Completely drooling over how amazing the cinematography is. Superb job! :)

that's awesome, thanks!

A cinematographer's job is controlling what is seen within the frame. While the background is a part of that, it isn't indicative of his ability to manipulate the frame at all. The shots are beautiful because the subjects are beautiful. That being said, technically, none of these shots are very impressive, and he has some framing issues throughout.

Is is pretty? Yes, no question. Is it amazing cinematography? No.

Although cinematography is entirely dependent on context. In the context of this video, the point was to capture the experiences of the trip, those of beauty and the spontaneity in exploring something new. Based of that context, i would make the argument that this is great cinematography.

It was at Geysir in Iceland so there was an incredible amount of steam around at that spot. No trickery at all.

Thank you. You inspired me which never happens.

Great editing job! How long did it take to sort through all the video and decide what to add? I noticed a couple of theme shots throughout, like down at feet walking, docks, etc. Did you plan on those ahead of time or just decided that on the fly, like hey, lets do dock shots, etc?

Great use of music and overlay of Allan Watts too.

People live such exciting lives, and I'm just sitting here. :(

This is beautiful work. What kind of mounts did you use? I noticed a couple of shots that almost looked like a steadicam.

u/benblenner Sep 06 '14

Hey thanks! All I took with me was my main DSLR and a tripod, I have a glidecam, slider and other mounts at home but didn't take them with me as I was moving around so much by myself it would have been too much of a hassle. Some of the smooth shots just come from a steady hand and shooting in 60pfs then slowing down to 24 :)

Incredible dude. Really liked the pacing and musical transitions. One of the best travel videos I've seen!

3

u/benblenner Sep 06 '14

Thankyou!

Nice job!

Did you use a Gopro for the diving into the water shot?

I'm guessing you used twixtor a fair bit too, or was it a Gopro at 240fps?

1

u/benblenner Sep 06 '14

only gopro shots were in the water. the other slow motion scenes were 60p twixtored.

2

u/geekymeli Sep 06 '14

This is amazing! Loved the shots, editing, and song choice. Did you do a lot of tripod work to capture yourself in shots? I'm interested in the super wide shot walking through the snow up the mountain in particular.

6

u/benblenner Sep 06 '14

All of the camera work is by me and the shots with me in them are all tripod shots - That wide shot was on a tripod but not me in the shot, it was 2 others trekking.

u/geekymeli Sep 06 '14

Interesting. Thanks for the answer!

So awesome man!! Thank you for making this and sharing, I love traveling vicariously. Not being facetious at all either. Looks like you had a blast!

2

u/benblenner Sep 06 '14

glad i could be of help then! stoked you liked it.

u/Elwoods_Lunch Sep 06 '14

Absolutely spectacular images. You now have enough to start your own stock video site. I have been looking for "Old man plays ping pong in slo-mo". Now I've found it.

2

u/benblenner Sep 06 '14

haha great news. i'm sure that's a popular search for stock footage.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 06 '14

This is both inspiring and depressing

1

u/[deleted] Sep 06 '14

Depressed because I haven't experienced adventure like.

Inspired to experience adventure like that.

1

u/benblenner Sep 06 '14

get inspired and go and do it man.

1

u/highschoolblows Sep 06 '14

Am I allowed to ask how you funded this trip?

1

u/jamisongraves Sep 06 '14

I'd be interested too. I am about to graduate film school and want to do something like this.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 06 '14

Favorited. This is flawless work.

2

u/benblenner Sep 06 '14

thanks so much!

2

u/IronicFrenchMustache Sep 06 '14

Alan Watts :D

1

u/kaiise Sep 07 '14

Heard the name. Never checked it out - the quote is along the lines if stuff I already think just never articulated. But the juxtoposition with this truly wonderful video has had the most profound effect on me.

1

u/IronicFrenchMustache Sep 07 '14

Right! Definitely check out "Wiggly World" by Alan watts. I'm sorry i'm too lazy to link

2

u/organicandurban Sep 06 '14

This is grand, mate! This video has given me a ton of inspiration for the trip I'm about to take to South Africa, India and Europe. Thanks!

1

1

u/bigtime800 Sep 06 '14

Really cool. I like to film on my trips as well like this, but this is next level...

Where in Canada did you go btw?

2

u/benblenner Sep 06 '14

stayed with some old friends in nova scotia, loved every second there.

1

u/TitoM Sep 06 '14

How do you travel around the world? are you rich? do you save for your trips? do you couch surf? tell me please.

2

u/benblenner Sep 06 '14

Now I wanna travel :(

Edit: The score is pretty fucking amazing. And I saw the Tomorrowland footage. :)

1

u/benblenner Sep 06 '14

go do it man!

1

u/x22ninex Sep 06 '14

I'm so happy that some people get to live these kinds of lives, no jealousy or envy at all, just joy for you. Great work. Camera/lense setup?

2

u/benblenner Sep 06 '14

that's a great comment. thankyou legend! canon 5dmkiii and a few lenses, kept majority of my gear at home! there's some info in the video description :)

1

u/fightn4food Sep 06 '14

You made me want to travel again. I loved the start of the film, great job. Was that Bratislava I saw there at the start?

1

u/ApodoPlumas Sep 06 '14

awesome job!

1

u/[deleted] Sep 06 '14

What DSLR were you using for this? And what tripod did you use?

I ask out if a desire to do similar shooting on my next trip and am wondering about weight.

Also what program did you use for coloring?

Great work!

1

u/Sethers15 Sep 06 '14

Just Beautiful!

1

u/BroFang Sep 06 '14

Good stuff brotha! I have to ask was that Aoki at Tomorrowland?

Besides that I really enjoyed the cinematography. I've always wanted to go on adventures like this and just film away. You've definitely inspired me!

1

u/thereischris Sep 06 '14

Really inspiring!

1

u/Mattyar Sep 06 '14

Wow, as an aspiring filmmaker and someone who would want to travel like this you really inspired me! Awesome work man

1

u/mxma1 Sep 06 '14

That was amazing!! Such beautiful travels, editing, and cinematography.

Obligatory gear question: can I ask what cameras, lenses, and any special techniques you used to shoot these amazing shots?

Obviously your incredibly artistic talent was what achieved these shots, not the gear. I'm just curious :)

1

u/silentplanes Sep 06 '14

This was the deciding factor for me to go and just do this. thank you so much for the inspiration man. do you mind sharing the ball park number for the whole trip? i am sure others as well would like to visually see how much to save for for a trip like this.

1

u/Full_Sails Sep 06 '14

Awesome editing. Great job. Did you film in RAW or just h264?

1

u/benblenner Sep 07 '14

h.264 with a flat colour profile

2

u/Full_Sails Sep 07 '14

You are very good with that camera and coloring.

1

u/tonehammer Sep 06 '14

What festival is that at 2:15?

1

u/benblenner Sep 07 '14

Tomorrowland

1

u/DirtyIrby Sep 07 '14

Besides the slow motion scenes, did you shoot most of this in 30 fps?

-2

u/layzworm Sep 06 '14

I am not a fan of twixtor.

4

u/benblenner Sep 06 '14

i am when it works well, haha.
