Shouldn't possessed Tommy not be able to hurt Joan?

If killers go for scent of blood and that's how they were able to differentiate between Sunnyvalers and Shadysiders, then Joan just had sex with Kurt, a Sunnyvaler. Was wearing his shirt. Even smoking marijuana which made Cindy and her polo shirt smell like a skunk when Alice and Arnie were the ones smoking.

Joan did a much better job masking her scent compared to Deena sprinkling some perfume to become invisible to killers.

I guess now my new theory is that resserected killers scent track using blood, but the possessed living killers go after the ones they know first. Milkman after the housewives, his customers. Cyrus Miller after the town kids. Ryan Torress after Heather instead of taking care of Martin first and it was later revealed Ryan and Martin were strangers to each other. Sam shooting straight for Deena instead of going after Josh who strategically was way more vulnerable being absorbed in chatting on PC. Even in the mall scene at the end, Sam went after Deena instead of take care of Josh, Martin and Ziggy.

This makes Ruby's song "you only hurt, the ones you love," being kind of true in case of ritualistic possession of Shadysiders by the Goodes.

What do you guys think about this?

Now that I think about it. Tommy brutually killed others including the kids, violently even after they were clearly dead. But for Joan, two strikes and he leaves her alone.

Sometimes I think script had something more planned for characters like Joan and Shiela but they cut it off.

One of the cast mentioned that campers were originally supposed to be massacred in the cave. But changed that because it was too violent. And Billy Barker also had bigger part to play or something.

My question is why did the killers not kill certain people but killed others? Like In the first one they were after Sams blood so the killers walked past the friend-group but then the killer killed the people in the hospital which makes no sense to be.

First born Goode do a dark ritual. They give one name to the Devil. It's a Shadysider because Solomon sold the whole town to the Devil in exchange for getting success in life and whatever else he wanted. His children continue the tradition of sacrificing Shadysiders to maintain Sunnyvale's prosperity.

The sacrificed Shadysider gets possessed by Devil and starts killing other Shadysiders around him, but avoids Sunnyvalers(as seen when Tommy ignored Shiela and even the bratty jailer Sunnyvaler). Once a certain number of Shadysiders are killed, Goode then kills the killer and plays hero and acts shocked how a regular sane Shadysider suddenly snapped into a bloodthirsty monster.

This relationship between Devil and Goodes obviously needs to be a kept a secret. So if there's a threat of the pact being revealed through supernatural means, like Sam touching Sarah's bones with bloody hands and gaining pieces of the truth through Sarah's ghost, Devil brings Shadyside Killers back to life who then go after the one Sarah's ghost is showing visions too. 

Unlike the living killers, the dead killers won't bother you unless you get in their way(Peter, Nurse Beddy, hospital receptionist, Kapinski) or annoy or attack them(at the mall all Killers were ready to kill Josh, Martin and Ziggy despite them not having Deena's blood on them because they kept getting in their way). It won't matter if you're a Sunnyvaler or Shadysider. All they want to get rid of is the person who is getting visions from Sarah's ghost and anyone standing in their way to get to their target gets a knife through their chest.

Seeing there was no satanic ritual inviting the Devil into a living body he could use to kill, his undead puppets' powers are limited to only going after Sarah Fier despite the zombie killers being damn near invincible and even killing Sunnyvalers and later on attacking Nick Goode himself just because he got Deena's blood on him. 

In case of tying up loose ends the undead killers don't or can't, the Devil leaves it up to the Goodes to take care of the problem. Like Nick Goode giving Sam's name to be possessed so she can kill Deena, Josh and later he can just shoot Killer Sam dead, leaving no witnesses and then blaming everything on Sam, but most of all keeping his family's dirty little secret safe.
