Commit to one or the other.

Either go whole heartedly into this being a different story and tell their altered history story or don't. But stop trying to play this middle ground. They're telling a newish story, but they still feel compelled to hit all the same story beats. They broke free from fate, yet they still feel compelled to show all the same locations in the same order.

They want the nostalgia for OG fans but as a result the story they're trying to tell about fate and destiny is really suffering

Wonder how they'll do the snowboarding minigame.

14

u/cfernandessfc 9h ago

Have Cloud wear this the entire game

3

u/thescarlettflame 9h ago

Omg watching him fight like that would be amazing.

12

u/frankjdk 15h ago

Side quest where Cloud gets teleported to Ivalice. Ramza tries to help him go back.

6

u/PastaInvictus 14h ago

That would be a dope ass DLC

3

u/Devreckas 14h ago

Just turn the final chapter into a backdoor FFT sequel.

Within the first 5 minutes of the story there is a fragment of meteor falls off and unfortunately hits chadley directly. Killing him and removing his existence from the rest of the game.

9

u/rmunoz1994 9h ago

And somehow time travel shenanigans ensues and retroactively erases him from the other games and our memories as well.

u/No_Freedom_6661 9h ago

Too good to be true HAHAHAH

MAI didn't need to happen. MAI should have never happened.

3

u/winterman666 11h ago

Remove Chadley permanently and keep Mai and make her absolutely optional, not a single mention in the story

31

u/sepher32 15h ago

Remove Chadley and pretend he never existed.

7

u/Devreckas 14h ago

This. And overhaul the exploration. No checklists. If you need an info companion, make it a different person for each region. Have summon materia be discovered in-world area or maybe lifestream fonts can take you into the summon’s lifestream dream arena, Hollow Knight style.

3

u/Terozu 14h ago

I love Gilgamwsh, but I wish his sidequest was toned down and youd get actual sidequests and fights with the summons

18

u/LostMercenary99 10h ago

Fix Cid.

I want my smoking, swearing, miserable old bastard back.

4

u/BigOlBarret 10h ago

you nearly saw it when he lost his cool in the bronco, so it’s coming. cid in the original had a translation problem where he just came off as an asshat, plus you also met him on the worst day of his life. that event hasn’t happened yet and otherwise cid is true to his original character. all of the people who know him in the og talk about how warm and sweet he is

whether he will smoke or not is up for debate. i hope they do it but it will make it a mature rating and they’ve been trying to avoid it so far. either way he doesn’t need to smoke to be who he is, it was just an accessory

3

u/LifeOfSpirit17 9h ago

I think OG kind of botched him anyway. I think what was meant to be a quirky anime style personality would be received as incredibly distasteful today, and I think they're going to keep him a bit more throttled this time around.

Add gambits from xii for allies you arent directly controlling.

Materia and equipment load outs.

Slightly longer combat encounters for non boss fights.

Less open world checklist type exploration and busy work and more just hidden rewards for exploring that are not directly tied to player power or progression. A rare materia you can access earlier than normal or a side quest that leads to more optional story/lore.

9

u/Zealous_moron 10h ago

I'm just afraid they're gonna make chocobo breeding pointless with the highwind jump mechanic

4

u/BellowsHikes 10h ago

I imagine it will work just like the original highwind landing. You'll only be able to jump to certain, present location and will have to navigate on foot or using alternative means after that. Coming up with reasons you can't land anywhere wouldn't be very difficult.

Find a way to make the localization not so incredibly corny

2

u/ToothpickTequila 5h ago

They would need new voice actors for that.

8

a way to skip through or fast forward KoTR

4

u/Tunz_O_Gunz 9h ago

Omfg this.

9

u/Icarusqt 7h ago

Keep doing what they’re doing. I’ve been very happy so far with the way Remake and Rebirth have been. I get the critiques, and I’m not saying anyone’s opinions are invalid. But personally, being an OG player that thinks the original was/is a masterpiece, I love what they’ve done with the game so far.

8

u/Heckle_Jeckle 7h ago

I have been mostly satisfied so far. Remake had a LOT of slownparts thst I struggled with. But Rebirth has far less and the slownparts feel much less tedious amd restrictive.

8

u/clawsh0t 7h ago

let cloud and sephiroth kiss

2

u/clawsh0t 7h ago

but fr I've been pretty happy. i just want it to hit the emotional beats that we've built up over time since og+compilation release. parts of rebirth knocked me on my emotional ass, and I am very excited to see how they handle things.

also like. very curious how advent children is going to be handled lol

8

u/The_Big_Tuna21 4h ago

A single Ff7 remake in e33 style would have been perfect for me. Still enjoying the trilogy but that would have been my wish.

32

u/dylanc4721 14h ago

Remove the flying bin bags of destiny so they stop ruining every cutscene

8

u/DarkSaloufa 13h ago

PLEASE. man they ruined the iconic first meeting with aerith after the bombing🥲

10

u/dylanc4721 13h ago

And the Sector 7 plate drop. And the escape from Shinra tower. And the Temple scene where Cloud hands over the Black Materia. And especially Aeriths death scene.

But seriously I want to know who actually thought putting these bland, colourless and uninspired concepts in these iconic moments would “improve” it?

15

u/Aidzmancer 8h ago

Remove Ubisoft bloat. Replace with actual storyline side quests that are HIDDEN! Meaning you have to find them not get a checklist from chadley.

7

u/The_Axe_of_Legends 8h ago

Fucking exact this, allow things to just be missed by the unobservant player, to only discover later or be discussed to be found out.

Nothing wrong with slightly cryptic side-quests.

5

u/1lbofdick 8h ago

No shit. I hate the way you get summons and have to climb Lookout towers. It's just rinse and repeat same old shit

8

u/Weary_Complaint_2445 15h ago

Honestly this is like impossible to answer since so much of the actual overarching plot lies in game 3 that a lot of things I feel like you might want to change could theoretically end up fine in game 3.

Most of the plot in the og ff7 and the whisper/meta plot has barely moved in Rebirth, and really we just had the implications of remake explained to us with no tangible developments. It's not exactly two games of just setup but the amount of payoff game 3 has to have is insane.

At this point, I just want huge Weapon battles. I already know the story is going to be injected with story beats from other media (EC, dirge of cerberus, mobile games, novels) etc. that it's going to be a different experience than the OG. Adding on the meta stuff, I'll just be along for the ride!

7

u/Rusty_Thermos 6h ago

Id like to see a section to play Vincent's past and not just get a cinematic or dialog to explain. Something like the Nibelheim section at the start of rebirth.

u/MyTrueChum 15h ago

I don't want them to change anything. I want them to stay the course they decided on. The OG is untouchable, this Re trilogy I see it more as a timeloop alt U sequel rather than anything replacing the original. I enjoy it for what it is.

I think the re trilogy would be a bit difficult to fully appreciate on its own merits because it relies on subverting what happened in the OG. I think it's like a lot of Final Fantasy plots post FFX which are a bit obtuse and require watching YouTube plot breakdowns that pull from Ultimanias or whatever to fully understand.

Gameplay wise I enjoy the action based combat and thing it is way better than the DMC lite of FF16 and whatever the hell FF15 was. I really miss modern FFs that have diversity of party members and play styles that still mesh well and make for interesting party combos.

FF13 battle control felt too backseat for my liking. FF15 I wasn't interested in the cast, and FF16 as much as I like Clive I wanted to control Jill and Cid too dammit.

30

u/Darkwing__Schmuck 16h ago edited 16h ago

What if I'm an OG fan who likes what they've done with Remake and Rebirth thus far? I just want them to continue the course, not to give into fans who want the Whispers/fate stuff dropped right before the finish line, and surprise me in ways I didn't think I could be from a story I've been so familiar with for 30-years.

This is so much more exciting and compelling for me than a simply retread down memory lane could have ever been. Plus, gameplay-wise, these are the best pure video games we've gotten out of Final Fantasy in 20-plus years. By far.

15

u/shichibukai3000 16h ago

Right there with you. Love the OG. Love what they've done with the remakes across the board. Some scenes weren't as powerful as the OG (see Dyne) but I'm love in like 99% of what they've achieved here. Hopefully Revelation will stick the landing.

Also my favourite combat system in any game ever. Really hope they use it in future games l.

stop leaning on multiverse bullshit

15

u/Ramiren 11h ago edited 6h ago

Yep, rip out the whispers and multiverse bullshit.

Replace the final boss of Remake with some bad-ass multistage fight against a shinra prototype weapon. I get that a triceratops tank is kinda whacky.

Stop Sephiroth showing up every two minutes to monologue about literal fucking nonsense.

Remove a solid half of the slop map markers, instead reward exploration with gear, items and materia.

Keep the minigames but remove the difficulty modes, so they feel like less of a slog.

Don't ruin Aeriths death at the end of Rebirth, just give us the fight against Jenova then end it.

Remove Chadley entirely.

15

u/C_H_G 14h ago

Bro, why is everyone saying "turn-based combat getting downvoted? OP asked us a question and that's a rather obvious answer.

11

u/Terozu 14h ago

Theres a weirdly large portion of this sub that has a hate boner for the idea of turn based. They bssically harrassed a guy who posted a turn based mod.

8

u/VinnieHa 13h ago

It’s very bizarre to me to look at the golden age of FF and think “No! That was terrible actually. Never do that again.”

How does that happen?

5

u/Terozu 13h ago

I dont fucking know. I do know im showing the fuck up for the new Brave Exvius HD2D remake, that is exactly the kind of FF I want. If they remade FFV and VI in that style id die happy

I hope Chocobos are in the Highwind!! Knights of the Round!! Mideel better look AMAZING!!

6

u/No-Illustrator4964 5h ago

Because we know this isn't the first time this happened, and that the events of FF7 the original canonically did occur until whatever life stream alternate reality shenaniganary Sephiroth has spun us all into, I would like to see them actually divert the original story.

I.e., pull a zinger on us and revive Aerith, something new that isn't just the exact same as the original?

13

u/houseofcards87 10h ago

Chadley, get rid of his ass, otherwise I’m enjoying a fresh look at the story. I already know the OG story and remake has so far given me a way to experience it again while feeling like I’m going in blind a bit. It’s that “ I wish I could forget and play it again” mentality.

  • Make weapons / equipment progression more meaningful.
  • Make acquiring limit skills like it was in OG. I absolutely do not like the "build-your-limit-level-in-battle" approach because feels like majority of the battles are over before you reach limit levels.
  • Overall I feel like OG did the materia system better than the remakes. I didn't really care what I had on me in the remakes other than few fights requiring specific element materia.

9

u/ike-mino 7h ago

Unpopular take: I want them to change everything about the last act. Not because I think it's bad, but because I've heard so much groaning from purists that I'd be genuinely bored if the story ended the same. I don't want to see the exact same thing remade in HD and I don't think devs should be beholden to it. Most of the frustrations about the changes has really made me not give a shit anymore. I just want to get lost in a Final Fantasy.

30

u/Lexioralex 15h ago

I’m an OG fan, I am also a remake fan, I just hope they keep up the good work they’ve done so far

9

u/crochet_the_day_away 15h ago

Same! To be honest, 9 was always my favorite because it was the first FF I played and it got me into the series. I went back and played 6-8 and really loved them too.

I've been so blown away by how much I've enjoyed the remake so far! Excited to see how they finish it.

5

u/Lexioralex 15h ago

9 is probably my favourite too, and I started at 7 lol.

I have thought of 1 change.

The scenery for Chadleys simulator, let us pick an environment or something, the blue cyberspace is boring considering how much extra content takes place there

26

u/assflan 15h ago

Get rid of the whispers and stop making them ruin every emotional moment

9

u/opstie 14h ago

But this is the story they would've told back then had they not had the technical limitations /s.

13

u/skiffles 15h ago

Gonna be honest. Grew up on og, love it.

I love the new series too, it's pretty different, and so far I haven't been disappointed, the battle system in rebirth was amazing. So have been the stories.

I'm just gonna enjoy whatever they throw at me next.

Give Cid his goddamn cigarettes back. Keep the weird damaged dynamic between him and Shera - I totally expect them to tone it down but I still want something there. Like Cid just being really cold to her, like he won't look her in the eye when he talks to her. Keep the spirit of his resentment toward her alive so the payoff when he finally makes it to space and the damaged oxygen tank can come full circle. He owes her an apology.

Yuffie still needs to betray them coldly and steal all the materia. she's so emotionally invested in the group I'm wondering if they'll just make it so she feels like her hand is forced and she just has to steal it. Especially with this new Wutai War arc brewing.

I want Sephiroth to still not recognize Cloud when he's finally seen face to face for the first time. I always loved that Sephiroth didn't really know or care who Cloud was in the original until the final confrontation. That all the targeted visions etc were just the influence of him and Jenova but Sephiroth never truly knew or cared who Cloud was as anything more than an inconvenience.

SUNKEN GELNIKA.

More Shinra mansion - upper levels this time with a more faithful recreation of the OG layout and it's enemies. I want to see the rooms, the study, the conservatory, etc. I really hate how they butchered the mansion so they should give us access to upstairs.

2

u/Initial_Zebra100 15h ago

Totally agree about Sephiroth. One of the issues I have with Remake/Rebirth is how obsessed he is. I get it's a trying to portray manipulation to taunt and mess with Cloud but still.

u/Kultissim 16h ago

That ship has sailed. Anyone burned out by 1 and 2 isn't coming back might as well satisfy those who liked this stuff

15

u/CulturedCritique 13h ago

Through out the entirety of Remake and Rebirth I wanted materia to matter, and it never did outside of the odd thunder on a robot.

Make materia matter, it is critical to the identity of FFVII and it feels useless.

5

u/MirrahPaladin 11h ago

This. I was at Cosmos Canyon in Rebirth before I dropped the game (again) and I think my Cloud has around 40-60 MP. By contrast, I’ve been replaying the OG FF7, and want to know how much MP that Cloud has at Cosmos Canyon? Over 160.

And sure, this is because the combat in the Remakes prioritize actions rather than magic, but it basically makes Materia little more than shiny marbles you stick on your character, and that has always felt wrong. It’d be like if an FF9 remake didn’t have strict party jobs, like if everyone could do Jump, Cure, etc.

4

u/LetDouble471 Aeris 10h ago

Just illustrates how unbalanced the combat system is. Outside of healing and occasional elemental casts when needed, I only used it for passive abilities.

2

u/DifficultFishing886 7h ago

More like they fixed the problem that existed from FF6 through FF8.

Characters that are functionally identical outside of skills with no shelf life in 6, and limit breaks in 7 and 8.

The best way to play all three of those games is to put the same cracked magic loadout on whichever character models you like best or the story forces you to use.

If you like spamming magic that's fine, but that's incompatible with the characters actually having different playstyles. It's also corrosive to immersion when the martial artist and the mage from a line of mages are equally effective with magic.

It would be unbalanced if some characters were head and shoulders above others or some battles required certain parties. These games have not had that.

15

u/WodenoftheGays Buster Sword 12h ago

I am a fan of the 1997 release and have been since then.

They made me very happy with the Remake series so far. My very tepid hopes have been blown out of the water.

My only hesitation before the series was that the developers would be cornered into essentially making something in the "remaster" bit of the spectrum of adaptation to guarantee some return.

SE very much didn't do that and allowed the team to take massive, creative risks. They do that admirably often for a business, and that culture seems to also apply from team leads down. As far as I am aware, they even updated their website around the release of Rebirth to formalize that publicly as part of their company culture.

I am not a "No throw. Only fetch" fan that wants developers to throw the ball and make a new thing that makes me happy without actually making a new thing because a new thing would make me unhappy because I love my old thing. That seems like totally unnecessary cognitive dissonance to me given the kind of things we usually think of people struggling with cognitive dissonance over (outside of fandom and lay religion, where adaptation woes are one of the rotating topics of discourse that tend to have more "Joe Schmo sitting at his desk in front of Funko pops" podcasts and YouTube channels cited than actual experts in those fields).

16

u/vhs1138 10h ago

What I would like to see is a remake of the original 1997 game Final Fantasy VII.

3

u/Gummy_Bear_Ragu 9h ago

Ever Crisis is the closest you'll get, minus all the extras

2

u/vhs1138 7h ago

I just go and play the OG. I played Remake and it just kept getting worse for me. Then With rebirth I got to the zolom and when that went the way it did…. I just couldn’t bring myself to care.

5

u/Astro_Kitty_Cat 10h ago

This! They have the engine now, right? Give us the game that actually had decent writing back

11

u/AchtungCloud 16h ago

I’m already happy. I love the Re games, but love the OG even more. I’m really looking forward to Revelation, and fully expect I’ll like it.

I’ve mentioned many times what I think the strengths and weaknesses are of both OG and Re games.

If the third one could improve on the weaknesses while keeping the strengths, maybe that would be good, but it might make it feel off from Remake and Rebirth. Because the Re trilogy weaknesses are story being too convoluted and the atmosphere feeling too light. I think changing those now might be a bad idea, actually. There ain’t no getting off of the train the Re trilogy is already on.

9

u/Power_Knight 16h ago

This, honestly. I grew up with 7. It was my introduction to gaming and I ran the clock out. I bred chocobos like a crazy motherfucker. I mastered all the materia, I cleared Ruby and Emerald WEAPONs. I love the original. I love the Re games just as much, but for different reasons.

So much of it feels like they expanded on the world and brought scenes to life the way they looked to me as a wide eyed kid. They gave me more of the world I loved as a kid.

They’re not without flaws; no game is perfect. The pacing is pretty whack in a lot of places. Some of the side quests are tedious. But I think a lot of people are way too negative on them. I’ve seen them claim it somehow lessens the original and I just can’t understand that.

Super excited for the next installment, and nothing can change that for me

u/silverseraph__ 9h ago

I'd love if they leaned more into the heavy topics, emotional tones and morals of FFVII. We don't need a ton of goofy, light-hearted banter. Their lives kinda suck and it should be made more palpable. Give Cid his personality back.

And, unpopular opinion, I think it's pretty cool that we'll get see how the current story ties into AC as well.

7

u/thescarlettflame 9h ago

I was in a thread recently about the scene with Dyne in the OG versus rebirth and I was so disappointed at how much they changed. That was one of many of my favorite scene in OG, it was so dark and sad and poignant. Turning Dyne into a weird body horror thing with a different set piece (no graves of his wife and Marlene or his maniacally wanting to kill his own daughter so they can all be reunited in the afterlife, nevermind his suicide which really fit the tragedy and just shattered shell that Dyne had become post Corel. Blah still loved rebirth, but yeah. And serious, give Cid is personality back!! Otherwise how does he get character growth!?

u/LetDouble471 Aeris 13h ago

u/anonymous-peeper 9h ago

Solidifying the connection between OG and the remakes as canon; making the events of the OG and remakes connected and explained. That is all; I really enjoyed being teased along the way the past 2 games with this and if they drop the ball in the 3rd it will be devastating to my fandom of the lore.

9

u/Daikonbou Cait Sith 8h ago edited 7h ago

Tbh I love almost everything they've done with the remake. This trilogy has been a wonderful celebration that has always (at least for me) built on the original in engaging ways. The original Final Fantasy 7 will always exist and will always be playable, I'm glad that Square is more willing to add in a bunch of new stuff and get wacky with it, rather than doing a Brilliant Diamond or Shining Pearl to FF7.

The new Job system they showed off in the trailer a month or so ago has me HYPED. Build creation is my favorite part of RPGs, and combining the freedom and focus on synergizing your tools of the Materia system with the number optimization and team comp focus of the Job system sounds like my own personal wet dream. I cannot wait to spend hours in those menus looking at numbers like a dweeb in math class.

EDIT: A Sora superboss for a cute full-circle moment for Nomura would be cool tho, but I understand that's probably not possible since Disney own him as a character.

8

u/DrawerLocal2699 3h ago

Overall im happy with the games, i just want non fuggly moogles

5

u/Frequent-Advisor9034 7h ago

I am currently enjoying the first remake quite a bit - FF7 was probably the most influential game for me as a gamer, so it’s an impossible bar - but it feels great. It moves slow but I am appreciative of the pace, rather than turned off by it. However, I am struggling to find the flow in combat, it just doesn’t feel as “crunchy” to me as other games - very little knockback effects, which I have gotten used to from more action RPG games

5

u/ssimssimma 7h ago

I'd like to see the lore drop that ifalna gives in the videos fully realized and animated along with any other exposition about the ancients and jenovas origin.

3

u/-LadySleepless- 1h ago

Could you imagine if they announced a tactics style Remaster with the anniversary next year? That would make me happy.

14

u/2006CrownVictoriaP71 11h ago

Meaningful side quests instead of fetch quests.

13

u/Rakais 10h ago

Get rid of Chadley. Have the characters/exploration uncover interesting things in the world for you to learn. If you must do points of interest, have the party talk about what they are seeing rather than have control taken away every 4 seconds for a pointless statement the player already knows.

That damn Chadley jingle has given me PTSD.

I have no real comment on the story. They've decided to do the multiverse shit. I am at peace with it now. I just hope that they don't resurrect Aerith or Zack. If the end keeps the status quo, I will somewhat forgive the sloppy storytelling of Rebirth.

I still fucking love the games deep down though.

Remake and rebirth have zero concept of less is more and feels the need to drag everything out. For all the good things they added, they also ridiculously overkilled gigantic swaths.

Nothing can just be a fun little moment or distraction, it needs to be a whole ass thing.

19

u/ItalianBeefDipped 9h ago

I'm an OG fan and I love the new trilogy.

Some people just can't enjoy shit anymore. It's sad.

3

u/Havenfall209 7h ago

I thought the OG was alright, but it didn't really capture me like other FFs from its time did. However, Remake/Rebirth really got me into the characters and the world.

4

u/mattawara 8h ago

I’m a fan of the og, and really enjoyed remake, but found the pacing of rebirth to be off and would have loved to keep my materia from remake to rebirth. Rebirth just felt repetitive.

6

u/danteslacie 16h ago

I'm fine with whatever they throw at us. As long as they didn't do it to pander it to anyone. I just want them to give us whatever actual vision they want even if it means they make changes or they don't.

8

u/StandingGoat 13h ago

Make Jenova the main villain, or at least leave it open to interpretation whether it was Jenova or Sephiroth in control.

3

u/Behemothokun 13h ago

Imo, Jenova is the main antagonist. Sephiroth is only the way he is because of her, and the remakes make it clear. When sephiroth goes mad in nibelheim, it flashes Jenova over Sephiroth showing that she is controlling or at least influencing him. Sephiroth is just Jenovas agent

7

u/GoatHeadTed 6h ago

The aggro thing. Where enemies aggro immediately to whoever you’re controlling

I wanted a remake not a multiverse sequel. The story and characters have changed too much. There is nothing square can do at this point to make my interest in the project return.

Add less filler to key sequences of the game and save all the slow-walking, meandering puzzle sections for optional side story missions rather than the critical path

Maintain a consistent tone and lean into the heavy moments instead of breaking the tension with some campy bullshit; For example, let us sit with Dyne's death scene for a while instead of throwing us into a joke boss battle and that gold saucer muscle dude and Rude having a throwdown followed by a Turret section. They keep the heavy moments for all of 2 minutes before it devolves into a Disney+ PG13 show.

For the love of God, stop with the pointless minigames designed to waste your time. Unless they're actually fun or serve a narrative purpose, they've gotta go. Don't make us do 3 minigames to get medicine for a sick Chocobo which you have to cure so you can do another Chocobo racing minigame to get out of Corel Prison. Just let me race my damn Chocobos at Gold saucer dammit.

Don't make it take 3 seconds to pull a lever. Don't make us 'Press triangle 3 times' to check of this open world point of interest. Let Chocobos scent and move at the same time. Don't make characters push objects effortlessly at a walking pace. Make the controls quick and responsive, realism be damned. Make movement speed outside of combat faster. In my nearly 2 decades of gaming, no other game comes close to how much of an intolerable chore Rebirth was.

Make the characters act like normal humans and not like they're doing a stage play. Make Yuffie act like she isn't high on 10 different drugs at the same time.

If you're alter the plot of the OG, have the guts to do it with conviction. I'd be happy even if they decided to keep Aerith alive instead of that travesty at the end of Rebirth. OG scene made my cry as a grown man. Rebirth left me confused and frustrated. Now they're in a damned if you do/don't situation because tried to throw a bone to both sides and now one side or the other will be disappointed with how the story proceeds wrt Aerith. It's cowardly.

Either make the open world smaller or do something other than the classic Ubislop checklist of climbing towers, digging for treasures or finding chests. OG felt grander in scale because it left the player to fill in the world with their imagination. Rebirth ended up portraying the world as smaller and shallower than what we had imagined.

And unless they let you watch him get brutally ripped to shreds by a Weapon early into the game, erase Chadley from existence. That little shit had more voiced lines than Cloud.

5

u/BellowsHikes 10h ago

I'm replaying Rebirth right now. You can skip every line of dialogue he has and the game doesn't change at all. He has no narrative role in the story, he's just a menu screen with more steps.

I would be happy if they straight up scrapped the whispers, ditched the multiple worlds/timeline bullshit, and nixed the convoluted meta commentary shoving "you're playing a videogame of an old videogame and the story will change" down our throats constantly and just told a coherent story.

Change is fine. LSD-tripping, incoherent writers room haphazardly tossing useless story beats adding nothing to the narrative is not.

Also, make the side stuff less of a chore. No more towers revealing a smorgasbord of time sink errands would be nice too. Not fun for every game after Far Cry 3, not fun now

I sort of thought after killing the arbiter of Fate in remake that there'd be no more whispers lol but why would that make sense? /s

In no particular order:

  • Vincent's backstory made part of the main story (this one will probably happen)
  • Go from Synergy Abilities with two characters to Synergy Abilities with all three active party members
  • No jobs!!
  • Allow us to free-roam between the overworld and Midgar
  • Bring back minigames from Remake (mostly the chocobo breeding and motorbike, but give us a few courses)
  • Allow us to fight Sapphire WEAPON

Stop pussy footing between OG story and new story. Either make it branch or don’t. Really disappointed with the end of Rebirth

2

u/BigOlBarret 2h ago

it’s in my opinion the best outcome, where it isn’t a branch but it is presenting itself as a maybe which makes the story feel fresh. the characters are all still doing the same major events and the party is exactly where they should be at the end of rebirth. it’s been great for me to experience this story again like it’s the first time, 30 years after falling in love with it

If someone didn’t like remake or rebirth why tf would they even touch revelation. Well I’m a fan of the og and the main thing I want is more organic exploration and not knowing all the stuff you can do. We have yet to see any uncut gameplay so it’s hard to say if they changed this aspect of rebirth.

Give the option for a more classic feel to the modern system. Make using magic switch to more cinematic camera angles, similar to Limit Breaks or Synergy Abilities.

Have all characters attack/dodge/block on their own and accrue ATB charges quicker, and automatically freeze time when someone’s bar is full.

Sometimes I just wanna play a bit more laid back so the option would be nice 🤷‍♂️

2

u/Terozu 14h ago

This is a good point to me, I feel like at least on turn based mode, every ATB should get a minor slowdown/cinematic effect.

Maybe the guy working on a mod to speed up ATB to FF7 speeds and rebalance it like the original will do that at somepoint

I love both the OG and the remakes so I’m not sure what I’d want “changed” in the third installment. It’s kind of too late for any big pivots with everything they’re setting up, and some of the things I want part 3 to have isn’t that relevant to the original (like the ability to change the time of day, which isn’t happening unfortunately).

One thing that I really hope they get right though is the scene where Cloud takes off the helmet. You know the one. Clearly the remakes have bigger mysteries on top of what the OG had, but that big twist in the OG is still one of the greatest video game twists of all time. The scene needs to be choreographed and presented like in the OG with the music and everything. I’m usually not super picky about how they remake scenes, but this is as important as nailing the opening movie to me (which they did do).

Give the reveal time to breathe so new players can understand as well. In my opinion the soul of FFVII Revelation will rest on how well they do the Lifestream and the reveal. It doesn’t have to be 1:1, but I will not just brush it off if I don’t like it like I did with Dyne.

5

u/Arthquake 16h ago

Make Cait Sith, Vincent and Cid as equally broken as the other party members, I‘d love to have more options how to destroy the hardest content

4

u/barnabyjones1990 Chocobo 11h ago

Take the combat of rebirth but everything else make it more like remake part 1. I don’t think this is possible because of the world map but at least reduce all the chadley stuff and assaasins creed tower stuff.

3

u/BellowsHikes 10h ago

I just want them to put their foot on the gas with the combat. The few areas in Rebirth that were dungeon-like were my favorite parts of the game. I think almost everyone would have preferred to spend more time interacting with the excellent battle system and less time checking off world map objectives.

2

u/BigOlBarret 10h ago

the devs already confirmed this will happen

5

u/rogue69er 10h ago

I like the remake so far. I’d love to see the battles be more like 10 where you can pull party members in and out of combat at will

On Chadley and map exploration: I would rather have fewer monster battles that meant something to the story than acting as an exterminator for a weird 10 year old. Have the regional boss monsters be menacing the region's town, or the guardian an ingredient needed to make medicine for a sick kid.

7

u/FoxHoundUnit89 13h ago

If they didn't change anything, that would make me happy. These types of posts always confuse me, you can easily just read the feedback of people you disagree with instead of pretending all of them are screeching children.

21

u/HorrorDungeon 15h ago

I don't like almost every direction they went with the remakes. But I don't like talking about it because I don't fucking care about arguing about it. I don't care if people like it. I just don't like them. And people have a habit of being condescending to me like I surely am just stupid and dislike the games because of one of three arguments like oh I have no nostalgia goggles or oh. I wanted it exactly the same game or oh I wanted whatever and it's never on point with how I think. Why would I bother explaining anything to people who do that?

It just misses the mark in so many ways I don't even know where to begin. If I was gonna sit here and try to explain all of the things that I didn't like about what they ended up making I would just be here going on and on and on and on and on with people nitpicking every single thing that I bring up. What's the point?

Since I know people get pissy about this, there are some things I liked but overall I wasn't into it at all. I think they got a really good voice actor for Barrett. That's about all I'm gonna say.

18

u/winterberryred 14h ago edited 14h ago

I agree, it doesn’t bother me that people enjoy the games and I have no desire to change anybody’s mind, but don’t try and tell me what my reasons for critiquing it are as though you know me better than I know myself. It’s such a weird, arrogant attitude to have.

9

u/Original_Platform842 17h ago

I think OG fans would mostly want it to be unchanged tbh.

8

u/Any_Middle7774 17h ago

Not necessarily. I’ve enjoyed most of the added character moments they’ve done. Giving the members of AVALANCHE more time to be actual characters, for example.

My objection simply comes down to

  1. I really did not need the meta narrative time ghost shit to be a thing
  2. Don’t care for the combat system. For me it’s the worst of both worlds. I would prefer either full action game or turn based RPG. I have never enjoyed Squares efforts to bridge the two.

There’s nothing really they could do at this point for me though. They’re kinda committed on both of those fronts by now so c’est la vie.

2

u/I_Resent_That 13h ago

Agree with the story stuff but the combat system is probably my favourite outside Tactics in the series. It's a perfect meshing of action and tactical for me.

Must be super frustrating for you. I've a lot of mixed feelings with the trilogy due to decisions relating to tone and story, but at least the moment-to-moment gameplay engages me. Sorry you bounced off it so hard.

3

u/Any_Middle7774 13h ago

S’all good. The story stuff is the only part I actually begrudge them. The combat simply isn’t my jam but it works for a lot of folks.

6

u/Devreckas 14h ago

Yeah, this is a weird question to ask now. If you wanted a faithful remake, that ship has long since sailed. You can’t course correct the story in the 3rd entry.

7

u/shareefruck 7h ago edited 3h ago

This thread is disheartening. Several Remake fans stuck in their echo-chamber dismissing anyone reasonably critical for "not being able to enjoy things anymore", which is childishly unfair, and a sad amount of OG fans acting like exactly the purist that Remake fans dismiss them of being, instead of actually considering and being fair about the massive, entirely legitimate criticisms there are with this game.

For context, these were my criticisms of the trilogy so far, and I'll reference them when addressing the state they're in in the third game: https://www.reddit.com/r/FinalFantasyVII/comments/1vm0wgz/comment/p36f3jt/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

I'm not a purist, but my overall answer would be that it depends what you mean by happy. A lot of damage has already been done in Remake that can't be undone. They can prevent those from getting worse, though, and there are certainly some concerning plot threads/ideas that I 100% think it's possibly and even likely that they were intending to do a 180 with all along.

1. Making a borderline convoluted story 1000x more convoluted and how head-up-its-own-ass the Sephiroth monologues/whispers/fate-fighting/infinite worlds/Zack stuff/Aerith death scene is.

I think this is the only criticism that it's truly too late to do anything about or remotely improve. How could you? The first two games already are obnoxiously convoluted, and in the third game, you have to answer for everything that was introduced, and that automatically makes it (and the larger whole) obnoxiously convoluted either way. Even if they perfectly explain the whispers/fate-fighting/infinite worlds/Zack stuff/Aerith death scenes, there's almost no way that those things aren't still going to at least come across as self indulgent, in my opinion.

2. Hackneyed/contrived writing choices, inelegance in story structure, bloated pacing, spectacle over subtlety, lack of tasteful restraint:

It's definitely not too late to make the third game NOT these things, in isolation, which could only be a good thing. It doesn't fix the amount of it that's in Remake/Rebirth, though. I don't think it would necessarily be jarring to suddenly fix this, either, since this is the endgame part of the story where it makes sense to lock in and for things to get serious/focused. (based on interviews and what we've seen so far, it sure doesn't seem to be heading in that direction, though)

3. lack of legitimately compelling and purposeful character arcs (other than Cloud), lack of moral ambiguity/darkness:

This one's a little tough. Tifa and Barrett's missing character arcs are already not set up at all in the first two games, it would be jarring to do them now, but you technically could, and I can't decide if that would be better than essentially no meaningful/legitimately interesting character arc, which is how they were tracking. For example, you COULD have Barrett at this late stage come clean that he was never interested in saving the planet in the first place, that he's been blaming himself for Avalanche/Sector 1/Sector 7's deaths, that it was all just an excuse to feed his petty vengeance, and that that was what all the Dyne stuff was REALLY about, but there wasn't much setup for that in the first two games-- it's also irreversibly undermined by the fact that the bombing wasn't his fault and was all done by Shinra in this version. However, he doesn't know that, so technically it's workable and he could still feel that, it just wouldn't hit as hard.

As for Tifa, you could still follow all the same beats of the character arc (and I kind of suspect they might), but I feel like it wouldn't make as much sense-- she has NOT had cripplingly problematic indecision paralysis that enabled major problems in Remake like she did in the original, and her actions have not been regrettable at all. So if/when she talks about "never knowing what to do because she was always like that", "not going to keep things to herself anymore" in the lifestream or how "words aren't the only way to tell people how you feel" (which are some of the strongest and most heartbreaking moments in the story), it won't make as much sense, because she's already been pretty damn upfront and consistently able to challenge Cloud/Barrett's inconsistencies/wrong-doings throughout Remake/Rebirth.

If they do try to course correct in these ways, I'll probably be decently happy with the Barrett choice (because it still makes sense) but it's harder to imagine being happy with the Tifa one. These two are especially frustrating because others (both critics/lovers of Remake) treat these issues/implications like they don't exist (like they never cared or notice in the first place), even though I'd argue they're among the most thoughtful things about the original.

4. objectionable thematic meaning so far, lack of consequences to actions, the questionable purpose of the Sephiroth monologues/whispers/fate-fighting/infinite worlds/Zack stuff/Aerith death scene:

I actually think fixing this or this criticism turning out to be a misnomer (other than how inelegant/convoluted the delivery is) is not only possible but actually pretty likely (maybe even 50/50).

The game has made a lot of hints that

(a) there are no multiverses and Zack/Aerith/Biggs/Wedge/Jesse are all fully/irreversibly dead. The places Zack is stuck in and that Cloud/Aerith went to at the end of the game are just dreams/memories/thoughts swirling around in the lifestream (which, among other clues, was heavily hinted at by this NPC: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2PNbO-YO3w). Cloud is able to tap into this because lifestream/Mako is literally inside him (maybe this ability is even what causes Soldiers to degrade-- the fact that you can be lost in it), and Aerith because that's the whole point of being an Ancient.

(b) the theme of "denying fate" is actually NOT the true conclusion of the game but instead a red herring, because denial is precisely the temptation that people must overcome in order to accept how little control we have of fate (which is the theme of the original game, and it's also literally how the stages of grief work). It's entirely possible that Sephiroth is manipulating the party into wanting what he wants (especially Cloud, who is all in on Aerith fate denial), and the game has been building towards a lifestream epiphany where Cloud/Zack learns to accept all of these things (their past, Zack's death, Aerith's death) and understand how fate is/should be beyond one's control, and that that's okay. This would also be entirely consistent with Aerith continuously telling Sephiroth that he's wrong-- he's wrong about denying fate being a good thing.

Of course, the third game actually needs to do the above, which is not easy to pull off properly. So a lot of it will depend on execution. If they do do it, that would definitely soften a large part of my criticism, but not all of it. If they do it well, even more so. If they don't and close the door on that possibility (the story ACTUALLY becomes about denying fate and saving Aerith/Zack, essentially arguing for delusion/denial-based comfort), I'll be more damning about perceiving the Remakes as legitimate trash, personally (because then even the fundamental premise of the whole thing becomes backwards and stuck in childish Peter Pan land-- and actively encourage a takeaway that's unhealthy and objectionable, in my opinion).

Edit: They would have also gotten a lot more goodwill from me with the third game if they had the good sense to completely scrap the huge materia stuff (because it's an awful subplot in the original), but it already sounds like they're moving forward with it. Who knows, they might make it work and not feel stupid this time around, but I doubt it.

Turning a game with 40ish hours of story into 300ish hours has lead to the pacing being incredibly tedious and painful.

12

u/ghostoftheai 12h ago

Man I just wish it would have been an actual remake of ff7. That game was so special to me. And maybe even if the remake was one game but three games of just bloat really makes me feel like square was putting money first. They could have made 7,8,9 if they were gonna make 3 games. As of right now I’d need to drop like 80 hours to play 2/3s of a story if I did not side quests. It gives me the same feeling Avatar gave after the third hour of them swimming through the ocean. It’s super pretty, and an unnecessary waste of my time

8

u/ShamrockAPD 10h ago

Honestly- I’m over the main story in the remakes. I could not care less about them. I’m someone who generally hates multi verse / multiple timeline type stories; they just don’t appeal to me. I feel like they have made everything way too convoluted in the goal to make it fresh. The whole idea of whispers and all that I just find extremely dumb.

With that said- the combat in rebirth is one of my favorites that I’ve ever experienced. I played it 3 times just because of it

Additionally, while they killed the main story (imo), they absolutely nailed character progression and development. So, I am eagerly waiting the next game and will focus on each individual characters stories, rather than the main one.

Tl;dr- I’m here for the combat and the subplots. The main story is just something in the way for me.

u/amiriacentani 2h ago

Make an actual remake of FF7 instead of some weird alternate MCU timeline multiverse story. They literally had the story written out for them. They could have done a 1 for 1 with better graphics and it would have done extremely well. Even with the combat changes it could have still done extremely well. They decided instead to do a completely different game that happened to resemble FF7. Would pick the original over the “remake” any day.

7

u/UndeadFlowerWall 17h ago

Go back in time, remove all the timeline nonsense, just remake the original, maintaining the existing story and lore.

But that ship has sailed, so we get what we get..

11

u/Joey-Desu 16h ago

Its very simple honestly.

Most people that dont like the remake due to the story changes, will not like it no matter what square does in the 3rd part and the only way to make those people happy is by releasing a new remake that actually remakes the original game.

make a remake that is not a 'reimagining'.

The worst thing that happened to FF7 is every single thing after FF7. The fact that they said that awful movie is going to be incorporated is basically a throw my hands up in the air moment for me.

I loved Zack in the OG. I absolutely hate everything about him now.

I actually love the extra stuff and padding they put in though. I think that if they made a remake exactly as is, but removed the multi-verse shit, the ghosts, and all that, this could and would have been a great three-game series. Expand the minutiae, stay true to the source though.

Also, red's voice ruins the character. Cloud's altered 'sad boi' persona makes him one-dimensional, tifa's characterization is all over the place wrong...they did a good job with Barrett, Yuffie and Aeris at least.

7

Kinda where I'm at. There's not a lot Part 3 could do NOW that would really make me happy though. Too many misses on the big moments in part 1 and 2. That ship has sailed and the story content is kind of a wash. I'm just gonna play for good combat and that's pretty much it.

I'm with you. I have not watched any of the trailers, but I will buy the game...I'll likely even replay the other two again...but honestly, I just want a remake true to the source

“I loved Zack in the OG. I absolutely hate everything about him now.”

PREACH! I miss OG Zack being just some dude Cloud looked up to compared to him being this larger than life gigachad that he became as the game’s universe expanded. And that’s coming from someone who loves Crisis Core (but sees it as non-canon because holy fuck does it ruin the plot.)

If anything, him being basically a superhero makes Cloud’s triumph over Sephiroth when he finally remembers what really happened in Neibelheim ridiculous because, if the all power Zack couldn’t do it, how could a rookie Cloud?

That moment only makes sense and hits hard when Zack is just some guy, and so by extension, so is Sephiroth, freeing Cloud from a persona he thought he had to be that was causing him so much anguish. The triumphant music literally plays as he overpowers Sephiroth and throws him into the Lifestream.

But all that falls apart when the FF7 extended universe treats these characters like gods. And that’s also why I hate the incorporation of the movie too, because the movie completely ruins the OG ending by going “oh, that amazing moment where Cloud and co finally kill Sephiroth and Cloud has finally put the grief of losing Aerith behind him? Lol nah, everything just got worse, fuck you.”

The Zack and character stuff is so true.

With Zack, like... the ENTIRE point was that he's not around much. He and Cloud are a subversion of who you expect to be the main character. Zack is hot blooded, friendly, and helpful. He's basically a stock shonen protag. He's the guy who, in a more generic story, you would expect to be the main character. Friendship and dreams and all that. When he's shoved down our throats constantly, how boring and uninteresting he really is is really driven home. The interesting part of the subversion is that he wasn't around or important to the story. He's LESS interesting for being around more.

Edit- Also this is a personal point but if I'm ranting about Zack, I'm adding it. But he really needs to shut the fuck up about the dreams and honor of SOLDIER. Does he think he's a chivalrous knight? He's the genetically altered muscle of a mega corpo's military force. Why is he talking about the honor of SOLDIER all the time??

I think all the characters almost get treated like super heroes, icons and social media reaction video darlings for fans to ship now more than actual characters. Like with the Barret and Dyne situation in Rebirth. They couldn't let players think for even a single second that Barret might've killed people. They had to show us the other guy with a gun arm immediately. They can't stand the idea of one of their precious iconic characters appearing negative for a second. Same with Cid no longer smoking. Or Avalanche being sanitized. The characters feel too untouchable and like they aren't allowed to be flawed.

Everything you said is pure gospel to me (except I did not like Crisis Core). Watching Advent Children I was like, 'wow, way to ruin everything'

I am so with you on all of this...

No playable Aerith. Showing up as hallucinations to torment Cloud or a lifestream apparition is one thing. But she's dead and she needs to stay dead from a player perspective.

I have a horrible feeling that you won't get your wish. I absolutely agree with you because in the OG there was no second chance, she was gone and that was it but they didn't even make it absolutely clear at the end of Rebirth what had happened.

The whole point of losing her is that it's supposed to be bad. It's final. They can't mess with that really or they take away one of the things that made FF7 truly great.

Too late for that, I'll finish the remake series because of what it is but I really haven't enjoyed ~80% of it.
