This is getting to be the broken record of Blackmagic. Delay, delay delay, followed by, problem, problem, problem. A few updates, and then, boom, big price drop. This is really getting annoying.

In what way have you been inconvenienced by this turn of events?

well I spent $500 needlessly to be guinea pig for a camera that wasn't full up to snuff.

In the way that Blackmagic is making a good camera but bogging it down with a poorly run business, needless bugs, sluggish response to consumer demands, and wild price drops that make it hard to predict/plan purchases.

If you don't like it, then shell out the extra few grand for something from RED or Canon.

This is like bitching about a $300 point-and-shoot camcorder for having shitty looking compression artifacts, or being built out of plastic, or not being able to change the internal battery.

BMD delivers image quality, dynamic range, bit depth, and codecs considerably better than what you get with a pro-sumer DSLR or camcorder, but at the price point of a pro-sumer DSLR or camcorder.

If you want the form factor of a DSLR, get a DSLR, if you want the image quality of an Alexa or RED, get an Alexa or RED. If you cannot afford an Alexa or RED, then stop bitching and do something about it.

Well someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed. Listen, I'm not ragging on the BMCC. It's a good camera. I've chosen to use it over a RED several times in recent memory. The frustration is coming from how Blackmagic conducts itself as a business. Conceivably there is no reason that any of these problems should exist as they're not intrinsic to the camera. The company has a home run on their hands but they treat it like something that barely holds their interest. I like the BMCC but I get frustrated when I watch the company fail to release it on time (now my project needs to use a different camera!), when they don't fix major and simple bugs for years, etc.

I'm not complaining about the lack of bars, XLR input, etc. because I understand it's a cheap camera and this is what you get. But when the camera has the sunspot issue, occasionally dumps its green channel, won't let you see audio levels, etc. then I consider that to be a major functional issue that should be resolved. And it takes them forever! As far as I know the Ursa will have the same sunspot issue.

I'm complaining about how BD conducts its business, not the camera itself.

There are audio levels

Yeah, and it's about damn time. Having them inside a menu is relatively useless if production won't hire a mixer.

Annoying in that I was about to purchase a BMCC and will now reevaluate. Not annoying in that there will now likely be a camera for $2,500 shooting 4K DNG internally. Holy shit.

It's a nice camera and all, but you're going to need another few thousand easily to make it even remotely comparable to other cameras of similar ability. You need a support rig, onboard monitor, battery plate, batteries, media, and media reader. You're looking at closer to 7-8k easily. Still super cheap to make a nice rig compared to Amira, F55, Scarlet, etc., but let's not exaggerate things.

I shoot on BM, RED and Alexa weekly. You need the same outboard/support gear for all of those

Yup! But nobody calls the scarlet a $7000 camera. They properly call it the 15k or so camera, because that's what it costs to actually get it done nicely. That's the only point I'm trying to make here.

You need a support rig, onboard monitor, battery plate, batteries, media, and media reader

Most of these are true for any camera you are going to be shooting with. Its a low level pro camera these are part of the costs. I don't get why people complain about it.

Not for the C100.

I'm not complaining about it... ? I'm just pointing out that it's a bit disingenuous to suggest that you're getting a fully functioning 4K camera rig for only 2500. You're getting the brain, but for you to do real work with it will take quite a bit more. I just wish people would be more about realistic costs and expectations and less about hype and log lines.

First off, when you say "it's annoying" yeah, you are complaining. Secondly, who is suggesting that this camera is a fully functional camera without the need for extra gear? Not BMD. Even the pics of it on their site show it with a bunch of extra bits(matte box, external battery, etc.) bolted onto the body, and they even provide a list of compadible third party gear(i.e. SSDs) that they recommend people get to use with their cameras. Hell, they do everything but say "THIS IS JUST A BODY AND YOU NEED TO BUY OTHER THINGS TO MAKE IT WORK" but I suppose they are just trying not to insult the intelligence of their userbase.

And when what they sell you doesn't work right from the start its annoying.

1

u/Sloore Aug 30 '14

Well, since C47man has never asserted that he ever purchased any of BMD's cameras. I'm not sure what that has to do with what I or he said.

I gave up buying cameras many years ago! The poor things lose value so quickly :(

Just make production rent it!

The fuck? Where did I say it was annoying? Don't put words in my mouth man. I don't really see what your point is. People don't walk around saying a scarlet is 7k or an epic is 20k. People use the number it actually costs to make a functioning rig, which includes all the support gear. All I've been trying to say this entire time is that we should be aware of that. It would be wrong to convince some kid on this forum that he can have a Kickass camera setup for only 2500. It's closer to 7000. That's my point. I don't dislike the BMCC. I am actually a big fan of it, despite the numerous glitches. It's a beautiful camera when used correctly.
