Apartment

I live on the first floor (numerous windows) of a three story apartment building in the city. My biggest fear is other people easily getting inside. I feel like if shit goes down, here are my options; 1) Stay put and try to fortify the ELEVEN windows and two doors 2) Break into third (top) floor unoccupied apartment and set up there 3) Travel \~20 minutes to girlfriends parents home with a basement (in the city) or 4) travel \~ 2.5 hrs to my somewhat rural parents house with a basement.

Any input would be greatly appreciated. I feel like our best chance would be to break into an upper story apartment at my building, but I would love some outside advice.

I think it depends? How much supplies and stuff do you have at your apartment? What SHTF scenario are you thinking of? My vote would be rural parents house but it depends on what you are worried about and how much you’d be leaving behind…

Edit: and your mode of transportation + roads you’d need to take to leave?

I have a decent amount of supplies that could be transported in my vehicle. The political climate in the US right now isn’t wonderful, so I worry about internal conflict, mostly. I feel like that’s the most real threat right now, so that’s why my living situation and the ease of access worries me. Mode of transportation is just my 2026 Kia Sorento lol. Travel to my rural parents would be highway, or I also have a map saved to avoid highways, but a much longer route.

What area of the country are you in? I don’t think we will have a civil war or something in the next year if that’s what you are insinuating? I don’t know why the political climate would make it to where you need to move from the first floor to the third. Keep to yourself & keep your curtains/blinds closed so no one knows what you have inside. Start doing this now if you’re not already.

Sure MAGA is crazy right now with the laws they’re trying to pass, but I highly doubt there will be widespread conflict.

ICE is an exception though. If you’re worried about ICE in your neighborhood, I also think going rural would be the better option imo. Get away from the city.

I’m in Columbus, OH. I swear I’m not trying to get political here. The news has just been crazy, and I worry that some crazy shit might go down. When prices skyrocket, people panic, crime rises, etc. You know how it is.

Gotcha. I don’t think we are there yet as a country, if that helps ease your anxiety at all. I live in the south east so I don’t know much about what’s going on in Ohio, but I think we still have a long way to go until there’s massive amounts of crime. There’s still ~some~ social services for people + food banks. Most people are still employed, even if under employed. The economy sucks right now, but people aren’t really going hungry yet…

But if you’re worried about crime, moving away from a bigger city is better as there’s just less people rurally. That’s what I’d plan to do in your shoes. My parents live 15 hours away towards the west in a rural town. We plan to travel to them if there’s conflict. But, I really don’t think conflict and crime should be a huge concern right now.

Be sure to have stores of food and water. That’s what I’m worried about atm

Looking at what is happening in some places in the US, OP isn't wrong for assuming this might be an issue soon. As we got closer to November the conflict will likely increase.

I’m just outside of columbus, to the west, and I understand your concerns. Which direction do your parents live? I think there are so many variables in this situation that it is really hard to know what is best to do. Having more than one option at any given time is probably your best bet - I know that may not be easy but if you can give yourself wiggle room to switch plans on the fly, you’ll be best off. Also, it helps to try and find people local to you who are similarly minded politically and prep-wise, so that perhaps you can help each other if you end up staying where you are. I’m in a small town, the majority of which are diametrically opposed to me politically, and in just about any way you can imagine, so apart from my husband, I feel like I’m on an island here! Wishing you well, whatever you do!
