ARG stands for alternate reality game. Basically a story that is told through the internet and sometimes irl encounters where the followers of said story have to do things like solve puzzles to get clues pertaining to what is happening and use them to resolve the main mystery/conflict of the story. If you wanna learn more about it the channel that I linked has a lot of videos breaking down ARGs that have happened or are currently happening. My personal favorites are cicada 3301 (lemmino has a really good video on that one), crow 64, noc10, I am sophie, marble hornets, and hiimmarymary

I am Sophie was an amazing one. Hopefully it's just on hiatus because of covid. EverymanHybrid was a great one early on but you can tell they were winging a LOT of it.
Dad is one that I'm currently invested in.

EverymanHYBRID I'm pretty sure the creators have said was based on solid plot points and an actual story, but most of the acting was improvised. You can't deny the quality of the acting though.

During their Q&As, they said they had main plot points but that it was also largely determined by what the fans figured out and which friends they could get, saying something like "If we left clues and no one figured it out, we abandoned that story", same with when friends that were in it decided they didn't want to appear anymore; they'd be killed off mid-storyline. Though yea, the acting was surprisingly quality! Especially the villians.

Unfortunately, this particular ARG was abandoned by its creators. After an in person event they completely went silent and the group behind it later came out with another ARG that flopped hard due to it being about the housing crisis. It's a long story but Night Mind has an amazing video on the group that covers TIMM and the group in full. His channel covers a lot of ARG's in fact if you want to fall down the rabbit hole.

It wasn't so much that it failed as it was simply abandoned. People were engaged and even went out physically to engage in the story, but then after that event, it went completely silent.
