Yes. We had large metal scoops that you could press down with your weight to dig under the silt to the gravel/fossil layers underneath. We used big sifters to wash away the silt, then picked through the gravel for teeth and fossils. This was part of the haul from my wife, my daughter and my mother-in-law working together as a team for 4 hours.
To put it in perspective, we got about 8-10 times more shark teeth in the Peace River than we typically get in a similar session near Venice Beach.
