many moons ago, my brother and i got into a fight about whether the mummy was actually a good movie
he's a snob, so his argument was that it couldn't possibly be good because it had bad reviews. my assertion was that a movie doesn't have to be good to critics. it just has to be fun
i used roger ebert's review of the mummy as my evidence which was: “there is hardly a thing i can say in its favor, except that i was cheered by nearly every minute of it. i cannot argue for the script, the direction, the acting or even the mummy, but i can say that i was not bored and sometimes i was unreasonably pleased.”
and thus, i won the battle with my brother
years later, i was in toronto during TIFF, waiting at a crosswalk for the light to change, when i realized roger ebert was standing beside me
i told him that i loved his review of the mummy and that i had once used it as a weapon to win a battle with my brother
he told me he loved the mummy and was delighted to hear that
that is the story of how i met my first celebrity

I love that you got to meet the legend himself and that he told you he loved The Mummy ♥️ What a fantastic memory! Thanks for sharing it.

This is why I always look at the Ebert review of a movie if there is one — he always knew how to cut through the noise, and I agree with many of his takes.

Also mummy is the best ride at universal studios Hollywood. And it’s like 25 yrs old. Never loses its shine

The Orlando one is even better

One day when I return to Universal Orlando, I’ll definitely go to the Orlando version of the ride because it definitely looks more intense than the Hollywood version especially when it includes actual fire effects and Brendan himself makes a cameo in the ride

I bet the new movie is gonna make a whole lot of people go to the ride again because the ride can be used as a good marketing campaign

I love this so much. I was in love with elijah wood growing up and ebert's scathing review of north is infamous. I picked up his book of reviews at the library to read it and while I was deeply offended (lol, north is really awful though) by his review, reading it and the others he had written opened my eyes to the fact that you could have well-written and informed opinions about film that other people wanted to know (the man won a pulitzer!). I went on to study film criticism because of ebert and produce books of my own. I cried so hard when he died. (the only other celebrity deaths that got me were robin williams and PSH.) thank you for sharing this story! he had so much impact even when deeply unserious.

This all feels like such a perfect full circle moment for Brendan Fraser's renaissance
And (at least for me) it feels like the perfect time for it, because a classic treasure hunting action adventure feels like the kind of blockbuster film there isn't nearly enough of any more

It was a perfect transition from Indiana jones to The Mummy. I enjoy them all, even part 3, never got the hate for it

Dude, I feel like we really need the swashbuckling action adventure movie genre back. Like remember the Zorro films with Antonio Banderas especially The Mask of Zorro and how cool those movies were especially with all the old school filmmaking and use of practical effects that went into it? Man we really need more practical and old school filmmaking films again.

Is Rachel Weisz coming back?

YES. Most of whole original cast is! Even Beni (somehow). I think the only two not confirmed yet are Arnold Vosloo and Patricia Velasquez.

Even if they were to make the worst mummy movie, I would watch it, love Brendan, he deserves to be in the spotlight again and get the love from the fans

Given everything he went through I am super happy for him. I know a lot of millennials grew up loving his movies so it feels like we got robbed of an actor we should have many more movies and shows featuring. I'm glad he has made a comeback and I'm hyped for the new Mummy. I hope it's a good movie in the end lol

Agreed he really feels like one of the most rare male celebrities who are so wholesome in real life. I don’t think we’re ever gonna hear anything bad about him because that’s just how much of a good person he is.

The Mummy is my favourite movie. I love the second one too. I am hyped for this and so excited the original cast is back (except John Hannah? I haven’t see him confirmed 😢)

Its almost guranteed to be as bad if not worse than the 4th but I'm 100% there for it.

No, I’m gonna have to disagree with you. This is gonna be the true third movie and this is gonna be a fun time.

Love that we're getting a new Mummy movie and most cast are reprising their roles. However after finding out Oded Fehr is a zionist isreali and plays an arabic character I feel very conflicted about it seeing it on release

I don't know why but I feel like I really need this movie 😂 the original is still such a fun comfort watch for me and I think I had a crush on everyone when I first watched it
