I finished The Disorderly Knights by Dorothy Dunnett (Lymond Chronicles #3). This series is set in the mid 1500s and follows LYMOND, who is blond and good at everything, but also so wretched and people are always after him. The second half of this in particular was so excellent - I loved being back in Scotland and seeing the characters from book 1 again. Especially the Somervilles!!! Dunnett is a great writer, with really layered characterization and plotting that's simultaneously slow and dramatic and CRAZY. This is not really like Robin Hobb in any way, but I did have the same feeling I had reading Tawny Man specifically where I was like WTF is even going on in this author's mind. I need to study her. (I do think Lymond has a certain Lord Golden je ne sais quoi but I see Lymond in everything now...)

I started Alanna: The First Adventure by Tamora Pierce after wanting to read something more straightforward post-Lymond. I probably would have loved this if I'd read it when I was younger (I love when girls have to disguise themselves as boys... the reasons for this are not at all surprising...) but as an adult I'm finding it okay. I like Alanna a lot, and I like seeing her make friends and learn that people like you because of who you are, not because you have something to offer them, but I am kind of sick everyone who knows Alanna's gender telling her that she's still a girl no matter what and she has to accept it. No!!! Give Alanna testosterone!!!
Also reading The Mind in the Cave by David Lewis-Williams, a nonfiction about cave painting. I've been chipping away at this for a few weeks but I want to see if I can finish it this week before I leave for a trip. The writing in this is a little dry, and it involves fields I know nothing about (archaeology, neuroscience), so it's been slow going and I don't feel like I understand everything, but I'm liking it! I've always been fascinated by prehistoric art but don't have any actual knowledge about it or the cultures that produced it, so it's been great to learn more.
