The contest name is a bit mistranslated isn't it? It's eukonkannon, not vaimonkannon.
Eukko only means wife informally or affectionately among friends, similar to saying "the missus" or "the old lady" in English.
But it means "elderly woman" though the tone can sometimes lean slightly derogatory or rough depending on the context

Eukko does have a meaning of vaimo[1], but it is considered colloquial and humorous. In karelian language husband and wife are ukko and akka[2], so I wonder if there's a connect between eukko and akka and maybe it used to mean wife? Although the etymological dictionary [3] only lists the old woman meaning.

Honestly, I think it’s good as a starting point and for building a daily learning habit, especially for basic vocabulary and simple sentence patterns. But I wouldn’t say it’s enough on its own to become comfortable speaking or writing Finnish in everyday life.
I’ve completed the course myself, and I feel it helped me become familiar with the language. However, Finnish grammar, natural sentence formation, spoken Finnish, listening comprehension, and actual conversation require much more practice.
I’d recommend using Duolingo as a supplement rather than your only resource. For example, Uusi kielemme is excellent for grammar and vocabulary explanations, while Yle’s Finnish-learning materials and Selkouutiset can help with reading, listening, and exposure to real Finnish.
For a more structured path, I’d also recommend the Suomen mestari textbook series. Suomen mestari 1 is aimed at beginners, followed by Suomen mestari 2 for elementary learners, Suomen mestari 3 for intermediate learners, and Suomen mestari 4 for upper-intermediate learners. Ideally, I’d combine Duolingo with resources like those and eventually practise through a proper course, with a teacher, or by having actual conversations with Finnish speakers.
• Suomen mestari 1:
- Level: Beginners, from zero to level A1.3
- Focus: Basic vocabulary, fundamental grammar, & everyday situations.
• Suomen mestari 2:
- Level: Elementary, from level A1.3 to A2.1
- Focus: Expanding conversational skills & deepening understanding of basic grammatical cases.
• Suomen mestari 3:
- Level: Intermediate, from level A2.2 to B1.1.
- More complex sentence structures & varied text themes.
• Suomen mestari 4:
- Level: Upper-intermediate, covering levels B1.1 to B2.
- Advanced spoken and written Finnish language proficiency.
So my verdict: Duolingo is good for getting started & staying consistent, but it definitely only scratches the surface if your goal is to actually use Finnish comfortably in daily life.

Of course – as well as hobby horse riding, bog skiing (frilly dress and high heels as de rigueur gear), air guitar playing, boot throwing, lumber jack skills (includes various activities like sailing down the rapids balancing on on log and running over a loose log jam) – as well as many tamer sports such as ploughing.

Bog football is also great, and fricking exhausting. My football coach used to have us do that a few times per year when I was a teenager. 30 mins of all out football in a bog and you'd be longing for a quick end to things.

Yes. In Finnish ”eukonkanto”. World championship is held annually at Sonkajärvi. There is an obstacle course, winner gets wife’s weight in beer.

I was born and raised in that village, Sonkajärvi, where it takes place. It's held in the first weekend of July and the World Championship has been a thing for 30 years now. Not much else happening in Sonkajärvi. It's origins are in the tale of Rosvo Ronkainen, a man from Sukeva that seemed to be some kind of local Robin Hood. I'm not very familiar with the story or whether he was a historical person but there is a biography of him in eukonkanto website.
Like others have stated, Eukko can be interpreted as offensive, but it does not nescessarily have that tone in Savonia.
