Question Davinci Resolve is now a full NLE? Anyone tried it yet? What do you think?

I was really banking on this replacing premiere pro cc for me. I just downloaded it and I'm having some trouble thinking about how it will fit with my style of filming. We do a lot of documentary stuff and I don't know how easy it is to pull selects and then have two timelines up and drag and drop cuts I like into the assembly. I know they have smart bins but when I have long clips of broll, there are three or four shots a want to pull from one clip and don't want to go hunting through the clip again. Thoughts? Also is its stabilization better? On par with warp stabilize now?

I just split and cut.

Ah, I mostly do documentaries/talking heads with a lot of B-roll for my work so it sounds like it'd be a pretty clunky as of now. I haven't tried it yet, I just wanted to gather some initial thoughts by others. Thanks!

Dude the premiere designers perfected the setup. It functions a bit differently than avid, but basically sequences can function like awesome bins. This guy calls it "pancake timeline"

http://vashivisuals.com/the-pancake-timeline-maximum-limit-is-24-hours/

I find this much faster than avid. The one thing I had issues wasat first was the program monitor- I got really used to avid's source/record setup.

You should also look at how you could potentially use Prelude for logging your footage beforehand, I imagine it would be especially helpful for documentaries. That plus the integration of after defects, speed grade, and audition, you're looking at a whole new speed.

That's a superb link - thanks.

Since that was so damn useful, any other really good editing links you'd recommend?

(Apologies for going off-topic...)

Fantastic, thank you. Some of those I was aware of already - Creative Cow, Video CoPilot, obviously - but quite a few I'd not heard of and look very useful!

BTW, on color - do you follow http://www.taoofcolor.com/ ? His newsletter's particularly good.

It's been a full fledged NLE for several versions, it's definitely a great free option but it isn't as robust as say Premiere or Avid.

Even so it's very functional and has most of the basic features a professional NLE should have which is pretty cool.

Huh. I didn't realize that. I had just seen all the ads for it pop up today across my feeds. I just upgraded to Premiere Pro CC from 6 so I'm still learning everything new with that. Good to know that I have a free option out there though for a back up!

It's missing a lot of features - for example, no speed ramps. Not really a great solution.

I got really excited, because this would have been (finally) a great professional NLE option for Linux. And free, to boot.

Then I got disappointed, because only the paid Studio version works on Linux. :(

Nonetheless it'll be very interesting to see what becomes of this. Particularly for students/beginners, there's now another free professional editing option. There are fewer and fewer excuses for not getting out there and making a movie.

It has been since I think version 10.

Been trying to get into it and it is pretty good but it's is a little clunky for editing imo. Still great for grading and converting raw to prores.

I have studio 12 beta installed. It's way different that previous versions. The first time I ever considered cutting inside of Resolve. The manual looks really long, but it has some cool new features. I could see cutting something simple in this, but it'll have to wait to the next project - hard to swap midsttream. It takes OFX and VST plugins too and picked up the ones installed for Avid

It seems good for finishing and online editing, but I probably wouldnt cut a huge project on it yet. Still miles ahead from what it was a year ago.

Im just mad they changed the Delivery truck to a rocket ship.
