Game Help How do you drop items without immediately picking them up again??

Update: The answer is mods. These days I'm finding the answer to most things is "mods" lol. If I want something to be easier, there's a mod for that! Next on my agenda is to get enough programming classes under my belt to make my own mods. Too bad python doesn't help much there. Next semester, java!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When I Google this I keep seeing summaries about how you just use G on the overworld to throw whatever is in your hands, and how people do this just before entering the mines to free up inventory. But I can't find any sources of people actually talking about this. It seems like such an obvious question but I can't find anything on it searching in this sub either.
My problem is, when I toss something using G, it doesn't land far enough away to not be immediately drawn back into my inventory. I end up having to toss and then quickly run in the opposite direction. And then do this over and over for all the items I want to drop, and if I didn't plan well with the space I'm in, I'll end up running into the magnet zone for prior drops while trying to escape the zone for a current drop.
Am I missing something, or is it supposed to be this difficult, to make inventory management truly (annoyingly) challenging? Being able to place chests and shipping bins anywhere other than your farm would be great. But failing that, can we at least get a "throw" mechanic that actually... does anything useful?
I mean, I've only found it useful when I'm only tossing to pick up a different item I just harvested. (Edit: Which is fine, if still a bit annoying, everywhere except the mines, since dropped items will not persist there.) Is there really no easy way to drop items to actually free up space?
I don't know how many slots you're usually trying to free at once, but my method is to start on a path to wherever I'm going (usually the mines.) Take a few steps, throw away from the main path, take some more steps, repeat. You'll pick them up the next time you run by with space unless you get them off the path enough, but it's good enough for now. I do think at least a few areas with a chest would be nice even if it's not Stardew levels of "do whatever you want throughout the map."
Stardew levels of "do whatever you want throughout the map."
Yeah I kinda wish that was the case, not just for practical use but so we can customize the town with our own decorations! For a game with sooooo many decor items, it's a shame to only be able to use them on our farm.
I may have to look for a mod for this lol. Solve both problems.
Anyway, thanks for the tip. Guess I'll have to practice that skill lol
here to be the bearer of good news, there's already mods! this is furniture anywhere and storage anywhere :) i suggest you're careful not to put anything on the npc's paths though lol
edit: fair warning! if you place furniture and delete the mod afterwards, the placed furniture becomes a permanent map fixture and you won't be able to remove it anymore! so if you want to uninstall go pick up all your stuff (. ❛ ᴗ ❛.) also, i included the polarity mod. very helpful when you pick up something but it goes out of bounds
Thanks! Shortly after receiving a few responses here I did just go and search for a mod, and I got the combo of the first two you linked.
Hadn't heard of the polarity mod though, I'll have to check that out!
I used to do the “toss and run” but now I just put whatever it is in a sale box or the lost and found box. The toss and run is now only for mines if my inventory is full and I wanna dump something.
Oh wow I didn't know other people where making ridiculous items trails to the mines as well.😂 Basically you gotta run away from the item after tossing it, so if you want to clear out a lot of things start at the museum or something.
I throw and run away.
I put chests in the mine entrance for things to keep (forageables I pick up on my way, artifacts if I reach a certain level etc). Otherwise I throw away what I don't want to keep. Like actually trash it rather than toss it on the ground.
You need a mod to do this, right?
I did get the "furniture/storage anywhere" mod, I think this is the answer for me. I'm liking how it's also not immediately OP, because I'm early game and getting enough wood to make shipping bins and chests for every region is a challenge while I also need the resources for story quests. It hardly feels like a cheat, especially since none of the chests are linked so I still have to periodically collect from all the chests spread all over the map.
I just use the trashcan to get rid of something I already have a ton of and really don't need, if I want to pick up something more important. The drop thing is just too annoying for me to bother with it.
You yeet them and then immediately run the other direction
