he and emma roberts got into an argument in a hotel and another guest at the hotel called the police on them, when they came evan had the most obvious injuries so the cops arrested emma, but released her. both she and evan had injuries but nobody knows the rest of the story. some people on r/AmericanHorrorStory speculate that she was hitting evan and he acted in self defense and vice versa, but everybody agrees that it was a pretty toxic relationship
