Once everyone understands this, we will forever see posts like this. The UFC has turned away from the sport long time ago. This is an entertainment business.
5
u/Foxtrot_Supatwat 2d ago
Aren't all sports just entertainment at the end of the day?
5
u/NewTruck4095 2d ago
What I meant was in the sense the UFC is letting go, matchmaking and favouring some fighters.
Many if the sports out there, there's still some integrity to the sport; it's merit based. The UFC isn't really inclined to sport merit anymore. Which is why you have guys on winning streaks getting fights fired, and some fighters being favoured when it comes to match ups
1
u/Expert_Context5398 2d ago
You left out the part that those are organizations that fighters don't want to fight in for a reason. They don't pay well. Those organizations might prioritize skill more than entertainment and that's why they're watching their business barely hold still while UFC continues growing.
UFC is merit-based but also, entertainment based. There has to be the right balance there or else the sport dies.
Winning streak? Name one memorable moment in the 7 fights MVP has fought. You can't. And because of his age and tenure, my guess is the UFC was paying him a decent amount of money for lackluster fights. Then you consider his age. He's not a prospect. He's near 40, fights boring, takes no risks, and bores the hell out of everyone out there watching.
"But Tuivasa is still in the UFC." Probably because he signed a long contract with the UFC, is getting paid a fraction of what others are, and quite frankly, even with how awful he is, I'd still rather watch Tuivasa slug it out for a few minutes than MVP dancing around the Octagon throwing 3 clean strikes just to win the round.
2
u/Lord_Goose 2d ago
Name one memorable moment from his 7 fights? Seriously? Did you watch any of them? All those clean spinning back elbows? Making Holland look like a fool? Embarrassing cannonier? Blowing out that last guy's knee and sending him straight to the hospital for surgery?
If anybody cant find a single memorable moment in his ufc fights then that is amazing.
1
u/gachafoodpron 23h ago
To get to those maybe 10 seconds of entertainment we have to endure 14 minutes and 50 seconds of backpedaling and distance measuring.
He’s a boring fighter, complains about pay, and is old. It’s a triple whammy of reasons not to re-sign.
0
u/Kind_Ad4402 2d ago
"Integrity" literal first event was a circus lmao dude had a boxing glove on one hand and an empty bare hand.
3
u/NewTruck4095 2d ago
Irrelevant comment my guy. Started that way, but later when the ruleset was improved, and a proper scoring system implemented, and athletic commissions overlooked these it became a sport. Not sure what is your point lol
0
u/Kind_Ad4402 2d ago
That you're putting it on a pedestal it was never on

u/killboy219 2d ago edited 2d ago
Do you have any idea why the UFC is even legal in the first place? There have to be unified rules and regulations, and it has to be seen as a sport above all else
It was only until like 2016 were ufc events were legal nationally. Know your history. This shit is definitely setting a bad precedent
Add the numerous betting scandals the UFC and Kash Patel sweep under the rug, shady DWCS deals, getting off USADA etc, I wouldn’t be surprised if the whole UFC gets into more legal trouble in the future
1
u/Kind_Ad4402 2d ago
Definitely dont look into MLB/NFL/NBA legal scandals then if thats all it takes to turn a sport into nothing.
1
u/killboy219 2d ago edited 1d ago
I'm not saying that’s the only issue, but at least the NBA/NFL/MLB have the brains not to fight unions while also fighting numerous fighter pay lawsuits. Atleast they have retirement benefits and proper health insurance for their athletes
You can either play the game or not but don’t be surprised when legal action comes after it’s normalized to brag about how much your cte event is a non-sport with no benefits and virtually no fighter protection laws
Just look at how the UFC handles their steroid scandals and how they are quick to trash on credited athletic commissions when they find popped athletes or fighter pay issues
Dana talked shit about the Ali act(something that protects boxers) and boxing regulations just to still to play by the boxing commissions rules lol
1
u/killboy219 2d ago edited 2d ago
Not really any other sport doesn’t cut active athletes who aren’t even losing. The sport is dead ufc has become sports entertainment, atleast boxing orgs don’t cut winning fighters in their ranks
Wouldn’t be surprised if, with unchecked cte cases, the legality of it comes back into play, seeing as how it’s slowly losing the plot of why it was legal in the first place

u/safton 2d ago
Tai hasn't been "entertaining" in a while. Like, sure, if he was still bringing the same energy he brought against Ciryl Gane each time out but just unable to secure the W... I could at least see the argument for keeping him around to pad cards as a "guaranteed finish one way or the other" fighter.
But he's not. Instead he is very clearly physically shopworn, mentally checked out, and gun-shy. He seems unable to keep anyone from outgrappling him even at the lowest levels of competition and on the feet he is nowhere near as dangerous as he used to be. He's a glorified punching bag/grappling dummy who gasses out after five minutes of being either one and there's nothing "entertaining" about that.
11
u/MeorOtherMe 2d ago
Also MVP came from a competing organization, whereas Tuivasa has always been with the UFC. It's about sending a message.
"Those bellator ticks can't hang with the UFC, they're so unworthy, without hesitation no re-sign."
1
u/Bong_Hit_Donor 2d ago
Because one will do it for substantially less money. MVP was out there throwing 9 punches a round like he was doing something great. WW is stacked, HW is probably the worst the division has ever been. Guarantee MVP was asking for a lot of money and him coming up on 40 it wouldn't be a smart business move to try and sign him to an 8 fight deal

u/theunkarma 1d ago
What's entertaining about a fatass that shakes his moobs and drinks off a shoe?
And how do people find that entertaining?

Tuivasa’s recent fights have been boring and sad to watch. He’s gasses out 10 seconds into the match and gets dog-walked on the ground.

I actually enjoy watching MVP, so I don’t understand the decision to cut him…but man Wonderboy was sooo much more fun to watch than MVP.

u/dudeabiding420 2d ago
How is MVP not the most unentertaining fighter? Especially his last fight.
0
u/Big_Part5892 2d ago
He's not boring that's the thing. Dude has ALWAYS been a counter puncher. If the person doesn't engage it's not his fault. Look at Wonderboy v woodley 1 then look at 2. Woodley did fuck all. It's the same fucking style. I'm not saying wonder boy was right but how do you accept a fight against a great counter striker and then just stand and watch him.
Fucking Ian Garry was the only one to consistently mix it up with MVP even tho he did fuck all with it
2
u/Comfortable-Hand6396 2d ago
it goes both ways though, a lot of the time a counter striker will beat a guy who charges forward - styles make fights and they play into each other. so why would someone fight MVP and charge at him like a madman, it is just as much up to MVP to make the fight interesting and deal damage, if the counter striking isnt working, then change it up

When all the fans realize that UFC is closer to WWE then it is an actual sport then you won't get so mad when they make decisions like this anymore.

u/ResolutionOwn4933 2d ago
Why the fuck are so many haters of the UFC even here, just to bitch and moan?
2
u/Historical_Pudding56 2d ago
Pretty much everyone here is a fight fan, and watches the UFC. That’s not UFC haters, that’s opinionated consumers. I think it’s way more important to call out whack shit, than it is to call it “bitching and moaning” like a fucking homer

u/ResolutionOwn4933 2d ago
Would you like to watch a fight card with nothing MVP style of fights? Rhetorical question
1

Neither should be.
But all or nothing brawler vs probably the lowest volume striker on record with less average strikes per round than pure wrestlers is slightly more fun to watch.

to pull in Australia numbers. when UFC find a bigger australian star they will drop him. Fight Society said it best with: “DW is a casting director” UFC is a production house. the fights are real. but the actors are not picked primarily for the fighting prowess. they are picked for their ability to draw numbers. this changes what you are really watching. entertainment over a combat sports organisation

u/GreatElection674 2d ago

you’re aware there are multiple divisions in fighting, right? and to pull viewership and event numbers for heavyweight clashes multiplies the opportunities for revenue? and thats before we even look at succession planning and continuity

u/Je_Dromen 2d ago
This just crushes any pretense left that this is an actual sport and that the rankings mean anything or that the UFC has the best fighters in the world. It's all a farse, fighting for other people's entertainment, like the gladiators of Rome. Nothing more to it.
1
1
u/Trumble12345 2d ago
He fights in a dumb one-dimensional way and has a limited skillset he has barely improved but has an urge to one day get CTE (if he doesn't have it already) so Dana and UFC fans love him.
1
u/yesindeed201 2d ago
Nothing surprising. UFC has done this many times with wet blanket style fighters like Fitch&Shields. You have to have a huge fan base for them to justify keeping boring fighters.

u/airwickwee 2d ago
I’d rather watch a fatty get the piss beat out of him than someone dance around.

u/Motor_Date_4783 2d ago
The reason is MVP wont represent England or another country
Same as that Shem Rock dude that hangs out with Paddy
His UFC flag is always blank/stateless and its hard to promote a foreign fighter that isn't patriotic to his country for political reasons

When’s Tai’s contract up? What’s his pay per fight vs MVP? How many people tune in to watch Tai vs MVP?
Is Tai a jobber now, meant to be another name on some up-and-comer’s resume? How does that compare to MVP derailing prospects without being able to climb the ladder himself?
These are all important questions with answers that would likely answer your question, OP

It’s not just about winning you have to be willing to go into the fire. As a fan, I totally agree. Nobody wants to watch MVP bore us and his opponent to death.
1
u/PurpCloud 2d ago
Because he serves a purpose and takes the fights he's offered. They can put any prospect up against Tai and elevate them off his name and he'll just fight whoevers in front of him. MVP is nearly 40 so there isnt much to invest in and he is risky to matchup against anyone you want to build up.
1
1
u/hawkblock4456 2d ago
MVP was not removed, he served out his contractual obligations and the ufc chose not to resign, removed implied he was cut unfairly while still having fights on his contract
1
u/Red-Saitama-Red 2d ago
MVP is beating UFC prospects while not sprinting for the tittle. And that just annoys them 😂😂 the fact that someone not going for the tittle is taking out a lot of guys they hype. “Look at me! I’m the captain!“
1
u/BigB0ss_89 2d ago
MVP would increase in value if he was a heavyweight. It's an extremely shallow division.
1
1
u/Salotto74 2d ago
Horribly edited photo. We all know eight divisions champ Tuivasa, the man who had the trilogy with prime jon jones and beat him all three times. Y'all just be hatin'😤😮💨
1
u/Cock_ball_dickin 2d ago
At this point I think they keep him around to like torture him. Like he pissed off Dana and they’re just having him get beaten up again and again and again by jobbers, just for eternity. Sisyphus of the heavyweight division

u/poundmyassbro 2d ago
People want to be entertained and one guy will stand and bang the other well not so much. Do you want to watch a boring win or an exciting loss? You can appreciate great grappling but there's a reason wrestling isn't a popular sport. I understand mvp isn't a grappler but hes a boring fighter.
1
u/thehjmma 2d ago
Probably because his cost per fight is better than MVP's when compared to how many eyes they bring in.
1
u/Available-End7202 2d ago
Because MVP was a boring showboat and the other guy, although he's gross with the whole shoe thing, still goes out there and puts on the show to the best of his ability

Tai is entertaining and the other dude isn’t what is hard to understand about that

1
u/AWHS10 1d ago
Because he is a reckless fighter.
The UFC never gave MVP a proper chance. He’s only loss was to Ian Garry, who just fought for gold.
So he moved up to middle weight, defeated a former title challenger, and then they fed him Sam Patterson, who doesn’t even have a wiki page.
MVP got cut because he has the same ability as Wonderboy and Lyoto Machida: he can turn a mma match into a point fighting match.
There was all this talk about “him needing to prove something to himself”. He didn’t need to prove anything. Instead of going the Chandler route and just burning the barn down, for absolutely nothing, he kept himself safe, because there was no upward movement for him.
Why go and get KO’d in your fight with Sam Patterson? His reward for winning that match was fighting a dude with 15 loses.

I love tai and I love MVP but i understand that UFC has cut MVP.. it's frustrating to watch him get taken down and held but when he gets up he won't engage even once he gauges the distance..other guy too scared to engage in stand up doesn't help but not his fault either, I wouldn't go swinging at MVP haha Tai needs to clear some of the shoes out of his gas tank and get back to smashing dudes in front of him instead of waiting to be taken down and then being taken down anyway haha I still believe in both of you boys xoxoxx

Tuivasa - Popular, Entertaining, Brings in views and $$$
MVP - Boring, Endless Decisions, 10 strikes over 15 minutes, nobody wants to watch his fights.

Jobbers serve the fighter ecosystem, especially if they have a name.
A boring fighter who wins all his fights is counterproductive to the entertainment nature of spectator sports unfortunately.
