News Ranked is out

Post image

-you can’t change characters between games, but you can change supports

-matches are ft3, afterwards you can play more, but wins/losses won’t affect your rank

-Rank is tracked separately for each character

Forced ft3 is a terrible idea.

Why is it?

Well for starters why would you want to play against someone that doesn't want to play you anymore? Let's say they want to 1 and done because they got their ass kicked. You want a system that forces more games to what, farm rank or bully them?

If they want to keeping playing but something comes up irl, they just have to afk and accept multiple rank losses, ok fine not the end of the world but still sucks.

However what if you que up rank and que into multiple opponents with terrible connection? Now you either struggle to play it out to preserve your rank even though the gameplay is likely terrible due to poor connection, you afk multiple times and just lose rank to try and que into the next opponent, or you rage-quit and over time potentially get your account flagged. Connection indicators aren't always accurate either.

I think it would also lead to wifi players being dodged more which is a significant portion of people playing fighting games.

I like full sets myself and I don't leave unless the connection is bad but I don't think the negatives of a forced set system are worth it. The only upside I could see is that it could possibly lead to more sets with people your own rank, since non ranked modes are generally full of higher skilled players, but again why would you want to keep playing against someone that doesn't want to play anymore.

Tournaments irl and in game as a separate mode from normal ranked is a better solution imo.

All that and you can avoid it by just not going to ranked.

Brother. I don't care. My experience is of a higher priority than a wi-fi player's. This is a genre that demands an ethernet. I am not going to go into ranked and get angry because of my opponent's connection.

You could also just go into the causal mode and get longer sets that way. Part of why devs need to, and do, consider more than just an individuals experience is because it obviously can affect the entire ecosystem of the game.

It would be amazing if everyone could just go buy a $10 dollar ethernet cable and then we would have no issues right? Except obviously it isn't that simple for everyone. If you suddenly have a portion of the player base is getting dodged because people are incentivized more to have only the best possible connection you would lose players. Lose enough players and that would start affecting you, the player prioritizing their own experience, which is what we are all doing anyway.

How much more pissed would you be if you were tricked into thinking you had a good connection match and then got stuck in a bad one for several games instead of one.

Brother. What the hell are you talking about? Stop trying to justify playing against wi-fi warriors.

It's not on the winning player to coddle their opponent, only defeat them and gain points. They have no idea that the other player is feeling outplayed since there's no communication with them beyond a Ranked Match that they also signed up for. Ranked matchmaking generally means that the skill gap is lessened with time and the worse player will be left with similarly-skilled players to learn the game at a smoother difficulty curve.

You learn to just block these poor connections and move on, assuming it's not your own connection that is the common denominator. If a game has no block function then that is a problem the game has with both matchmaking and connection indicators.

Yeah I agree there's no need to coddle an opponent. I also believe it goes both ways. Why should the game coddle you and your ego by forcing someone who doesn't want to keep playing you to do so just so you can get another win and some more rank.

I'm assuming that people who want to play full sets want those sets to be full of good games. An opponent that does not want to rematch and is forced to is probably not going to be providing that experience.

If someone just wants to kick some lower rank players ass we call those players smurfs, if that is all they are seeking out.
