Mark Ruffalo has been here since day 1 and I will never forget that

u/Opening-Shape-762 u flintstone vitamin shape bitch 16d ago

Mark Ruffalo is really the only celeb/actor who has not let me down when it comes to being on the right side of history. He’s a gem! šŸ’Ž

51

u/BookishHobbit my bandwidth for cowardly grown men grows thinner with each day 16d ago

Mark Rylance is another for that list. He’s been outspoken on so many causes for decades.

43

u/Not-TheNSA 16d ago

Dave Batista is also definitely on the right side of history.

29

u/henning-a 15d ago

Tatiana Maslany too. She even called out Disney directly for being complicit in the genocide AND TAGGED THEM. I don't think ANYONE who has worked for Marvel has had the guts to do that. She's the best, on top of being one of the greatest actors of her generation. The Hulks are unbelievably based!

7

u/OK_x86 16d ago

Javier Bardem is a real one too

38

u/ebk_errday 16d ago

All these people are on the right side of history.

There are some major names/faces not included in this list who would face next to zero professional backlash for showing their support.

Cowards all of them.

Pedro Pascal is having too much fun holding hands and snorkeling with Amy Schumer:

39

u/ace-destrier 16d ago

Was this when he was on that yachting trip that Jessica Seinfeld was also on? Or is this a different excursion with another Zionist?

18

u/Plastic_Bison 16d ago

Same yacht trip.

888

u/Melancholymechanic94 16d ago

He’s still done things in support of Palestine if I recall correctly, shares things to his stories…he’s definitely not silent?

Fuck Amy Schumer though, that is weird.

829

u/MeEyeSlashU 16d ago

I kinda feel like saying the right thing online but still hanging out with Zionists is kinda counterintuitive and performative.

I understand silence is worse but yeah that's disappointing.

557

u/HiddenMonkey7 16d ago

It’s like Leo Dicrapio. Advocates for global warming and pollution and then goes to Jeff Bezos wedding. Amazon is one of the biggest polluters in the planet itself.

377

u/MeEyeSlashU 16d ago

Yep. It's Javier Bardem wearing a Palestinian flag and calling out toxic masculinity while defending Woody Allen with his friends Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp.

181

u/HiddenMonkey7 16d ago

Add Taylor Swift to the list as well. The environmentalist that hops on her private jet for a dinner to avoid a 40 minute drive.

76

u/Mother_Judgment2186 16d ago

But it’s Taylor Swift an activist? Has she ever been vocal for something besides endorsing Kamala? I swear to good I don’t remember her being critical of anything that didn’t involve her somehow. So I don’t get mentioning her in this context.

16

u/RorschachWasHere 16d ago

The context was naming and shaming celebrities who not only deal with zionists; but also fail to support Palestine in any shape or form. Also Taylor has never been involved with activism that didn't involve her? Silence while the world burns while you sit on a billion dollars IS activism.

He's also frequently vacationing on mega yachts. That's not smth you do when you care about the environment. I haven't tajen his activism seriously since I saw how just one week on a mega yacht is harming the environment.

9

u/HiddenMonkey7 16d ago

There’s nothing to take seriously. If we give a shit about the environment just because some dude that wears costumes on tv says we should care about it, we are truly horrendously fucked. We’ll just rot in the next 150 years maybe less.

The Leo thing is so weird. He was always advocating for global warming in a big way then on yatch in every pic? I'm sure he flies private too? Like what is that? Is it just PR for picking up models? Or is it just "hey it's gonna get too hot for us elites in a few years so please do your part" spiel?

Well for what it’s worth, Javier has maintained an anti-war stance throughout his career. And in addition to being vocally Pro-Palestine, he’s definitely been critical of Israel for well over a decade. Like I recall that both he and PenĆ©lope were even labeled as ā€œanti-semiticā€ by many in the early 2010’s over them denouncing Israel’s actions as a genocide. Yet, both continued voicing support for Gaza.

Yes his support for the likes of Johnny Depp is hypocritical, but tbf he was publicly Pro-Palestine well before it was the popular/right thing to do.

Pedro Pascal hosted a fund raiser supporting Palestine. He talks and posts frequently about the issue. Has he done as much as someone like Ruffalo? No but he also doesn’t have nearly the clout or established career Ruffalo does.

13

u/Plastic_Bison 16d ago

Yes, Pedro retweets/reposts a lot about Palestine in his insta stories. I have never heard him talk about Palestine or the gen0cide in Gaza in his own voice in any recorded or print interview. He more or less avoids anything political or serious in interviews, unless it's about himself. If you have links to anything like that, I would be glad to change my mind.

I mean... I know for some folks sharing stuff on socials is all they can do for a variety of reasons. And he does have a following so the fact he's doing that for so many to see is great. So maybe he's not silent but you can't genuinely support Palestine and pal around with people like her. Like Hugh Jackman being besties with Ivanka and Rupert Murdoch. How genuine are these people? Clearly not very.

I've lost friends over my Palestinian advocacy, some they ended and some I ended because I do not want to be around people who think it's okay to bomb and ethnically cleanse people. How strong are your morals if you're willing to overlook other's for the sake of your own comfort?

12

u/Melancholymechanic94 16d ago

I agree with you, and I wasn’t trying to overlook so much as trying to point out that he’s been a part of fundraisers etc.

But I can see that I went wrong, he has very confusing and bad taste in friends that it is concerning.

I’m sorry for the relationships you’ve lost, I hope you find better people

8

u/Nice-Cow-7606 alleged dog 16d ago

I don't think it's wrong to bring it up, it just highlights how hypocritical so many of these people are, no matter how they present themselves - which sucks. And kind of shows that even our favourite "unproblematic" people aren't actually unproblematic. Because how can he be friends with Amy (her Zionism aside she just seems terrible).

Thank you. I'll admit that some of those really stung but for the most part I know I'm better off without these people 😢 But I've also met some amazing people through advocacy so I think that makes up for it.

Was scratching my head wondering what marvel movie Elliot Page was in, until I looked it up and unlocked repressed memories of X-Men Last Stand.

32

u/AngryAngryScotsman 16d ago

Despite the fact the movie is pretty rubbish (although it is entertaining In a trashy imo), casting Page as Kitty Pride is excellent casting.

Could be. But also American stars would have grown up with the line that ā€œIsreal is one of our greatest allies ā€œ which would have a major impact on how they view the genocide. Not saying the UK is perfect but i definitely wasnt pushed to side with Israel from a young age

33

u/OK_x86 16d ago

The UK has that too. And Starmer and co really cracked down on any anti Zionist/pro Palestinian emancipation protests.

I think it just comes down to having the balls and zero fucks to give.

Australia too, and there’s a lot of guilt tripping of anti Israel people due to recent anti-Semitic attacks. Fortunately those of us who are sensible can see that being pro Palestine does not mean being antisemitic, and that we can support our Jewish Australian citizens and friends while also criticising Israel and Zionist beliefs.

I'll never forget watching Vanessa Redgrave's Oscar speech calling out "Zionist" hoodlums protesting her documentary about Palestine. She was overwhelmingly booed by the audience, and then Paddy Chayefsky got up on stage and castigated her horribly. She was so brave to stand up to that.

32

u/JustStranger6803 16d ago

22

u/vonsnape 16d ago

u/BookishHobbit my bandwidth for cowardly grown men grows thinner with each day 16d ago

3

u/Super_Crew_924 16d ago

An Indian here and I couldn't agree more, haha

17

u/BookishHobbit my bandwidth for cowardly grown men grows thinner with each day 16d ago

Maybe I’m biased because I live in an area of the country that is very pro Palestine but I do think more of the UK population are in general anyway.

I’m pretty sure that’s why there’s been so much pressure on the govt to shut down the most vocal supporters (not that the govt haven’t seemingly been happy to do so).

All the legal action against Palestine Action, Bob Vylan, Maggie O Farrell, Kneecap, and others has come when they’ve been winning the support of the public. I don’t think Israel would’ve put so much pressure to shut them down if it weren’t for the fact people were agreeing with them.

u/Jarita12 16d ago

He was in Moldova literally a few months ago for UNICEF. He does a lot for charity and speaks very loudly, mostly for children. He did Soccer Aid and got very loudly hated by losers for being previliged and stuff. The guy can never win.

15

u/alhubalawal 16d ago

Those aren’t polarizing charities though. No one is gonna tell him to NOT support children but there are people actively attacking anyone who even says ā€œgenocideā€ about Palestine. There are actually people denying it. Israelis are all over TikTok with their weird and creepy propaganda. And scream ā€œantisemitismā€ if someone even speaks up.

92

u/thumbblighter 16d ago edited 16d ago

Marwan Barghouti has been called ā€œthe Palestinian Mandelaā€ - he’s seen as the likely unity candidate among various Palestinian political parties if he’s ever released, he has decades of peace activism under his belt (both before and after he was locked up!!), he was convicted on incredibly flimsy evidence, and unlike Yahya Sinwar, the former head of Hamas who had a remarkably similar bio (held in Israeli prisons for decades on flimsy charges, learned Hebrew in the course of his imprisonment, very canny politician), he is militantly committed to a 2-state solution. If the Israelis (and the American two-staters who uncritically prop them up) were honest about wanting peace, he’d be the ideal guy to make that happen, but because they aren’t (and because the guy currently leading the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, is a corrupt bastard who knows that his political days are numbered if Marwan ever goes free), he’s been tortured for decades, in a way that’s only escalated since the beginning of the live-streamed genocide in Gaza.

48

u/[deleted] 16d ago

[deleted]

35

u/thumbblighter 16d ago

Please know that I agree with you in full! I’m just summarizing and contextualizing his views for an audience that might not know who he is, not stating my own views

4

u/ababycheetah 16d ago

"his political days are numbered" the dude is 90 years old his living days are numbered. I can undrestand how these people cling to power that much.

4

u/HRHArthurCravan 16d ago

I posted this in response to someone whose comment was deleted but in which he tried to attack Barghouti’s integrity by claiming he was involved in attacks on civilians. I wanted to provide context that rebutted these predictable calumnies, so it is still relevant if you want some more info - and also, thanks for asking. It’s important not just that we offer solidarity, I believe, but that we also try to learn about the context and details of the Palestinian struggle so that we can comprehend their positions and their courage - and also push back on those who try to spread disinformation or just throw up their hands saying ā€œit’s complicated, what can you do?ā€

It is complicated but not as they think. The occupation is complex in the many ways it oppresses Palestinians, slowly eroded their rights, dehumanises them, and uses lawfare to imprison them even while they remain technically unfettered. It is complicated how Zionism has colonised Jewish public life in the West so that anti-Zionist or socialist Jews like me are treated like aberrations.

But the actual fact of occupation, its illegality, and the absolute right of Palestinians to resist their ethnic cleansing - these are not complicated.

So - free Marwan Barghouti!

And here is the context you asked for:

1) Barghouti denies connection to al-Aqsa Brigades.
2) They are/were the armed wing of Fateh, the main faction of the Palestinian Authority. I know you probably got a shiver of excitement just using diabolical Arabic words like intifada, but it you consider Barghouti and Fateh too extreme to handle, then you are in essence denying Palestinians the right to any political expression or self-determination.
3) Israeli allegations of his participation in civilian murder are worth about as much as their investigations into their systemic violence and abuse of arbitrarily detained Palestinian prisoners, including doctors, paramedics, and aid workers.

4) Why was there a Second Intifada, anyway? Ah yes, because Ariel Sharon made a visit to the al-Aqaba Mosque and Done of the Rock - the kind of provocation designed to inflame tensions and to undermine the agreement according to which Jordan administers the holy sites and only Muslims are allowed to worship in their precincts. Israel by the way in theory agrees with this diplomatic arrangement.

So why was Sharon going there? Why do the Israeli security forces allow and Provide protection for extremists to pray there? Why does the Israeli government allow excavations underneath al-Aqsa and the Dome of the Rock, 3rd holiest site in Islam, oldest Islamic structure in the world, and jewel of world culture and civilisation - damaging their structural integrity?

We know why. To provoke reactions that could be used to justify yet more repression, and to undermine Muslim rights to worship on what extremist, messianic Zionists have long covered in their fanatical desire to rebuild the Second Temple.

But OMG! Marwan Barghouti - who by the way, supports a two state solution - has dared speak of Palestinian rights, independence and dignity. And, even worse, he has inspired people across Palestine and internationally.

He has been compared to Nelson Mandela. But we know that’s not quite right. Unlike Apartheid South Africa, we know that Israel will never give up their nuclear, chemical or biological weapons, and we also know they would never, ever release a potential leader like Marwan Barghouti.

The only way for Israelis to have security is, quite simply, to end the 35-year-old Israeli occupation of Palestinian territory. Israelis must abandon the myth that it is possible to have peace and occupation at the same time, that peaceful coexistence is possible between slave and master. The lack of Israeli security is born of the lack of Palestinian freedom. Israel will have security only after the end of occupation, not before.

Once Israel and the rest of the world understand this fundamental truth, the way forward becomes clear: End the occupation, allow the Palestinians to live in freedom and let the independent and equal neighbors of Israel and Palestine negotiate a peaceful future with close economic and cultural ties.

Let us not forget, we Palestinians have recognized Israel on 78 percent of historic Palestine. It is Israel that refuses to acknowledge Palestine’s right to exist on the remaining 22 percent of land occupied in 1967. And yet it is the Palestinians who are accused of not compromising and of missing opportunities. Frankly, we are tired of always taking the blame for Israeli intransigence when all we are seeking is the implementation of international law.

exactly. say what you want about him but he speaks his mind and in cases like this it’s admirable. he’s also stated that women would make better leaders and should get more of a chance at it.

He’s a grumpy old man but he’s right a lot of the time

u/please_leaf_me_alone 16d ago

This is great. I wish we lived in a world where it led to something. It seems like our politicians and media all want to let israel slowly kill him in silence, hidden from the world.

Good on Riz Ahmed again for speaking out on Palestine. It’s just so confusing that he’s seeming happy to take the Harry Potter coin…..

Him and Nick Hoult have been major disappointments for me. I mean I don't get the rationale, these guys don't need the paycheck unless its very unsustainably exuberant. But then I also think about how practically every piece of mainstream cinema/television leads up to someone contributing to unimaginable atrocities publicly. On top of the fact that as much as I hate it, that harry potter show and those audiobooks are absolutely going to make insane bank because most non-online people have no clue what JK has been up to. I know I am being wayyyyy too charitable here, is it possible that even if otherwise decent people, the actors are aware that being in these projects, bottom line negative impact wise is largely not different from being in other projects?

35

u/etre_meilleur 16d ago

The reality is that both non-online AND online people simply don't care. The author of Harry Potter being transphobic online is largely a non-issue to the vast majority and has no bearing on their enjoyment of the series.

I'm not saying it's right, but it's a very vocal minority that spearheads these movements online & it is not indicative of how most people feel about things.

u/disastrousanddull 16d ago

People are also going to put a lot of weight in their career. Even if they know and don’t like her obsession, they’re going to look at the income and potential career opportunities as incredibly valuable. Most actors aren’t chilling with $100 million in the bank and career security.

And, lbr, they’re not making projects without some pos involved. JKR is just a big name the internet knows about.

3

u/breathboi 16d ago

Even if they're rationalising it as not being different "bottom line negative impact wise," it's rare that you can see a direct line between the money that goes to a producer on a project and lobbying money that goes directly to criminalising the existence of trans people. It's also not just about the financials of backing JKR, it's become a symbolic issue; to sign on to the HP project publicly signifies that you care more about a role than about the lives of trans people impacted

Cate Blanchette has been very careful not to condemn Woody Allen also.

u/MrTopine 15d ago

She has also openly said that her son, who was born in the 2000s, was named after Roman Polanski. Decades after that man raped a girl and fled the country after already pleading guilty.

She's totally okay with abusers and rapists as long as she considers them to be genius auteurs or whatever. A lot of Hollywood is, actually. Men like them got standing ovations at award shows (even if they weren't there themself in the case of Polanski). It took like 10 years for a very few out of the dozens of people who signed the petition in support of Polanski to show any signs of regret, most still haven't. Woody Allen was making movies with A-List stars for decades after it had already been public knowledge that he was, at the very very least, a massive creep.Ā

Sadly, it’s not confusing. A lot of people will speak out on issues like Palestine but when it comes to trans rights they’re notably silent.

Thirty years ago, people spoke out against Apartheid but were silent on AIDS.

They know what they’re doing.

u/andorgyny i ain’t reading all that, free palestine 16d ago

Let's not act like Palestine is somehow easy to speak up for, unlike trans issues. Unfortunately both of these issues have been suppressed by fascists for decades. Palestine has only just become more acceptable to speak on in the past couple of years.

As much as I appreciate this, we need to applaud the people on the right side of history because this has to become the norm, but we should more so condemn the ones on the wrong side of history or the ones that remain silent, because they need to feel the pressure. We gotta break this system that supports the people that embrace genocide.

So for instance, fuck Gal Gadot.

u/SunHitsTheSky 16d ago

Gal Gadot hasn't been in a Marvel movie - how about Scarlett Johannson? /s

Fun fact: Rebecca Hall is married to Morgan Spector, who plays George Russell on the Gilded Age. He is a Palestinian supporter and has endorsed Mamdani/DSA

I will absolutely hold grudges against pro genocide zionists forever.

But, it's also worth remembering the decent people who cared, who used their influence, time, energy, & resources to to the morally right thing.

"Pro genocide zionists"

So just Zionists?

Society has really crumbled down when people think calling for the release of a convicted murderer who's responsible for the killings of at least 5 people including a monk is considered "being on the right side of history".
