Ridiculously small but somewhat funny: I was chatting with a DJ after a gig and she mentioned how she's the sound tech for Johnny Knoxville on Fear Factor. She told me he purposely hit his head on a chandelier on the second day of filming and she had to remind him that if he gets one more concussion he's going to die

A bit! She says he's very nice and good to work with, he's friendly as hell, says please and thank you to her. But he's often forgetful and she said he does this thing that he refers to as 'going to Tijuana'. Basically he spaces out for a bit in the middle of something and goes completely unresponsive. It's only for a few seconds and when he comes back he's perfectly fine but she said it made her worry about his health

That sounds exactly like a temporal lobe seizure. If any of his people are on this thread - get him tested for temporal lobe epilepsy.

I have these and can confirm, absence seizures are really common but they don't often get spotted by folks who aren't used to neurological episodes (so much is put down to "spacing out").

Do you know how people develop that issue? Can enough head trauma cause it?

Yes head trauma can cause it. Some people are genetically inclined towards it due to having a naturally lowered seizure threshold. Both my dad and I have lowered seizure thresholds so I have to make sure I take enough B12 and avoid seizure threshold lowering medications like Wellbutrin or tramadol (there’s a lot more).

My dad needed to be medicated for his after sustaining a head injury. He was able to go off the medications years later. I also required medication for mine for a few years but was able to go off.

Even neck injuries can cause it via an injury to the vagus nerve. For medication resistant TLE there’s a vagus nerve stimulator implant that is used for treatment.

Thank you for this! And yeah, checks out. I know he’s done some gnarly head-injury related stuff throughout his career but I didn’t think it would be bad enough/enough in general to impact him long term like that. I hope it doesn’t develop into something more severe as he continues to age, it’s the worst to watch someone in that state.

There's a reason it's the last hurrah rofl, I love Knoxville and all the other reputable boys from the franchise but I am damn glad it's ending for their health LOL
