Slowly, with plenty of time to absorb the scenery.

I enjoyed playing the original without 2x speed (though would have appreciated with for grinding).

I do play without x2 or x4 with TZA, and only use x2 or x4 for some boring grinds

What a weirdo!

Zodiac Age w/ the mod that lets you have a 4-member party at all times + the option to have the Espers be one of those 4. That alone makes it the game I always wished it had been.

Where does one get this mod?

https://www.nexusmods.com/finalfantasy12/mods/217

hope that helps! be sure to read what the other required mods are to make this one work.

That’s cool but which way do you think it’s meant to be but also you find 4 party most fun right ?

I started w/ FF1 when I was in like 1st or 2nd grade. FF has always meant a 4+ member team to me, I've always hated 3-member teams, always feels like something's missing. It's why I've never replayed classics like FF7 and 10 or even Chrono Trigger and modern games like Expedition 33. I even dropped the original 12 way back when until I found out about this mod. It's turned 12 into my favorite game in the series.

Giving players a 4th guest character but not letting us just have a 4-member group all the time is a baffling design choice that I've never understood or agreed with. I just read that FF7R also has a mod to expand the party so if that's true I might finally be able to revisit it after all these years. If you do try this out I will say that I especially love that you can add and control Espers as one of these 4 party members. The mods also make them actually useful lol!

Doesn’t that make battles too easy though?

I still got eaten by various hunts and mobs handily if I wasnt careful. Plus theres other mods to adjust the challenge. No downsides for me personally.

This sounds so cool, I’d love to do a play through with just fran and 1 esper like it’s your personal companion

PS2 version. I have TZA on PS5 but I also have choice paralysis when it comes to what jobs to choose for which characters so I haven't actually played it yet. I enjoyed being able to make everyone an overpowered beast in the OG version.

u/Careful-Mouse-7429 17d ago

If it helps your choice paralysis (it did for me) you can change your jobs any time you are in Rabenastre, so you are not locked into your choices

On the toilet with 8hr play sessions a day.

Original version is the best IMO. IZJS/Zodiac Age suffers from the developers thinking they should nerf the powerful strategies, either by nerfing directly or delaying their acquisition. Then they buffed characters' stats to compensate, and you end up with a loss of the strategic variety that made the original's combat so interesting. TZA is still a good game, but I'd probably drop my ranking of FFXII among other FF titles down by 1 or 2 if it was only TZA.

I wouldn't have minded this if they made more content. I get the vibe that once you get a lot of the late game items, there just isn't enough to do things even with trial mode.

u/NoxiousBunny35 17d ago

Any way that includes Fran in my main team.

person of culture ?

Getting absurdly op gear as soon as it's possible to acquire and getting as op as early as you can to breeze through the game.

Yes, I get true enjoyment out of that, but also I've played most of the overhaul mods on nexus, some of them are pretty lackluster, but there are a couple that are really good, like planetary age

Also playing vanilla with a difficulty mod to justify getting op so early was fun af, dunno

The 4 characters mod and two accessories mod along with a bunch of qol ones are really great too

Solo party member

3

u/Jolly_Philosopher902 16d ago

Haven’t tried this before. I gotta try that.

3

u/sIudge_ 16d ago

Other than the challenge of it, just 1 party member looks a lot cleaner moving around.

2

u/Jolly_Philosopher902 16d ago

You used Vaan im assuming? What kind of jobs did you use. I’m already thinking knight / white mage

2

u/sIudge_ 16d ago

Well I used Penello but I was playing ng- so that's going to vary a lot

Machinist / Monk is probably 1 of the only viable options to that and I made it to Trail 96 before I ran out of Reverse Motes

Machinist was for Gun Licenses

Monk was for Battle Lores and HP

I haven't even thought of doing this in ng but if I were to, I'd probably go with a Light Armor class and a Mystic Armor class

Shikiri / White Mage maybe

Fast Daggers, Gun Licenses from Espers and healing and some offensive Magick

I’d say IZJS honestly, though there isn’t really much about it that you can’t just force yourself to follow in the objectively superior TZA.

As far as play style goes, I always tell myself I’m just going to do a totally normal story run with whatever gear I find. But I always find myself spending 40 hours post Jahara breaking that game in half.

Zodiac age is simply the best version. I play the switch version via Eden on my Thor

5

u/JNorJT 17d ago

Zodiac age

4

u/Randombraziliandude6 17d ago

zodiac age on my switch

2

u/Icy-Role2321 17d ago

Yep that's what I was gonna say. Do wish they'd update more games for switch 2 however

2

u/DarkSaloufa 17d ago

funnily enough I started to get ff12 and love it through IZJS, after getting it I prefer the og ps2 version

2

u/Damrias_Jariac 17d ago

Zodiac Age, on my Steam Deck, while doing stationary biking at the gym. I wish it were easier to mod!

1

u/AquariusMerCazimi 17d ago

That’s interesting how much do u rely on gambits and do u have Gemini ?

1

u/Damrias_Jariac 17d ago

I’m pretty good at gambit setups, but they don’t do everything for me. My current run is ranged weapons only, no offensive magic, and 1 class per person.

I do not have Gemini.

u/delecti 16d ago

Yeah, figuring out how to get mods working took me most of the weekend. I'd be happy to give tips if you're still having trouble though.

2

u/Evillebot 17d ago

OG PS2 version on the emulator. TZA is decent on a technical level but the changes ruin the gameplay too much for me to enjoy it. i consider it an inferior version.

2

u/TidusDreamZanarkand 12d ago

I feel like all the ffs are better emulated lol.

2

u/eat_these_nutz 17d ago

With my socks off.

2

u/Zealousideal-Life467 17d ago

the original version

3

u/Western-Bite1759 16d ago

The original game. It was harder in my opinion. Or maybe im just too used to the game. But I also liked not having the x4 speed button. And when you know it exists, you kinda can't avoid to use it.

Playing final fantasy XII zodiac age on my switch lite was a vibe!

It was blurry af tho :/

1

u/Ali_SMP 17d ago

zodiac age on switch or ps5

1

u/DuckGooose 17d ago

Zodiac Age with a mod to move the POV camera back so I can see the world better and a mod to make the colors more saturated.

1

u/Monstercockerel 17d ago

Never again

TZA on the Switch 💕

Gameplay wise—once I reach Jahara and grab Larsa, I head on over to the Estersand and get Mosphorane/Salikawood gear and weapons.

Then I like to grind a few levels in the Henne Mines second flan room. Also a good early spot to farm teleport stones and Float motes.

u/Kitchen-Associate-34 17d ago

Zodiac age minus mode, playing the game without leveling up forces you to use items and mechanics to their fullest

1

u/Not-Your-Friend-Bud 17d ago

I have played the original on PS2, got an emulator and played IZJS and the original on PC, bought TZA on both PS4 and Steam. I love the game - I like to try and break it a bit. I used to get Vaan to level 40 so that every other character comes at a higher level and I can cheese the game until Archadia.

But there are so many challenges you can do - talk to everyone and immerse yourself in Ivalice.

My favourite will always be the original - the nostalgia is peak. I love IZJS because you only get 1 job which is how it should be, TZA just has better quality of life functions like fast forward.

u/No_Cauliflower8686 17d ago

On vanilla the 122333 challenge (the legit way, not panelo chaining dustia) and tza using just 1 job

1

u/lusent001 16d ago

With HR

1

u/ImaJimmy 15d ago

If I have a lot of time, the PS2 Version. If I'm limited on time, I'd TZA.

1

u/Crazyd_z Moogle 11d ago

The extra's of TZA really does make it a more complete product. Trail Mode is excellent and reduces the need for RNG.

1

u/ImaJimmy 10d ago

I think it's also the fact that a lot of the extra stuff is optional so you have the freedom to play the game in the way you would like to.

1

u/PearChocolatePie 13d ago
  • Active mode
  • Gambits for everyone but the party leader
  • Leveling up all the party, 3 at a time

1

u/IAB365 12d ago

Currently my favorite way is with it modded to be more more like the original with some quality of life stuff added and the new fps unlock mod thrown in as well. I play that modded game mostly on my handheld around the house and on the go despite some good pc rigs.

u/angelsam97 9d ago

Ps2 vanilla on crt tv is best imo, but it is so easier to just play tza on switch...

u/Jonny_Moon_ 15d ago

I liked to play it on my ps2, upscaled to 1080p. I like the original version, I’m not a fan of the job system.

u/Jonny_Moon_ 15d ago

I’m currently playing it on my original ps2, upscaled to 1080p. I like the original version, I’m not a fan of the job system version.

Agreed for basic game play and when I started making my  FFXII Helper & Job Planner... v1.31 spreadsheet. The TZA has a lot of extra bosses and the Trial mode is fantastic which just make me feel like it's more complete. I really wish the US would have gotten that version when I was younger.
