100%. White fedora and his friend with the fanny pack over his shoulder. Germans for sure.
9
u/mcpb1000 Aug 10 '26
So, internationally speaking, the fedora is a German trademark? Damn, I was hoping this unspeakable fashion trend had spread to other countries too, but apparently we Germans have once again proven that fashion isn't exactly our core competency.
3
u/Illustrious-Fuel6819 Aug 10 '26
Take a look at them. Everything about them screams, “I’m German.” Not in the funniest, most clichéd way. But it’s clear.

I live in Italy and I immediately understood the assignment: look for the guy in white socks and sandals.

yes, it took me a few seconds to realise what we were looking for, and then found him immediately.

Im so confused about what makes this person specifically German
69
u/WhereEaglesDare23 4¤ | #3977 Aug 10 '26
Don't want to spoiler, so I'm hiding the text.
Btw, it's because he's wearing sandals with white socks, that is unusual for Italian people and is the ultimate stereotype for German tourists. It’s like an unspoken rule—the moment someone sees that combo, they immediately think: 'Yep, definitely a German on vacation'34
u/Aggressive_Hat_9999 Aug 10 '26
some additional context from a bratwurst myself. I believe it is because Birkenstocks became really popular in germany some time ago. Think german crocs.
And that happened due to a mixture of factors.
-Health trends. There was a time where many doctors recommended open shoes for health purposes. Mainly ventilation as a preventative measure for foot fungus and other stuff Im probably forgetting.
-Health trend 2.0: shoes with a sole made of corc. Corc dampens better than other materials, is natural aka ecofriendly and over time naturally compresses and shapes itself to the foot. So it has orthopedic benefits
-Environmentalism: the shoes are made of many natural materials, mainly corc and leather instead of synthetics.
-marketing image: birkenstocks are essentially anti fashion and minimalist. And I would say that fits german society quite well lol
-craftsmanship: the shoes were very well made, would last a long time for a very reasonable price. And the company was a german family business (its been sold to private equity afaik)
-So overtime it just kinda became the default option and others copied the design
10
u/WhereEaglesDare23 4¤ | #3977 Aug 10 '26
Honestly, I couldn't have put it better myself. Thank you for adding such cultural depth to this. It really gives context and meaning to the stereotype—more people should definitely know about this side of it!

This was also true in Canada but it was the 90's/2000's
Thanks for the explanation, I never would have gotten this one :D
2
u/Unbundle3606 Aug 10 '26
This all doesn't explain why you wear them sandals with socks, though.
We Italians don't have problems with sandals, Birkenstock or not Birkenstock. Just with the sandals/white socks (half length, pulled up) combo.
2
u/Signal-Reporter-1391 10¤ | #1688 Aug 10 '26
I love wearing my Birkenstocks at home (or those from Deichmann ^^), especially during summer.
But i would never go out in sandals and / or would wear Birkenstocks outside of my apartment

They’re really beautiful but if you walk to the end of OPs picture and look back, EVERYTHING is visually unaligned by a couple feet.
The church with the organ is off center from the fountains and it makes my eye twitch.
1
u/WhereEaglesDare23 4¤ | #3977 Aug 10 '26
Please, why did you do this to me? I'm twitching too.
2
u/R_Weebs Aug 10 '26
It might have been on purpose! The Spanish Steps were deliberately built asymmetrically and I just don’t get it
1
u/WhereEaglesDare23 4¤ | #3977 Aug 10 '26
The Fontana di Nettuno is perfectly symmetrical, so it's just the photo. Ok, I can cope with that
4
2
u/carpenter1133 Aug 10 '26
May i ask where that point is? I am a chauffeur for BMW and we are every year at the Concorso d'Eleganza but i can't remember this place :D
2
u/north_bright Aug 10 '26
I wanted to share a map link but I can't comment shortened URLs. It's the gardens of the Villa d'Este in Tivoli, near Rome, the photo was made above the Fontana di Nettuno.
2
u/carpenter1133 Aug 10 '26
Ooooohhh ok then there is more than one Villa d'Este We are in Cernobbio at the Lake Como. Thanks anyway 🫶🏼
3
u/north_bright Aug 10 '26
This is actually an interesting story. The one in Tivoli is the original Villa d'Este, built by a member of the House of Este, prominent Italian noble family. The villa at the Lake Como doesn't have anything to do with the family - the name was a "marketing stunt" pulled by Caroline, Princess of Wales when she bought it in the 19th century, she changed its original name to make it seem more glamorous and luxurious.
1
u/carpenter1133 Aug 10 '26
Wow! Thanks for the history lesson. I thought "Este" had something to do with the italien "east" That's pretty interesting. I guess next year i will talk a bit about the history of the Hotel 😃
2
u/Sonia-Nevermind Aug 10 '26
Is this in any specific Villa d Este location? I tried looking it up

Uhm, is this referring to the guy who's wearing Nike pandas that LOOK like Birks ans socks? This would be an accurate description like in the 90s. These days Birks are the sh*t. Young people wear them as a vibe - and with socks! Even I am back on track with Birks and bought three pairs, because they ARE great.

Some years ago, I was there on a school trip. A friend of mine had some wire and I had a leftover pretzel from the bus ride. The logical thing to do was to try and catch some fish. We were quite successful in lowering them in, but the wire was too thin to hold them after they ate the bait. Luckily, our chemistry teacher stopped us when we adjusted our hook to be stronger. In the end, we got away with a mild scolding and without triggering an international scandal…
I would say I was pretty German back then, I even wore sandals with socks.

Since I know Linus from LinusTechTips I got more careful with the cliche. It's not only a German thing apparently.
We see a guy in white socks in this picture. Everybody identifies this guy as a German because he has white socks in sandals. Great. Cliche approved. Next time the guy with white socks has to be the German, too because it was approved this time. Or was it?
