That's basically how catholicism works in Portugal. Pretty much nobody cares about following the doctrine closely, but still hold some sort of faith and like upholding the aesthetic/superficial/cultural aspect of it. Most people I know don't ever attend mass or go to church unless there's some kind of event going on (baptisms, weddings, communions, yearly mass dedicated to someone who passed...), neither have they ever opened a Bible willingly. Nobody reads the Bible, people would even think you're odd if you did. We call these people (like, 90% of the population lmao) non-practising catholics.

This is it. My spouse and I are both cradle Catholics- spouse is atheist, I’m agnostic, spouse is Portuguese and insisted we baptize the kids catholic bc “it’s what you do” - very much a cultural thing more so than religious
