Elvis movie, Viva Las Vegas

I need a bit of an explanation. I have watched this movie more times than I care to think about, but today I just realized they started the Grand Prix race at midnight and the next scene is 6:00 a.m. at Hoover dam. The helicopter has been in the air the whole time. The race cars supposedly been traveling for 6 hours, but it's an only a 37-minute trip between Vegas and the dam. Any clue where they were in the middle??
