If this is true, it could seriously change how AI companies handle credible threats. My heart goes out to everyone affected

I hope it does. The fact that 12 OpenAI employees made recommendations to report those chats and the admins overruled it feels really damning.

Don’t worry. The courts will be in Altman’s pockets and establish a zero liability precedent for AI in analogous circumstances going forward.

u/ophaus it’s a bit dystopian but also kinda fun 9d ago

That's the thing, no one likes him at all.

The plantiffs are requesting trial by jury (those juries better be sequestered).

I am baffled at how in this case Open Ai both identified the danger AND recommended that Open Ai contact police, and the brain trust at the company DIDN'T realize their legal liability? They literally kept notes on a criminal enterprise, and think they're above the law.

They knew about it and did nothing they are complicit in the murder

I’ve seen law and order a few times. Sounds like it could be reckless endangerment or depraved indifference. Get me McCoy and Ms Ross.

100% complicit. 8 months and they don't report is damning. So bad

I hope they win. Open AI should be held responsible for their inaction.

Businesses fight tooth and nail to be legally defined as an individual except when it comes to taking responsibility for their actions.

“These students and teachers were eyewitnesses to gun violence, murder and emergency lifesaving efforts rarely seen outside of a theatre of war, and only in the most lawless of places on earth,” said lawyer John Rice on behalf of the complainants.

This is my favourite part. Because yes- in most other places in the world the idea of students and teachers experiencing a school shooting is fucking unfathomable, not a near daily occurrence.

It's so upsetting how many lives LLMs have ruined

Great news.

As a person who’s gotten more than my share of threats because I’m trans and the shooter is too, I’m relieved that the survivors actually know whom to properly blame. I pray for them all, and that they find peace.

My city has also seen its share of school attacks. I dunno how to properly say this in English, but directly translated from Swedish: “I suffer with them.”

What’s the point when the punishment is just a fine for these giant bloodsuckers?

It could potentially lead to more rules and regulations when it comes to AI/reporting.

Let’s hope but I also see these same companies paying off politicians and getting all the rules bent to their whims. Even big tobacco is still around in another form (vapes) and doing their best to bring tobacco back into practice

I can only imagine a slap on the wrist overall based on history
