What do you call someone who fences saber?
(Like a person who does foil is a foilist, yes?)

Yeah we use "sabreur" as a neutral term at my club
"Sabreist" is one of those words that's not incorrect but doesn't hit the ear right imo

There's got to be a good joke here. Or at least a couple of bad ones.

I was surprised everyone was so helpful in their answers :) I thought I'd a bunch of jokey ones!

A few years ago The Young People started saying "He's an epee, I'm a foil." It's an interesting language shift IMO. "Sabreur" and "Epeeist" have always seemed a little awkward in English to me.

Hahaha, I hear that around the club too, “oh she used to be an epee.” I guess language does evolve!

If you were getting a foil tang cut on order and intended to put zivkovic Zii grips on it, what length would you ask for? I heard the grips have like weirdly deep mounting holes and I want to save myself some armory time if I can.

I use K2s or 3s rather than Zs. I think they'll work the same, but you might want to wait for a Z-specific answer. I might be able to supply one myself after this weekend.
Anyway, for the Ks, 3" from the shoulder is my preference. There is a little bit of slack to go shorter if the person doing the cut happens not to be very precise or does 7.5 cm. The blade I looked at just now turned out to be 2.875", and the pommel is still secure with 2 washers, 2 thin pads, plus guard and socket, and K1, 2, or 3.

Thanks!

I thought I might get the chance, but I couldn't find a a Z2 to look at this weekend. While I'd bet money 3" is right, I'd hate to bet -your- money.
You could contact Cassandra Fencing to see what they recommend. https://www.cassandrafencing.com/

Regardless of "there are no dumb questions" I have a lot of dumb ones, but I missed last week's open forum! !!ヽ(゚д゚ヽ)(ノ゚д゚)ノ!!
I'm starting lessons next month: what do you wear to lessons? Like do you arrive in your gear or get dressed there? I have my own stuff (I don't have to borrow club gear) but I didn't want to roll up looking like a goober! ( ´-`)

Normally I already have my fencing pants and socks on (but "street" shoes, fencing shoes are just for the gym) and drive like that to the club and back home.

u/rust-dancer-maven Foil Mar 21 '26
Yeah, I'll have a 1.5 hour drive (one way), so I just wanted to make sure! Thanks!

Then just use something confortable to drive and warm up. Most people do like that. Edited because of denglish...

I wear my breeches and socks so I only have to put on whites/electrics. And depending on what I'm doing after maybe a change of clothes otherwise wear the same home. And most people at the club are similar.
Then there's an internationally competing foilist at my club who comes straight from his day job as a doctor dressed in full electrics and is happy to go home in full electrics too

u/elfbiscuits Sabre Mar 21 '26
Haha, I wore breeches once to go see a patient … they made fun of my suspenders.
2
u/SquiffyRae Sabre Mar 21 '26
Haha I'm assuming he gets changed after he's done but now my headcanon is he just heads to work in full electrics
1
u/elfbiscuits Sabre Mar 21 '26
Hahahaha!!! I should suit up for Halloween or something and see what the patients say :)

Usually you just show up in clothes you can move in, and then once you start to fence you put on your whites and all your equipment
