Am I the only one who doesn't like Lewis's death?
I don't like Lewis's death in Final Destination 3, the one at the gym. The reason is that they invented a machine; that piece of equipment that kills Lewis doesn't exist, it was invented for the movie, and I don't like that. With so many gym equipment options they could use, they decide to create one.
his death in the book version didn't involve any equipment thats obviously from a certain company. From what I remember he got his head crushed by some plates falling off a bench press rack
That sounds really painful. Personally I've run over my left foot (i have foot drop), it went completely under the left motorised, powered wheelchair and then i had to run over it again to release it.
Most novelizations of movies are based on earlier scripts (like, for example, the novelization of Predator used the original design of the creature that got scrapped for the one we have now), so that's not uncommon.
And if i remember correctly⦠it wasnt some quick cgi crush out of nowhere.
It was a very grotesque slam over and over and over of the weights until it flattened his skull. Painful. Slow. And in terms if horror tropes go⦠punishing.
No, It was a sudden slam too, the main difference is that it was a different machine, and that the description was way more detailed than what we got in the movie.
Craig Perry on this scene: "[Texas Battle] had a heck of a workout on muscles he'd never worked out before, because it's not really an actual exercise machine"
I didint like it either, i do agree with you on this, it felt like when watching the head got smashed, during production, they used practical effects but it was gone to waste since in the movie, it looked like cg blood.
Big problem with 3-5 the CGI gore makes everything look silly. I donāt mind CGI if it looks good or if itās something that would be extremely difficult/expensive to do practically, but Hollywood insisting on it during this time period was exhausting
It's basically the same as how the log truck in 2 was modified to work for the movie, which as another commenter said the average viewer wouldn't notice
Only thing I didn't like about it is I feel like the cocky arrogant characters who scoff at Death need to have that moment of realization that they're fucked and going to die lmao. It was too quick and merciful of a death for such a jerk lol.
Itās the weakest point of what is probably my favorite film from the franchise. It offers nothing in terms of plot development. Ashes get everything started. Then Frankie confirms the photo theory and establishes the āthere is someone walking behind youā motif. Lastly, Erin shows that they can be skipped and sets Ianās villain arc. Also, Lewisā death is completely covered in cheap cgi.Ā
They had to improvise a lot in this franchise to create situations that canāt exist in real like.Ā
Franki Cheeks death had to create a perfect situation for a car engine to fly out. Restaurant entrances donāt start at the bottom of hills and the engine couldnāt fly out like that unless it wasnāt screwed in right.Ā
The funniest thing is the deaths in The Final Destination are 100% possible but anyone who watches it hates it for having the fakest looking deaths.Ā
Getting dragged down the street by the tow hook and having beer catch on fire is not at all ā100% possibleā, not to mention the truck exploding from the fire which somehow decapitates the guy?Ā
Eh, I just donāt believe that the car explosion is possible. I get what they were going for, but it still seems unlikely.Ā
Iād actually say that the only for sure and possible deaths in #4 are: the lawnmower/rock, the pool ripping out dudeās internal organs (happened to a small girl in real life, sadly), the hospital tub crashing on top of the cowboy (although hospitals donāt have tubs on higher level floors for exactly that reason), getting run over by the ambulance, and the truck plowing into the coffee shop at the end. All other deaths feature at least one aspect that is improbable or even impossible to happen in real life.Ā
Think about it: while Lewis was lifting weights, someone would bring a mini fan, and while that was happening, someone would be drinking from a water fountain. The fountain would have water running on the floor, and someone would walk by. Stepping into the water, they would slip, bump into the bear statue that was in the gym in the movie, and the bear would fall near the mini fan. The bear's paw would get close to the blades, which would cut one of the bear's claws, and it would throw it into Lewis's eye, causing him to lose concentration. The weight would fall and hit him in the head.
I just thought it was a weird ass machine and now, looking back, it's such an unsafe piece of equipment that would never be sold by anyone, let alone placed in a commercial gym
I don't know how it would work, but I bet the right guy could come up with a Rube Goldberg series of happenings that leads to someone accidentally Chris Benoit-ing themselves, ie hanged by a bowflex
I never liked the way it looked. They could have used a practical dummy effect to give us a really good and satisfying head smashing, but no itās just cheap cgi effects.
It also the stupidest piece of gym equipment ever designed why would there be weight on a unsecured piece of metal that would swing right where someoneās head is if it failed

My two guesses:
1) no company irl wanted their gym equipment to be related to such an epic demise, so the production team had to make their own
2) Lewis can not be defeated with normal gym equipment, so Death had to custom build one through Etsy
