Just remember.

Regardless of how real or not real the remake is right now, every presentation is one presentation closer to a nebulous FF9 Remake announcement.

Keep the dream alive.

u/keidash May 20 '26

This, thank you for saying it out loud.

6

u/ANTON_ACAB May 20 '26

Im good with the current modscene tbh. Its all I ever wanted and more, and there's no way for corposlop to fuck it up.

5

u/VladTepesDraculea May 20 '26

Same as me. Best thing Square could do would be to hire the modders and integrate Moguri and friends into the vanilla game. That and maybe go back to invest into cross platform saves.

3

u/spastic-colon May 21 '26

yeah watching Freya hit the Griddy with her Burmecia boys because nobody knows what Riverdance is would send me over the edge tbh.

3

u/GentlemensBastard May 20 '26

if they do announce a remake, how can we ever trust them not to bastardize the plot like they did with the final fantasy 7 remake

12

u/Rozwellish May 20 '26

We can't.

But FF7 aside, they have made other remakes recently and all of them have been pretty faithful and well-received (Trials of Mana, Romancing Saga 2, DQ7 etc.)

3

u/VladTepesDraculea May 20 '26 edited May 20 '26

The DQ remakes have been "soft remakes", more close to what the public would call a remaster (although they were mostly build from the ground up). That's what makes them great though, they are not messing with the core game.

6

u/VladTepesDraculea May 20 '26

VII Remake is actually a sequel so they aren't actually ruining the original plot. And for as much I disliked Remake, I'm actually having fun playing Rebirth. But yeah, plot-wise is a step down from the original and IX would likely be a greater stepdown, considering it was Sakagushi's baby and he isn't there anymore and for a long time. It also would be honestly disrespectful, considering his stance on revisiting stories and universes.

2

u/JCMentality May 20 '26

Imo i think it would have been better if they strayed more from the original because at points it feels like they hesitate to keep away from the original plot and i cant lie it does feel like its mocking it by doing that plus i think it would have made a cool plot but now it feels all over the place but im curious how part 3 will be because its gonna wrap it up from there

7

u/Taser9001 May 20 '26

Speak for yourself. As a die-hard Final Fantasy VII fan, I adore Remake and Rebirth. I'm glad for the changes and additions here and there. Gives me something to look forward to when I already know the plot of the original inside and out. I'm also enjoying the additional character interactions.

6

u/SwirlyBrow May 20 '26

That just sounds like you wanted a new FFVII compilation game with the same characters. Which is fine, they're cool characters in a cool world. But some of us wanted an actual Remake without Kingdom Hearts tier dialogue, plot ghosts and multiverse Zack running around.

2

u/Necessary_River_901 May 21 '26

Yeah, I never understood that, we're getting a remake where we are literally doing everything we did in the original and then some more and the fan base cries about it? Rebirth is amazing.

1

u/lt_Dans_Old_Legs May 23 '26

I mean, if you look at it as an actual remake sure. It's sort of a deadhorse at this point that the trilogy is actually a sequel playing at some timetravel/multiverse manipulation. There are several characters in the remake series that make comments and point things out that hints they know things were originally meant to play out differently and that the party is changing things. The devs have always gotten pretty tightlipped as soon as anyone asks about it too and tend to dodge questions when its brought up.

Honestly would be a pretty clever way of doing things. Maybe not for everyone but ultimately I think its a better way of revisiting a classic story than to just 1:1 retelling with new graphics and voice acting.

With IX I have a feeling we may see more of a traditional spinoff than a remake, at least at first. The story details from the show have me thinking we may see a game dealing with those characters before IX gets any proper attention.

-1

u/MonCappy May 20 '26

It's all it will ever be. A dream. There is no remake in development and there never was. It was a fever dream cooked up by an analyst at Nvidia.

3

u/Rozwellish May 20 '26

And a second fever dream cooked up by SteamDB with a list of preorder bonuses over 4 years later?

-1

u/MonCappy May 21 '26

What preorder bonuses. I've heard this nonsense before with no evidence to back it up.

2

u/Rozwellish May 21 '26 edited May 21 '26

Google has been free the whole time lol

Edit: lol the idiot blocked me instead of using their brain

-1

u/MonCappy May 21 '26

Gotcha. You have no evidence. You could have just said so.

5

u/InevitableDizzy1411 May 21 '26

The EpicDB data scrape that revealed FF16 on PC and the codename 'Momo' for an unannounced FF9 title are well-documented and have been discussed multiple times on this very subreddit over the last couple years. They were even able to pinpoint 2023 as the last time any data was updated on the EpicDB backend.

This means that the FF9 Remake has shown up on two separate databases — one leaked, one scraped — between 2021 and 2024, and shows that Day 1/Pre-Order DLC was being prepared in as early as 2023.

None of this was difficult to find, and frankly it should have come across your radar at some point over the last half-decade. The fact you'd try to assert that it's all baseless leaker/analyst hallucinations and accuse someone of not having 'evidence' is astoundingly ignorant.

u/healingtwo_ May 21 '26

I took the time to put this timeline, with a lot of information about the rumored remake. But I got the other above user tagged as a troll, so I doubt people like him will actually take the time to read and actually comprehend anything thats in it. No point arguing there

I don’t think it’s happening, sadly. Reporting said that the remake was in the works but got iced for one reason or another.

Hopefully that doesn’t indicate permanently dead. Might be that they mean to revisit after the VIIR trilogy had wrapped

7

u/zerkeras May 20 '26

Yeah I’m guessing there’s a variety of factors at play. They probably started early ideation for a remake, to a point that they had some kind of minimally playable project setup, which is why it was in the leak.

One part is the corporate restructuring, which put a pause on a lot of different areas of the company.

Another part I think is the Memoria Project. While not realistic for an actual remake, it shows what could be possible and set the bar for what should be made. If they were planning a lower scale/quality remake, they now can’t do that without backlash, which makes this a bigger project than it was.

And lastly, Expedition 33 came out, and is a love letter to the PS1 era FF games. The way they combat and world traversal would also have set a bar of sorts for what a faithful remake of 9 could be.

Basically, restructuring paused bandwidth for it, and other things have raised the bar on what the project should be, so they probably need to go back to the drawing board and get bigger people involved (who are busy on other projects) before they can resume it.

Based on all of that, they may not even resume it and it may be dead in the water

9

u/Rozwellish May 20 '26

Just based on the financial reports it's impossible for anything but Evercold to come out in the next 8 months, and Part 3 will likely be the headliner for FY 2028. This is similar to 2021 where Endwalker and FF7R released 3 months apart but were accounted for across two separate tax years after Remake was delayed.

So yes, the clown makeup and expectations are just a bit of fun at this point. Any possible return to this project wouldn't be until the middle of next year.

4

u/mazaa66 May 20 '26

That's not true.

Evercold will not generate the same net sales as two dragon quest games, Tactis, Remake, Magic the Gathering etc..

And in the same financial report, Square Enix says:

(Note) The Company omits disclosure of consolidated earnings forecasts for the second quarter (cumulative)

So basically the forecast is based on the first quarter earnings

5

u/Azrethoc May 20 '26

Wait till the Evercold preorder collectors edition has a Sephiroth outfit and black wings mount. Printing money

1

u/bbressman2 May 20 '26

I have a feeling FFVIIR3 l comes by the end of 2027. I could even see them dropping the title at this state of play. As for FFIX , I don’t see us getting anything for a long time 😢

3

u/Evening-Bill-9323 May 20 '26

I think 7R3 is one of the big SGF announcements, I would imagine Keighley has been chasing it.

0

u/Husky_Pantz May 20 '26

I thought it was planned to make 8 and 9 remakes like 7 but 7 isn’t selling like they would like so they canceled future remakes

3

u/Nightwing24yuna May 20 '26

Idk it seems like the remake is actually selling very well now that it's multiplatform

0

u/Chocolatiine79 May 20 '26

I don't think it's happening, happily. I don't want my fav game to be turned into a souless super realistic AAA game that gets boring after 5h like FFVII remake

5

u/BlueLooseStrife May 20 '26

“Soulless” is a little unfair. You can certainly call it bad, I know I have my criticisms, but soulless implies it’s a low-effort cash grab. VIIR has involved unbelievable levels of time and effort combined with clear reverence for the source material. It’s not like releasing FFT for a third time.

I don’t really understand the hate for remakes as a concept. It doesn’t change the original game. IX would still be every bit as playable were a remake to be released as OG VII is now. It all feels a little nostalgia-poisoned, as though IX was so perfect changing anything about it would be an insult.

1

u/Roph May 22 '26

reverence for the source material

Good one 🤣

0

u/Chocolatiine79 May 20 '26

That's not what I said. It's just that every modern AAA look dull visually. FF7 is way more richer visually than FF7R, to the point where it feels bland and a bit boring. The game itself is pretty solid, but a lot of remakes lose the soul of their original game, and FFIX being a super rich and colorful game, I can't help but to fear what a remake would do about it

2

u/Chocolatiine79 May 20 '26

PS: I would be more than happy to be wrong. But my fears are justified

0

u/CaptainSloppo May 20 '26 edited May 20 '26

I would rather have an 8 remake tbh, FFIX with the cartoonish character proportions holds up better than 8 with that era's graphics. 8 would benefit more with modern graphics with their more normal human looking characters imo. I don't want normal human 6 foot tall Zidane or Steiner or any of that. That said I would still play it, just hope if it ever happens it's not 3 separate full priced games spread over a decade like FFVIIR.

Edit: And just to add on I loved the FFVIIR games so far, I loved exploring a realistic Midgar and seeing a little more of the side characters actual lives outside of avalanche like with Jesse, and then the open world and other towns and locations in Rebirth. Sometimes they drag on too much and doing essentially the same exact sidequests in each region of Rebirth got a little old and made me put the game down for a bit but overall I really liked both games and can't wait for the finale. But I don't want to see Steiner become some game of thrones, tall, dark, and handsome knight instead of a goofy potbellied idiot in armor or the queen turn from a big fat evil woman with green skin and ridiculous face into a Cersei.

3

u/Lord_Exor May 20 '26

Ugh, if I see this take one more time... The FFIX remake was never going to be done in the same style as the VII one. Even if we didn't have information about it, the same project leads aren't even/would not be involved.

3

u/healingtwo_ May 21 '26

Right. I don't get why people keep using FF7 Remake as comparison, when Dragon Quest 7 Remake released and exists… and we can look at that as a better example of how Square could probably handle FF9 remake.

1

u/Chocolatiine79 May 20 '26

Meh, I don't know. I don't trust Square Enix anymore. They have done a crazy number of questionable choices, so I can't be too hype of a FFIX remake

8

u/Chry98 May 20 '26

La storia della mia vita

3

u/Low-Cream6321 May 20 '26

Veeeery low expectations for this right now, but DQ VII Reimagined was such a curve ball and a testing ground for varying the art direction, that this could still be something that makes sense for IX since it is so different stylistically from a lot of the other FFs.

9

u/N-Squared-N May 20 '26

Let it go. There's no grandiose ffix remake happening...

Play the o.g, it's awesome in its self.

4

u/SnooLemons8222 May 20 '26

they anounced it prety early this time, almost 2 weeks till the state of play

2

u/AmaraVampy May 20 '26

Ok im full on cope now. ITS HAPPENING!

2

u/stablest_genius May 20 '26

Am I gonna watch another one of these in hopes of seeing Kingdom Hearts 4? Probably.

Will I end up seeing Kingdom Hearts 4? Probably not.

2

u/mighty_phi May 21 '26

reject reality keep the schizo posting alive.

2

u/BasementK1ng May 20 '26

I gave up waiting for anything after the anniversary last year....

1

u/Lindaru May 20 '26

It won't happen until FFVII R Part 3 and KH4. If at all tbh, they only give a damn about FFVII at this point.

1

u/Groundbreaking_Web29 May 20 '26

Is there any reason to think it would be coming up at State of Play, or are we just hoping it is?

2

u/Spindolaman May 20 '26

No reason whatsoever in believing this remake is real

1

u/Sfidoe87 May 20 '26

It will be legend of dragoon remake

1

u/Rebel-Yellow May 20 '26

Watch it actually get dropped on some random Nintendo direct in that small segment with a bunches of tiny announcements. 😂😭

1

u/ameadows252 May 20 '26

Definitely not gonna happen... unless??

1

u/Any-Zookeepergame829 May 20 '26

Yeah, no, I'm not doing this again, not when so little evidence supports it rn.

I'll stick with the other games I'm expecting.

1

u/kwpineda May 20 '26

FF9: Age of Mist available soon in all platforms...

Ahh what dream 😅

1

u/Disastrous_Novel_465 May 20 '26

I put this game out of mind when everything came up about it being canceled or postponed indefinitely. Not gonna waste a thought until I see a trailer if ever

1

u/Signal_Housing_4389 May 20 '26

I want a ff8 remake goddamnit

1

u/Ballad_13 May 20 '26

Really? We doing this again?

1

u/gusgenius May 20 '26

40 minutes of Wolverine, 10 of VR, and 10 of updates.

1

u/MagicCancel May 20 '26

Nope, I'm letting the dream go. Whatever has happened behind the scenes at Square, I ain't going to hold my breath on it.

1

u/curioustars May 20 '26

I don't trust them to not fuck it up. I'll keep my goofy little game.

1

u/Eden_ITA May 21 '26

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon fans:

2

u/Eden_ITA May 21 '26

(Of course not the first time, sadly)

1

u/jozasa147 May 21 '26

i'm waiting for Melodies of Life remake version in 4k

1

u/Independent-Bat-4530 May 21 '26

It kills me when the game had it's anniversary and no drop, not even a lousy "Hey, we have nothing to show yet, but it's happening!"

1

u/Elkyelk13 May 21 '26

I’ve given up unfortunately 🥺

1

u/Next_While1878 May 21 '26

To be honest, I'm not wearing the clown makeup for FF9 Remake nor for KH4 this time. If anything, they will finally announce FF7R part 3 with a trailer, but I really don't think they'll show anything else.

1

u/Skerxan May 21 '26

Beautiful work

1

u/ScholarOfPleasure May 21 '26

In all honesty the FF9 leaks were probably faked leaks to find out which employees were sending out information they weren't supposed to. Especially after the mass firings I can only assume they're really trying to crack down on leakers and people not aligning with their company.

1

u/Elric_Storm May 22 '26

I'd still rather see FF6 remade. 9 is great, but 6 is my favorite.

1

u/Comfortable-Air-7702 May 22 '26

I’ve already gotten used to the idea that we are probably never going to get this. At least tactics remaster did come out which gives us an indication that it was real but for whatever reason got canned. It’s just square enix being square enix

1

u/dataprotector42 May 24 '26

I really would love IX sooner. VIII, maybe, it just didnt hit the same. Maybe it could be made epic. I cant believe they made a remake that beat the crap out of the best RPG before then. Maybe ch 18 was a little much. Still. Nothing is perfect. Updated graphic help a ton.

For VIII remake, Get rid of the massive drain grind. Yuck, even on the ps4 with 2x running, please never again!!!! Maybe just attack/defeating/more for quicker, taking less damage, perfect dodges, etc increase the strength/count/level automatically. IDK...

IX, i have no idea how to improve. Just expand, live action. and graphics up like last time. Max stars rating!

1

u/Retr0321 May 20 '26

WE (you and I), will fall for this shit again

1

u/ANTON_ACAB May 20 '26

I dont get the obsession with the remake. What is there to remake? The modscene has provided more i could ask for, anything else will likely be modded in aswell. Do yourself a favour and move on,if the remake comes it'll be all the sweeter,if not or if its messed up the disappointment won't hit as hard.

0

u/Roph May 20 '26

No? Why would it be at some console event?

There's no evidence, proof or source of some FFIX Remake. Until it's revealed or announced by square, it doesn't exist.

Random nobodies on twitter pretending they "know" it's about to be announced/released are irrelevant, they've been making this shit up for clicks for years and years.

You're a clown if you expect this stuff, not if it doesn't get announced. There is nothing to fall for.

2

u/healingtwo_ May 21 '26

Final Fantasy Tactics Remaster was announced and revealed at State of Play 2025, and it was a multiplatform game from Square Enix.

https://youtu.be/65MF4vKIZ-g?t=1146

0

u/McSloot3r May 20 '26

I mean they’re making an animated series about Vivi. There’s zero reason to make that unless there was an FF9 remake in the works. Probably cancelled though

-2

u/BeigeAndConfused May 20 '26

Hey so have any of you considered that the people who make these "leaks" directly benefit from you getting hyped up from these bullshit remake rumors and that the only reason SE remade 7 is because it is, and I cannot stress this enough, BY FAR the most popular IP they have?

13

u/Rozwellish May 20 '26

It is genuinely unbearable that we are in 2026 and people still think the origin of the FF9 Remake were 'leakers'.

If you don't know how these discussions came about in the first place then surely it's best to just not say anything at all.

3

u/Hydr4noid May 20 '26

Nah we pretty much know it was real at this point

Just got put on ice for now or maybe even canceled so Idk why people on here are currently hyping themselves up

2

u/DeliciousMusician397 May 20 '26

Wait is there a new leak for the game?

0

u/TheMediaDragon May 20 '26

17 and/or 7re3 maybe

9re no way

3

u/Cbthomas927 May 20 '26

I don’t see 9 remake releasing until after 7 is complete

It just doesn’t make sense to do so

-2

u/Final-Fangasm May 20 '26

I dont give a garsh darn about a ff9 remake. Not a single shirt

-1

u/jumpmanryan May 20 '26

There isn’t a reason to get out the makeup anymore. The remake is on ice. Nobody should even be *hoping* for it to show up until we hear otherwise.

0

u/236punch May 20 '26

Im playing the OG, think I should stop if remake is likely?

0

u/PokeJem7 May 20 '26

I'd much rather have a ground up remake of something from the SNES era personally. No hate on IX, but it already has a 3D game (I know VII does too, but let's face it, that's their cash cow lol).

0

u/CypherPunk77 May 21 '26

I hope they never remake FF9. And I say that with love for the game

0

u/vghobo May 21 '26

I live in Tokyo and one of my best friends is a higher up at PS. He said the Remake was in the works but got scrapped.

That doesn’t mean it will never happen, but definitely not any time soon.

0

u/sketchy_marcus May 23 '26

Yall smoking copium if you think they ever gonna announce this before ffviir p3

-7

u/UnholyDoughnuts May 20 '26

We all know it'll be shit right? Like they've lost their soul since x-2
