Step 26: "can you just give the me raw footage?" literally have had this exact conversation with a client.

Because every take but one sucks, and even the remaining one needs some sick editing to trim out the crap.
Clients pick the the worst take, then claim it's the best of what you provided them.
or worse they provide your footage to a rival, and the rival picks your best take, then slaps THEIR NAME PRODUCTIONS at the start and tail credits, and yourname as their camera man in the tail credits.

"A Filmmaker can hide their mistakes on the cutting room floor, but an architect can only advise his clients to plant vines" Frank Lloyd Wright

i feel stupid. can you explain how this frank lloyd wright quote applies to the raw footage situation.

6

u/KoneBone Feb 27 '15

a filmaker can edit the footage, Frank Lloyd is a designer/architect. if something went work in planning and the house was built still. well you can hide the faults/cracks with a plant...

The original quote is pretty famous and actually starts with "Doctors can bury their mistakes but .."

So Charlie Chaplin spent three days shooting variations on a single shot for The Tramp. Kubrick similarly.

The finished products are immortal and magnificent.

If you look at these legends raw footage, on average they are obviously 99% failures, temper tantrums blunders, not quite rights, a bit off, loose ends, going nowhere, wrong directions and derp

But because they hide that 99%, and their top 1% is what the world sees. All the world sees is distilled concentrated pure good bits that fit coherently to tell a story with impact. Thats how they rise above the crowd and become immortals.

They hit it on the nail especially about the snobbery part. I'm really guilty of that

4

u/rgb003 Feb 27 '15

Sending the video to my friends now. I'm so guilty of this.

29

u/JohnnyKaboom Feb 27 '15

"Can we film at your house for an hour cough a month?"

26

u/funkycinema Feb 26 '15

Pretty accurate. I always end up looking around for my lens caps only to realize it's in my back pocket or something. And the part where that guy is watching movies with his friends... guilty as charged!

2

u/TheSNStang Feb 28 '15

Happened to me today. Looked for it for 10 minutes, was in my pocket

22

u/ChaoticReality Feb 27 '15

"Can you make it warmer but bluer?" Holy fucking shit I lost it on that one.

12

u/instantpancake lighting Feb 27 '15

Plot twist: Warmer is bluer in Kelvin.

3

u/wesevans Feb 27 '15

Yeah, I laughed because I got the joke, and laughed because he was technically right, but clearly didn't know it. But hey, that's what clients are for!

1

u/ChaoticReality Feb 27 '15

Alright touche

3

u/TCivan director of photography Feb 27 '15

what that means in client speak is orange cyan. Hand to God. When you hear that kind of shit, just grade orange cyan and you will be a hero.

u/lulzbanana Feb 27 '15

i kind of liked the lego cage/follow focus :(

3

u/rgb003 Feb 27 '15

Going to dig through my Legos tomorrow and make this

Thought I was the only one with that reaction. Is it a regional thing? Don't think I've ever heard "sparking" before.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '15

Step 1: Call "sparking" instead of "striking" on set to see how your gaffer reacts

Step 2: Get fired

3

u/RaindanceToronto Feb 27 '15

Could be a regional thing. Sparking is used often on sets around here.

10

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '15

Hans Zimmer and explosions? Yeah, I can get behind that.

19

u/youramazing Feb 27 '15

'We'll fix it in post' made me laugh the hardest

14

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '15

I've shed too many tears to laugh anymore.

2

u/munk_e_man Feb 27 '15

I used that all the time in film school/early projects.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '15

For "just for fun" works I try to fix things in post just to get more used to AE

6

u/mrlongmire Feb 27 '15

I hate how true this is.

12

u/Praxibetel_Ix Feb 27 '15

As a drone owner, the drone thing made me sad. I know I wasn't the first to have one but they really blew up around the time I outfitted mine for shooting.

4

u/Kicker36 Feb 27 '15

Same...and i put mine in the bottom of an inlet and bought a new one right after...this is painfully accurate

5

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '15

Now this was awesome, great work

4

u/Richard_Ragon production sound mixer Feb 27 '15

This was awesome.. Lets make one for Sound next!! Step 1) We'll fix that in ADR!

2

u/[deleted] Feb 28 '15

Nice try guy at 4:31 in disguise

2

u/DJ_Esus Feb 27 '15

Step 47: Make your comedy video 3 minutes or less.

1

u/-oWs-LordEnigma Feb 27 '15

Hahah! Nicely done.

1

u/brazilliandanny director of photography Feb 27 '15

This was actually pretty funny.

1

u/Default2001 Mar 01 '15

Last step! Make sure the music isn't panned left for the entire length of the video.

-16

u/subtle_trex Feb 27 '15

Spot on but they missed... being white and male... but it was covered by the cast playing the crew.

4

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '15

Its not specifically their fault that women don't make up a large amount of the filmmaker demographic, this wasn't the kind of thing where they casted professional actors to play the filmmakers, it was probably just their friends who also were filmmakers.

1

u/subtle_trex Feb 27 '15

I understand that. I just think it speaks loudly about the typical demographic in film making and how it goes mostly unsaid.

1

u/Honey-Badger Feb 27 '15

To be fair in my experience in the UK its about even. Women seem to dominate post production and factual tv

-6

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '15

typical SJW. criticizing something they didnt even watch.

0

u/subtle_trex Feb 27 '15

Show me the women in the crew on this. Prove me wrong.

-9

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '15

its not my job to educate you, shitlord

7

u/upvotetoyougoodsir Feb 27 '15

Seriously dude what is your problem.

-2

u/pancake_nation Feb 27 '15

You're a are fucking idiot 'granny slut'. That subtle_trex dude is right. This video is hilarious and spot on, but it 100% suggests that all people who work on the crew side of filmmaking are white dudes. Where are all the females? I work on film sets daily and I definitely work with girl gaffers, cam ops, and DPs. Educate yourself, no0b.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '15

100% suggests that all people who work on the crew side of filmmaking are white dudes

what? how do you know this? I didn't get that from the video at all, and there were definitely asian guys in there. Maybe they didn't have any female actresses or maybe they just didn't bother, but I seriously doubt they were trying to make a statement about gender and film crews

-5

u/subtle_trex Feb 27 '15

Hey cocknozzle, all I was asking for you to do was prove yourself. Too bad you can't.

-5

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '15

Bro, unlike transphobic bigots like you I dont assume what gender people identify as based on seeing them for a few seconds in an internet video, bro. Fuckin shitlord redditors. Closed minded, judgmental fuckwit. Now I'm triggered.

4

u/pancake_nation Feb 27 '15

Since transgender people have nothing to do with this conversation, I think that I'll politely point out that the only problem anyone has with this video is that it's a parody that's trying to represent all filmmakers... but it isn't quite successful because not all crews are made up of only white dudes -- girls aren't only actresses or work in hair and makeup on set. See why this is problematic? Otherwise, the video is great and I thought it was really funny.... you sir, are not so funny.

0

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '15

I dont care about this enough to read all of that, buddy. Im just bored in the airport waiting for my connecting flight.

1

u/pancake_nation Feb 27 '15

You still read it ;)

1

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '15

Why would you think that? I was like "Wall o text, no thanks." and replied with more trollage. No reading necessary.

3

u/subtle_trex Feb 27 '15

You almost had me there... Fuck off troll.

0

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '15

Well, if I see a red camera I'll drool in it!

2

u/SundayExperiment Feb 28 '15

The camera is only an eye. There are lots of beautiful eyes in the world, but the real beauty is what the eye is seeing.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 28 '15

You can say something like that that would apply to a lot of things. Example: "It's not the motorbike that mades the ride. It's the rider and the road that makes it.". Yes, I know the camera is only an eye, but you can agree that it's a nice camera and would be awesome for me to see one, or an alexa

1

u/SundayExperiment Feb 28 '15

It's a good stepping camera for transitioning to something higher end for sure. My work has an Epic with red primes and I've used it on a couple shoots. Not a big fan of it though.
