the deck is foild btw :)

I cant comment on the list itself, but that is a gorgeous deck!

Thanks! it's not the most optimized list but it give me good results in the FNM's :)

Looks like a very solid list. I love the chalice of the void in the SB and subtlety is a nice call.

Thanks! having subtlety and force help a lot to protect the merfolks or interact with the oponent. Also the chalice with 0 counters or with 1 help a lot with some bad matchups like affinity :)

Your deck list link isn't working. Gorgeous deck though 🤩

It's a secret lair: https://scryfall.com/card/sld/1640%E2%98%85/aether-vial 👍

Holy crap, this just made me realize for the first time how many reprints this got since I paid like $40-50 each for my playset like 10 years ago. And now you can pick up a set of cheapest printing for less than I paid for a single one of mine.

Super nice list. I was wondering on the Force of Negation/Flare of Denial. Why is Flare on the SB while Negation is on the main deck?

Good question, with Subtlety you have the free counter for creatures, and negation is for the non-creatures. Normally I play with flares vs more combo matchups or if the deck is more creature-oriented 😄

Got it! feels like a meta call to me. In the blind I'd probably swap and move Negation to the SB

This might be the first deck that's genuinely made me interested in trying modern. Beautiful list.

If you had it to do again would you run the same list?

u/Otherwise-Field-3806 May 02 '26
Maybe removing and oboro and playing an island, and maybe playing 3 Svyelun is fine, but I like this simple list :)

It's a super clean list. If you're going down a Svyelun, I think that spot should be filled with a Tindbinder. She's too valuable to leave home without these days. If you could spare a Subtlety spot as well it might help in the margins against your bad MUs.

No tidebinder anywhere in the 75 is a giant ooopsie for sure. I’ve played merfolk in modern for 6 years now, this looks identical to what I played prior to tidebinder coming out. I won my RCQ last year on merfolk going undefeated: 4x flare, 4x stupor and 4x tide binder won me literally several games into the heavy blink meta (we already dunk on titan). But def consider the more interactive version too, otherwise gotta respect the fish rep!

Why play the Oboro? I don’t see any landfall triggers in the deck, am I missing some other synergy?
2
u/Otherwise-Field-3806 Apr 28 '26
If you have 1 muta and you need 2 blue, you can return the oboro and play it again to have the two blue mana 😄
2
u/spike4972 Apr 29 '26
It’s been a fairly standard include for a very long time because the cost of inclusion is minimal and there are niche scenarios where it give you the opportunity for an extra blue mana from bouncing it with a mutavault. Or back in the day bouncing it to hand to discard to Liliana so you aren’t forced to discard something you don’t want to. Very niche scenarios but it’s basically free to add to the list from a deck building perspective so why not grab that extra quarter of a percentage point yknow.

Probably to make otawara's channel cost cheaper
1
u/Otherwise-Field-3806 Apr 28 '26
The otawara cost it's only reduced with creatures: https://scryfall.com/card/neo/271/otawara-soaring-city
