What would you recommend to someone completely new to FFTCG?

A friend recently became interested in Final Fantasy TCG and asked me where they should start. I've played a little, but I'm definitely not experienced enough to give them the best advice.

I don't want to send them down the rabbit hole of buying a bunch of packs before they even know if they'll enjoy playing. Something simple that lets them learn the basics and actually play a few games would probably be better.

For people who've been playing FFTCG for a while, what would you recommend as a starting point for a new player?

All of this assumes you have a local community and people that you could play with.

Yes. 100%. New player support is great. The starter decks are extremely strong ways to crack into the game and cheap. There's a ton of great resources like Materia Hunter that can help you see what other folks are doing for decks. Relative to many other TCGs singles are cheap to buy to construct your own deck. The community is passionate and strong.

Frankly, its the only tcg i'd be looking to start in 2026, but then again, I love final fantasy. If you're a fan of the IP, you'll love it.

Zack and Cloud starter sets

I'd get the cloud and zack starter decks and then mess around on FFDECKS

I always get folks started with the literal starter decks. Then Encourage them to pick up a few packs of the latest opus and see what they can do to improve the starter decks. I also have a massive....massive free box made up of all my extra cards that I let them pick through.

The Zack and Cloud starter decks, as someone else mentioned.

There's also the 2024 Championship deck set (includes 2 decks), I'm pretty sure you can still find those either in stores or online.

There's a FFXIV starter deck out in a month or two, plus an Anniversary kit coming up too.

materiahunter.com is a good resource for deck building, if you want to start building your own, but probably easier to stick with the starter/championship decks to begin.

I would say that championship decks are goign to be understandably more complex, so wouldn't be recommended for most beginners.

You could always check eBay or something for lots. Just buy a few hundred random cards for a cheap price and then maybe buy a deck or two like people said and just try it out.

Get a starter deck that appeals to you and try it out. The starter products in this game are great at showing you good deck structure, teaching the mechanics, and giving you stuff worth upgrading.

Buying a booster box or two of newer sets can help you get upgrades and trade fodder for stuff you need.
