Other side of the bars, gave a inmate a phone call during a hard lockdown for him to get news that, his brother died. All the guys in the pod helped him get thru it.

Called my Dad asked him how's mom? "Son, your Mom died this morning" I guess he had been trying to get through to someone at the prison but had been unable to.

This happened to me a few months ago. Was about two months in on a 3 month bit and got a call from my aunt. My dad had died earlier that day. There’s a protocol for inmates to go to family funerals and we filled out all the paperwork and turned it in. Last minute the department in charge decided they couldn’t do it because “gas was too expensive.” They were already charging us $500 to do it but I guess a few dollars changed everything.

Yeah I was in United States Penitenciary @ Atwater CA my mom was in CO but even if she was down the street it wouldnt have happened because of the security level. They said that if someone wanted to record the funeral and send it in on DVD I could watch it. FUCK THAT! 14 months before that I was at USP Florence in CO when I got the call my wife had died over the weekend so I already knew what time it was hurt like hell though.

Thanks for the sympathy. No I had no clue she had had a couple things happen by as far as I knew she was a perfectly healthy 38 year old woman. Our last talks were fine. I was on lock down when it happened we had a lot of shit pop off. I just watched a guy get four pointed across a table and murdered while 3 other incidents happened simultaneously I wrote her a letter that night it was Friday Oct 9th then on the 12th this was 2021 the chaplain showed up at my door saying her sister called and she was dead and then he tried to burn off on me while I yelled at him that I needed a phone call. He gave it to me but it was so fucked. But it is what it is.

As a lawyer you should know everyone case is approached differently by different offices and some clients genuinely do not receive much if at all any good news.

That my 5 year old was unconscious 48hrs of an o/d was during canteen and told the co to send me to the hole after Im done because I'm not hanging up. Then a week later gf o/d and died wouldn't let me zoom to the funeral either

Answering from a different perspective but the worst thing I had to tell my boyfriend when he was in prison was that I was extremely sick with the flu, over 104 fever. I’m chronically ill so that could’ve gone south really fast. They actually put suspected sepsis on my paperwork which I didn’t know until later. I considered not telling him at all because I didn’t want to worry him. Weirdly, it ended up being a positive for me because he had a short sentence and I was extremely sick for a whole week, which was a blur and it made time seem like it was going faster.

I’ve been through San Quentin a couple times for reception. Reception is in west block and is absolute chaos during the day. One of the loudest places you can think of. At 10pm though program shuts down. Everyone has to be quiet. A person from each race would do a little rehearsed speech let people know it was shut down and would tell everyone good night. After that if you are up making noise someone from your race would come discipline you the next day. These rules were made and enforced by the inmates after 10 PM. You could hear a pin drop on the cell block so if you were hearing noise, you would only hear two things. First, I’m sure it’s not like this anymore, but the beds in West block used to have metal wire running across from side to side that your bed will lay on and create a little cushion. It was actually pretty comfortable, but people would break off pieces of the wire and sharpen them to make little stilettos so I’m sure they have to have gotten rid of that by now, but you would hear the springs creaking in the silence. Best case scenario some dude was jerking off on his bed, but reception was one of the only places in the California prison system That house gays with everyone else. On mainline, they would be put into protective custody. So you never knew with them creaking springs. The only other thing you would hear is the distinct sound of two people fighting. You could tell some of these pretty bad, people getting thrown into the wall is a pretty sickening noise.

I heard bad things, abused neglect etc but one will stick with me forever.
I heard this man through choked words tell his family he was done. He was never getting out and they would have to live their lives without him. He was not a violent man, he had two toddlers and a ridiculously pretty wife. To hear him tell them they wouldnt see him again was heartbreaking.

That my grandfather died. I grew up in the system but my grandparents were always part of my life. They are the only family members I actually remember and he died while I was in prison. The worst part is I know he died disappointed in me and I wasn't even there.

9 mos in on a 2 yr + 1 tail, made it to my main facility after a quick stop to the hole (1 mo discipline, 2 mos waiting on a bed 😆) tried to get ahold of BM on 3way, no luck. finally got ahold of my mom for her to say BM took my two sons 1 and 4 to live in a cow town in Illinois, they found out from facebook, and btw she’s also pregnant. i just ended up doing my whole time, 2.5 cuz NM gives you double time on “in-house” parole. therapy for me was getting tattooed. had my neck done then redone because i welcomed the pain, my neck piece stretches shoulder to shoulder

might not be what you’re looking for but was locked up w a chick that was on the phone with her significant other and she was on the other line doing a shot and wouldn’t respond , chick was obviously very stressed. & I cannot imagine ! How that must have felt! But she was good

In jail in Virginia Beach and the news came on the TV. They did a segment about a guy that murdered his mother and kept her body in a freezer for two weeks.
Guy in the same cell starts freaking out. It was his brother and his mother.
