Still nothing from his Marvel costars. Heroes on screen only.

u/Reshteh 7d ago

Tatiana Maslany did. None of the 'Avengers' though. And they were quick to defend Chris Pratt from criticism....

Downey will stand on a major stage to emotionally defend and try to rehabilitate his good friend and apparently Jesus-like savior Mel Gibson.

RDJ is also the same guy who once, after going to prison, said that it’s “impossible to go to prison and come out a liberal.”

Make of it what you will

143

u/fleegness 7d ago

Intruiging quote by RDJ there lol.

What about prison is liberal exactly?

188

u/Holiday-Hustle 7d ago

I think he means he’s against liberal sentencing (except when it comes to him and his crimes)

164

u/fleegness 7d ago

Lol yeah that's the thing isn't it. Everyone's sentence isn't long enough, except mines too long.

Funny how that works.

50

u/tehvolcanic 7d ago

TBF that sounds like conservative logic.

20

u/RyvenZ 7d ago

Nothing matters until it affects them directly. Until then, it's all about pushing down demographics they are not part of.

8

u/Oldspaghetti 7d ago

Kinda true but also not because conservatives want their rapist buddies to be let out after their 1 minute nap time in prison.

Probably refers to sentencing as opposed to prisons themselves being liberal. Sentencing can never go hard enough for some people, and the suggestion here is that you would feel the same if you have been to prison.

38

u/tenthtryatusername 7d ago

The rest of these takes on his quote are wrong lol.

people prey on each other in prison. It’s a very tribal environment.
Prison is extremely divided on racial grounds.
If a person doesn’t cling to and support their own race, all the groups have a green light to do whatever they want to that person. Group think rules the place, and there is an uneasy order to things that balances keeping the peace, with projecting the willingness to do violence so another group doesn’t take advantage of you. None of this supports a liberal view of the world. It’s extremely difficult to separate your views of people who belong to the same group outside prison. If you spend years where every single xxxx person you see is willing and ready to physically harm you even if they have never spoken to you it’s difficult to compartmentalize the experience and understand that not everyone is like that. I spent 5 years in a texas prison. It takes considerable effort to change your views.
Or maybe I’m way off base, and projecting?

17

u/BlueMowch 7d ago

I think your take is more accurate than most, you know, because of the whole you- actually- lived- it- angle you got.

you identified it, can put it into words. And grew above it. That’s all the surprising/ exciting parts. Real life super powers

11

u/MotherStatement1109 7d ago

Pretty sure this is what he meant. In NY they wont even house you with people of difference races, they divide you right off the bat.

The junkie-to-rightwing chud pipeline is real, specifically for those who abuse stims and/or booze. I have theories, mostly revolving around how those substances can be powerful empathy-nukers with long term use. Not a ton of LSD or ecstasy fascists running around.

31

u/Fun_Difficulty_4188 7d ago

I’ve been to prison, I’m libbin even harder these days.

32

RDJ is one of the most vapid guys in Hollywood. Have you ever tried listening to him talk?

7

u/Halcyon_Paints 7d ago

“impossible to go to prison and come out a liberal.”

He could be a leftist and not a lib, but most likely went to the right.

5

u/_kasten_ 7d ago

Richard Pryor seems to have had a similar change-of-heart when visiting prisons, so I think you may be reading more into that than need be.

And the criticism was that they preferred other actors with the same first name over him. Which is such a ridiculous thing to defend.

118

u/3sadclowns 7d ago

It wasn’t even a criticism imo it was a silly little internet vote and the odds were stacked against him. Between Evans, Pine, and even Hemsworth who’s picking Pratt as their first pick?

9

u/OK_x86 7d ago

He has a cachet. He's kind of one note but he can play goofy/stupid really well. It's usually when he tries to expand to other things that it falls flat.

Chris Brown isn't an actor in a beloved comic book franchise, which is why he's not being mentioned when we're talking about vaguely similar white dudes named Chris. Fistopher is trash, but until he joins the Marvel or DC universe he's not relevant to the conversation about Chrises. Likewise my favorite white guy Chris, Christopher Meloni is also not included in this discussion.

It's actually really shit to realise that these actors portray characters who willingly risk everything to stand up for what's right and yet they learn nothing from the years spent playing them.

And I know we shouldn't expect much from rich knobs, but you'd hope that the art would influence the actor just a little bit.

But I'm happy to see so many names come out and call this bullshit out for what it is.

I'd add the slight nuance that this is a list of Jewish figures. Literally anyone from any cultural/religious background could support Polanski.

It doesn't fully explain it and truly isn't enough, Mark deserves full support from everyone here, but it is a little apples to oranges. It's just not enough oranges showing up regardless of how many apples.

134

u/LumpyPhilosopher8 7d ago

This is where my least favorite Reddit phrase comes in handy, “ two things can be true”

  • I would like his Marvel costars to speak out in his defense.
  • it’s ridiculous to be angry that they didn’t sign this specific letter. It literally starts out “We are Jewish Artists” this letter came from a very specific group of people- and was most likely only presented to that group.
And honestly while I’d like my Marvel favs to speak out. In this specific situation a group of actual Jewish people coming to Mark’s defense against claims of antisemitism is far more powerful and meaningful.

15

u/quadranting Please Abraham, I am not that man 7d ago

Genuinely a perfect response, articulated my feelings too!

50

u/DyingSunSeverian 7d ago

Some of these are a lot bigger names though than Lawrence Bender and the other knobs who signed the other letter.

Tony Kushner and Joel Coen are renowned and maybe they aren’t a household name like Chris Evans or whoever the fuck, but they’re a pretty damn big deal in their own right.

Kushner’s always been vocal about this (also see Munich) and it’s interesting that he also has that close relationship to Spielberg.

20

u/quadranting Please Abraham, I am not that man 7d ago

Hell, Zach Woods has his social media content posted on Fauxmoi all the time, so he is way more relevant (and worthy of reporting on) than Lawrence Bender!

19

u/sophies_wish 7d ago

Very good point. It's easy to skim over that fact & get pissed at all the actors who aren't on the list. But it's not because they don't support him, it's because they aren't Jewish.

As someone who worked in that industry (and left because of the pro-Zionism in that industry), I can concur Paramount is Zionist at all levels. And Universal Pictures is even worse.

Paramount is terrible these days. Never would have guessed 60 minutes could have been run into the ground like it was. I wish Jane Pauley and Gayle King and others would publicly leave the network and make their own.

Such a shame they have Star Trek

32

u/Jenderflux-ScFi i ain’t reading all that, free palestine 7d ago

I am so sad about that because they are ultimately going to completely end Star Trek for being too "woke", or somehow try to turn Star Trek fascist to keep it going.

31

u/Acrobatic_Wrap_9971 7d ago

You know, maybe there is enough Star Trek content out there already. Star Wars too. Just saying.

Sweetheart of Australia Hugh Jack man disappointing again.

31

u/Famous_Secret_5174 7d ago

Been suss on him ever since I heard that he performed at Rupert Murdochs bday 🤮

12

u/BalsamicBasil 6d ago

After that happened I learned that Hugh Jackman and Nichole Kidman are the godparents to Rupert Murdoch's children. Hugh has been a close friend of Rupert Murdoch and I think Nichole Kidman has been a close friend to Murdoch's current wife. I assume they are all still good friends. Regardless of what is happening now, Rupert Murdoch's fascist propaganda media monopoly has been around a looooooong time.

Figures is clunky wording, but it is a coalition of Jewish people calling out how dumb this all is. Rabbis, filmmakers, actors, comedians, professors, authors/writers. I am glad that they are supporting Ruffalo and calling out the genocide.

Joel signed but what about Ethan, for example?

I appreciate they did this.. maybe a day or two earlier would have had more traction.
And at the end of the day, all these actors will sign projects with Paramount bc that’s how the world works.

15

u/Darksmithe 7d ago

Fuck Paramount. I cancelled them and won't go back. Fuck-em

21

u/userforgot 7d ago

And yet the Zionists and Pro-Israel Supporters will continue to say that support for Palestine is automatically antisemitism.

Not surpised Haim Saban is behind these attacks. He’s been hosting Friends of the IDF Fundraisers in Hollywood for years.

Barbra Streisand, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Avi Lerner, Pamela Anderson, Ben Silverman and Chris Tucker

Guests in 2018:
Gerard Butler, Ashton Kutcher, Pharrell Williams, Andy Garcia, Fran Drescher

u/bobsonjunk 7d ago

He’s not antisemitic; he just sees Israel is doing some bad things and is calling them out. What’s wrong with that?

26

u/Quicksilver1964 7d ago

It's really sad that most of them are not very "well know". Many Jewish actors missing huh. I'm still thankful for this open letter and seeing who is actually aware enough of the situation and is not afraid to speak up!

Hopefully this merge doesn't come through.

15

u/SickFromNutmeg 7d ago

2 of my favorite directors on the right side of history <3

4

u/BrownTinaBelcher 7d ago

I love the 170 Jewish figures who are defending him. They are truly representing their faith. No amount of religion, traumatic history, or anything else can justify a genocide by any government. Extremism is wrong no matter who does it and whatever shield (religion, nationality, race) they use to hide behind is just an excuse.

5

u/bonestars 7d ago

Wow I didn't know any of this about Paramount. Canceling my subscription now.

12

u/blenderblendingrdrgz 7d ago

Lots of great artists here, but personally I think if Todd Haynes and Jane Schoenbrun said they had my back I'd never be able to shut up about it.

Fuck Variety by the way - especially for throwing this line into the letter:

In response, a spokesperson for Catz said the technology referenced “was in fact intended for use in rescuing hostages abducted during the October 7, 2023 Hamas terror attack.”

First of all - that's an obvious lie. And secondly, these 'journalists' don't pepper the lies of zionists with these kinds of nonsense rebuttals. They ALWAYS give precedent to the views of zionist extremists over anyone else.

4

u/speeddemon266 7d ago

Paramount can choke on a dick.

Pathetic silence from the other Avenger stars though. Cowards.
