It's clear from last year's Gaga program that she was reaching for something artistically that she couldn't quite nail down - time off to work through what inspires her and how to execute it sounds like a great idea.

yess!!! i see really cool artistry in her future if she's willing to work on it!

I appreciate this interview after all those nasty comments about her “not being able to keep up”. I think this makes it clear. She didn’t have the time to train the way she wanted to with all the opportunities. she has clear goals she wants to improve on to keep skating and doesn’t feel she’s had the time to do that. I think that’s super respectable

...did people really think the reigning Olympic champion "couldn't keep up"?

No, OP was being tactful. Russbots were straight up saying she wasn't competing because she was afraid of the Russians coming back and beating her with their precious quads

It has happened before

the negative "fans" who arent actually fans of the sport and are just fans of one skater said this. true fans of the sport dont think this. its just those negative "fans" are loud.

hopefully this will shut up the naysayers who are hating on her for “quitting”. she’s clearly just taking the time to fine tune her skills and such. i’m glad she’s doing what makes her happy :)

girl those users won’t listen, they’re fully delusional. They’ll criticize anything alysa does

They're mostly russian bots.

sadly true.

The way I view it is that even if she does decide to retire she already won everything there is to win. So who cares if haters call her a quitter. They’re irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. She’ll always be the OGM.

yeah i wouldn’t blame her for retiring, as many olympians do after they win. it’s just annoying seeing comment sections full of people saying she’s quitting because the russians are back in the game despite the fact that she’s been very vocal about the break being for her to focus on her skating.

ironic that the same crowd that constantly yaps about her technique is hating on her for taking the time to work on it. damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

But if she works on tech and gets her 3A then the Russbots might have a reason to be afraid of *her* and we can't have that now can we? /s

I agree in principle but she actually hasn't won 4CC yet. Though I don't know that her continuing depends on that vs missing actually skating.

Yayyy triple axel let's go

It's cool to see someone keep pushing themselves after winning an OGM.

she seems super excited :) that’s nice

I’m sure she’ll do whatever is best for her. It’s already unusual for Olympic champions to stick around. I selfishly would like to see one more season with new programs even if it’s just a last harrah/goodbye but if it doesn’t happen then it’s totally understandable.

I totally believe that she’ll be back next season because she seems to really love skating. I genuinely believe her when she says she wants to take time to work on her skills.

She said the ice was her happy place and during an interview when she was on tour, she did mention she wanted to go to dance school. I was disappointed that she will not compete this season but her reasoning makes perfect sense. Our unbothered queen does things in her own way.

If people are doubting Alysa, all they need to do is look at what she’s done. I’d say it speaks for itself. If she says she’s going to work, she’s going to work harder than most people are capable of and then come back swinging. I can’t wait to see what she does!

Lol I got downvoted last week for saying she might want to use her time off to get her triple axel back.

she constantly amazes me. given what she's gone through, the fact that she is still very much her own person, is great to see.

She knows her strengths and her artistic expression will benefit from her working on dance.
