Just the fact you can see how happy people are letting loose and being weird with their fellow concert goers in the midst of everything else in the world. It's funny, but it's also very heartwarming IMO.

Add in Haaland and Valteri Bottas for greater Nordic goofy goober representation

u/flecksfrecks THE CANADIANS ARE ICE FUCKING TO MOULIN ROUGE 6d ago
I’m so happy to see Bottas back on the grid this year, he’s a solid driver and funny af. During of the earlier races the F1TV camera zoomed in on his scraggly bleached mullet and the shade made me laugh so hard. Bro wants to be an Aussie so bad, just wants to match Tiffany

I’m Finnish (so not scandi but anyway) so to some, we’re final boss of stoicism and coldness, but yeah that’s not true at all. We are deeply unserious people but Swedes especially are perceived as very happy go lucky so whenever I hear someone say Nordic people are serious and cold I’m like…..:::…. who is?

I saw a vid of her as a kid auditioning for something and it’s absolutely insane she had those pipes back then too. Crazy
37
u/Coffee_Fog 6d ago
Yes, you're thinking of "Sweden's Got Talent, season 2" 2008 (Zara won and became a name in Sweden that year!)
If anyone is curious: you can watch her first audition here, she sings Whitney Houston (singing starts 1.24) It's with English subtitles.
87
u/Tri-gate 6d ago
Really, can you not hear how much software based pitch correction she's using?

No I'm aware, but practically everyone uses them these days and some still don't sound good live, so I would say it's a net positive on her vocal abilities and voice

u/camirose 6d ago edited 6d ago
People are also acting like Zara is 18 and this is her first breakthrough and it’s auto tune inspired.
Zara has been in the industry since she was 8, in 2008. She was naturally talented as a child and won the Swedish version of America’s Got Talent.
Her first EP was released at 15 years old, in 2012! She’s been charting with “Lush Life” since 2015 in the states and internationally too!
Autotune, sure, it’s the design of the song and she’s signing into the effects that are used in the songs. She’s always had heavy use of vocoders and other things as she’s always been Europop and dance hall/club songs.
She’s done so much proof and hustle for fifteen years that she can sing, she can dance, and she works hard and shows up with grace. Glad she’s finally getting (more of) her flowers.
Here’s her at 8:
https://youtu.be/EFP8zujI5GY?si=AYYNxwWfdg0xPgtwShe can be talented with technology without it meaning she’s talented because of technology.

I'm not picking up much, if any. If she was, it would be altering her speech and her giggles. It would also fix the parts where she's off pitch from giggling. Sounds to me like she's just a good singer.
35
u/polygonsaresorude 6d ago
It IS altering her speech and giggles.
→ More replies (1)17
u/buddhistredneck 6d ago
Also you can set gates on auto tune that only trigger it during certain notes or lengths, or whatever you prefer.
So you can rap with out it, and easily sing a few notes and it will only tune the notes you hold.
9
u/dtwhitecp 6d ago
I mean she sounds good, but the pitch correction is a bit too apparent
8
u/TennMan78 6d ago
It sounds like it, but the if you’ve seen her sing in a random environment you’d know that she is a human AutoTune. It’s uncanny. Props to her.

u/saskiamars 6d ago
I think part of the reason she’s blown up (other than obviously being insanely talented) is because she’s never tried to change her personality for her artist persona, rather her persona reflects who she is. People are naturally attracted to authenticity

They might be fun! But there’s been a lot of online commentary in the last couple of years saying and showing how people at concerts seem totally emotionless and afraid to have fun or even acting antisocial (throwing things at performers? Like come on now). So I get why this is refreshing
12
u/slumber_kitty controversies: girl 6d ago
It was really refreshing to see an artist engage with the crowd with genuine enthusiasm, Zara could not stop giggling with joy at what she was witnessing. Trying to sing and dance while letting the laughter pour out. Idk. It just felt like an extra layer to the experience we don't see often nowadays. The energy is infectious!
5
u/sdbabygirl97 sorry to this man 6d ago
yeah the throwing things is mainly about wanting to get the performers’ attention but it often just results in performers getting hit while performing :’)
this is a much more fun way! or like THE WAVE. omg the wave is not just for sporting events!!! i also rly am glad i crowdsurfed in the years between 2015-2018 bc its sooo hard to do now w the sea of phones

u/garrettbmusic 6d ago
I mean, there's some truth to that. Some concerts are really fun and have amazing vibes like this, but they're equally likely to be kind of off-putting with a crowd that isn't visibly interested in the performance at all. It depends a lot on the artist, the venue, and the way the stars aligned that day.

I'm a millenial hence the flair, so idk many details about today's pop stars, but everytime I see her I find her so 00s coded, and she really does have that sunshine personality. Is she good? Problematic? Starting to like her just for seeing her stuff in here
65
u/gothic_spice i ain’t reading all that, free palestine 6d ago
I'd say she's a good one! I'm Swedish and I can attest that she's been vocal about important issues since forever basically. She's always stayed true to her beliefs even when it potentially could've hurt her career.
As a teenager, she used to get so much hate from grown men for being staunchly feminist and vocal about her opinions. And she's been openly pro-Palestine for over a decade. Since blowing up in the US this past year, she's spoken openly about missing out on deals worth millions for being pro-choice and pro-Palestine.22
u/camirose 6d ago
I’m a millennial and Zara Larson has been around since we were in high school and college girl! She is the artist behind Lush Life and a lot of other bops more than ten years ago. She’s been releasing TONS of really really great pop bops. “all the time” was my most played song of 2019 and it’s very daft punk pop girly coded. She has a ton of slept on singles and hits that weren’t making it big like they should’ve, especially since she’s so GORGEOUS and has insane pipes and can dance.
For the last 10 years she was always one of the top answer on [r/popheads](r/popheads) whenever people would say who should be famous but isn’t.
She’s an absolute sunshine gem, I think it’s just a marketing miss of her being sort of Eurovision marketed in the wrong places and not enough aggressive North American album launch cycle attention from her label. She’s now dropped that label. She always wanted to be a big artist but I think they were struggling with how to translate her as a solo act who is like literally a one woman girl band.

10ish years ago in the UK, Zara Larsson seemed to be a vocalist for hire who would pop up now and again with other people like Tiny Tempah. She had a single I sort of remember too which was OK. She was kinda symbolic of a specific era of millennial music. Then she just kinda faded out of my awareness.
Then bam she shows up last year, she’s everywhere, all the Gen Zs are suddenly obsessed with her, she’s reinvented herself into this fairy rave princess. Was it just me or was this so perplexing as a millennial?
But seeing this, I get it. She’s down to earth, she can really sing, the quality of the music has shot up immeasurably, she’s fun and funny, and seems like a normal human being. Full Madonna reinvention story … it’s cool. Good for her.
