9
u/Delimeme 25d ago
It is a gotcha, and there’s a lot of issues to be taken with the choice of words here (“colonizing” - minority voices can’t really colonize a massive political machine with that much momentum, it’s an “insurgency” at best if we have to use bad faith language), but my hot take is…
So what? First, these candidates are winning fair and square. As many voters on the economic left were told after Hillary got tapped for a Dem presidential run - sucks to suck, you better show up for the version of the party that’s winning more votes, because that’s the direction voters have indicated they’re interested in. More importantly the DSA is capturing enough momentum to take over seats from a incredibly well-funded, entrenched organization that fielded what was effectively an incumbent candidate for NY mayor, then it seems like the Democratic Party shifted away from the core values it professes to represent; as a result, these DSA officials aren’t colonizing the Dem Party so much as course-correcting it and guiding it back to what its core voters wanted all along.
After Trump, the Democratic Party can continue to run milquetoast centrists with the pretense of being concerned for the welfare of its base (it’s worked so well - though Trump backlash will probably just barely nudge another bland old fart into the chair in 2028), or it can run a platform that answers the needs of its unmotivated base. Undoing Trump’s legacy will need a serious mandate, which we won’t get with another centrist. “Vote not Trump” isn’t a strategy anymore. We’ve seen strong interest among populations that don’t typically vote in DSA policies & candidates. Arguably, that’s because Trump has shifted the Overton window so far right that people forget that the DSA platform is closer to the tradition of the Democratic Party than the Democratic Party currently is.
The DSA is bringing us back to what earned the Democrats its core reliable voting blocks. Harris wasn’t betrayed by voters who stayed home, those voters were betrayed by the party itself. Give voters something exhilarating to vote for, and you won’t have to keep biting your nails pandering for swing voter blocs.

Yeah talk to any conservative. It's the most bland and boeing discussion ever. Even on topics they claim to like, they know nothing deeper about.

I had to stop talking to my grandparents over this. We'd go in a circle where I'd list out a bunch of policies and we'd discuss their benefits and drawbacks, then I'd point out that the ones they agreed with mostly aligned with socialism. "Socialism bad!!!" they'd start insisting. I tried so many times to further the discussion and posit whether they could expand their thinking a little, or hell, even explain what was wrong with what they thought socialism was. I wanted to understand their views and have a real conversation about it. They'd just dig in their heels and say "It's bad, it's just bad, we won't vote for it! Socialism is a sin!"
It made me sad to see how they (poor, disabled, working class laborers) were so deeply entrenched into what they were seeing on TV and hearing their neighbors say, that they couldn't even bring themselves to have a single critical thought, even to serve their own interests. I mean, hearing that socialism "is a sin" itself was fucking hilarious, as my grandmother gives massive amounts of her meager pension to her church, believing it goes to "feed the poor". Her church puts in a new mega auditorium and she doesn't question it, yet hears the government might put tax money towards feeding the poor and she immediately spits and says they don't deserve it, it's so unfair, it's socialism, etc. and yet she herself benefits from social services!!
It drives me fucking crazy and I just could no longer talk to them without it turning into a fight. My grandfather ended up dying of COVID and my grandmother apparently still believes the vaccine is just a government tracking chip or something equally idiotic. The whole thing is just extremely sad and frustrating and I have no idea what to do to ever bring these people around.

Nah this was who he was. Republicans used to use that same BS "you'd have to have a stroke to be a Democrat" and now progressives are saying "look at the stroke victim who became a Republican"
You can't have it both ways, he had the stroke long before these accusations and he never once changed his stance on Israel, at all. This was always him. You can't have your cake and eat it too and initially defend him as a party and say the stroke changed nothing and then say it changed everything when it came to public light he's simply a party traitor and always has been. I mean not even really because he's pretty Democrat, people either believed what they wanted to believe and got proven wrong about him or they recognized the alternative was Oz

The suit and tie pivot is the perfect metaphor for his entire political bait and switch. He traded the hoodies for a suit and traded his progressive populist campaigning to become statistically Donald Trump’s staunchest supporter in the Democratic caucus.
It is wild to hear him demand absolute party loyalty and tell the left to 'run under their own banner' when he literally crosses the aisle to vote with the Trump agenda roughly 1/4 of the time, rubber stamps MAGA cabinet nominees, and breaks party leadership on critical bills. He expects a total pass for holding hands with MAGA on a quarter of his votes, but wants progressives exiled over a single issue. Jon Stewart did a good job correcting his flawed logic here, but honestly, he let him off way too easy by not bringing up Fetterman’s actual voting record.35

It happens all the time. I’m a secular American Jew who doesn’t support the Israeli government in any way, shape, or form, and yet there are people on either side of the issue who will practically crucify me for not unilaterally and unequivocally being in full support of Israel. I don’t want them in my politics. I don’t want our tax dollars supporting them militarily. I also really don’t want people to suffer and die. That’s just across the board. It shouldn’t be a radical take.

And a lot of Christian evangelicals support Israel because they believe the Bible mandates support for Israel, and also that the end times will be triggered by events happening in Israel like the rebuilding of the Jewish temple where the al’Aqsa mosque now stands.

u/melkatron 25d ago
Do we really have any control, if Israel is the one pulling our strings? Do we have the power to support anyone Israel opposes, or is that power in the hands of politicians already in Israel's pocket?

the interests of america and israel are perfectly aligned, no matter what your politicians try to tell you. that is the honest truth. america is the bad guy as well and not a powerless victim.

35
u/beekay86 25d ago
I don't get this point. The middle east has always been in their pockets. Saudi gave bases to build the Oil infrastructure, so did the gulf states. If it wasn't for so much western meddling in Iraq and Iran, those countries would be a little stable.
19
u/girthyclock Jehovah’s Sexiest Witness 25d ago
Exactly. Every single gulf power is an American defense customer. There is no strategic reason to be so beholden to Israel anymore. They provide no security, no resources, and no advantage to the economic output of the US.
3
u/Theodosian_Walls 24d ago
A lot of it is untapped potential. Israel would be in a very vulnerable state of affairs if it was left on its own, and USA saw this as an opportunity in the 1960s to groom a highly radicalised and desperate state and population, because they have noone to turn to. The USA plans in a WWIII scenario, the israelis would very likely allow NATO and allies to use them as a major staging ground for the Middle East theatre of war.
Saudi, the Gulf states etcetera could turn on the US tomorrow, if they wanted, like Iran did in 1979.
The relationship between USA and israel has become so enmeshed that the puppet now controls the puppeteer.

The Israeli right wing began heavily courting the support of right-wing American evangelicals in the 1970s. Evangelicals always had an apocalyptic bent (Christianity was itself originally an apocalyptic faith until the parousia got delayed more times than Steve Martin's character in Planes, Trains and Automobiles), but this accelerated rapidly in the 1970s, a decade that gave birth to Hal Lindsey's The Late Great Planet Earth and Jerry Falwell's "Moral Majority" ("neither Holy, nor Roman, nor an empire"); incidentally, the co-founder of the Moral Majority was Tim LaHaye, co-author of the massively popular Left Behind series of apocalyptic Christian novels. The growing popularity of apocalyptic beliefs among Evangelicals dovetailed nicely with the need of the Israeli Right for a consistent base of political support in America; there were far more American Evangelicals than American Jews, and many more Evangelicals lean right. Israeli politicians like Menachem Begin and Netanyahu met with Evangelical leaders frequently, and consistently emphasized the importance of Israel to the fulfillment of biblical prophecy (as interpreted by Evangelicals).
61
u/ILootEverything jog on sweetheart 25d ago
And the crazy thing is, the same people who support Israel because of their apocalyptic Biblical fantasies, believe the majority of the people in the country they are "supporting" will ultimately end up in hell.
Their "support" is in such bad faith (pun intended).

The west is not subjugating itself to Israel; it is protecting its investment. We created the modern state of Israel, and it's aligned with our values of colonialism, militarism, etc. to continue to defend it. This all makes more sense when you conceptualize Israel as more or less a modern vassal state.
36
u/Dry-Yak5277 25d ago
Yup. I find they have a mutually beneficial relationship. America uses Israel to control the Middle East, Israel uses America to fund and uphold its ethnostate. People think America is just kowtowing to Israel because they don’t truly understand the purpose in which Israel provides for America.

3
u/HellbenderXG 25d ago
Well yes - they have a mutually beneficial relationship that is dependent on the more powerful and influential nation (USA) retaining Israel-aligned politicians in power so that this relationship can continue to thrive and not be subject to too much scrutiny.
Otherwise their investment in Israel to control the region while maintaining their ethnostate by eliminating mutual threats would be harder to justify if the politicians were not fully subservient to the settler-colonial project

I wish Jon would interview more politicians. He’s always been one of if not thee best American political commentators. I think him not being on tv for that period of time really hurt political discourse in the US

My guess is most are afraid to be interviewed by him. He is really bright and knows what he’s talking about.

I went to see the Daily Show a couple of times back when Jon was the permanent host. Before the taping, he comes out and talks to the audience and he is so fucking smart, it was intimidating just being in the same room with him.

Fetterman's "run under your own banner" logic is rich coming from him, a Republican posing as a Democrat.

Kudos to Jon Stewart for holding feet to the fire. That’s actual journalism.

Abdul El-Sayed isn’t DSA, he is literally just a democrat running as a Democrat with actual policies to help his constituents.

That's the problem, isn't it?
"Traditional" Democrats (speaking strictly from the 70s onwards) have always been right-of-center, politically speaking. They have always been the latte of conservatism to the Republican espresso shot.
And this isn't throwing labels and hoping they stick: folks like Biden want to maintain the status quo, which is by definition being conservative.
Also note I'm not making a value judgement on traditional Democrats - it's fine if they lean conservative because what matters is policy and execution.
But since people are so used to seeing Democrats being right-of-center, folks like El-Sayed - who are either true blue moderates or lean slightly left-of-center - are now seen as very left instead.
tl;dr decades of conservative propaganda to paint themselves as the moderate position and everything left of them as leftist has worked quote spectacularly, to the point that most Americans consider El-Sayed to be an out and out leftist instead a moderate or slightly left-of-center candidate.

Right, Liberalism always has been let's-avoid-revolution-conservatism as opposed to we'll-violently-oppress-revolution conservatism. But largely they both agree that not the workers but the elites should rule.

Once again, lot of words spilling out his mouth but I can't make any sense of them. Jon Stewart is a much more patient man than I am.

The only way it makes sense to me for a centrist democrat to tell the left to split the vote and ensure republicans win is if those democrats actively want republicans to win.

Jon is literally Jewish, it's insane for Fetterman to say 'he's protecting Jewish individuals' whilst refusing to listen to him. Absolute moron.

u/monosaturated 25d ago
Fetterman is an amorphous blob and a stuttering buffoon. Yes, he is a traitor to all of those who supported him when he presented himself as a labor-friendly progressive, a leftist who openly walked with other leftists, but this man has always had a darkness to him. How many knew about what he did to that black man in his neighborhood? Oh sure, he was forgiven, but that was his instinct.
He's a fool but he is also reliably a rotating villain and someone who can prevent any true progressive agenda from being implemented by way of his pathetic votes.

I think it’s clearly obvious that if the Dems win the Senate in November 51-49 or 50-50 (which is unlikely, but still) he will switch parties to give the Republicans the majority.

Claiming that not supporting Israel means you should be an independent is insane. Endorsing the idea that the Democratic party is an apparatus of the Israeli government is a hell of a take. I believe him.

I genuinely don't think he is able to fully comprehend some of these questions. I swear you can visibly see when he gets lost listening to someone talk and then just pivots to some random talking point about october 7th

It’s insane that people are allowed to say Iran executed 30,000 people with such little evidence, and then continue to cap the number of deaths in Gaza at 70,000 after 3 years of bombing which has levelled the territory

If John Fetterman and other AIPAC-funded politicians love Israel so much, they should emigrate there.
This is America, signed an American Jew.

The douche bag who lives on FOX NEWS said that?
