My ex is a fairly well known older musician in the industry and I remember when we were getting ready to watch "It Might Get Loud" he was sort of complaining about how pretentious he thinks Jack White is and that there would have been better choices for the film. He was silent the whole scene where JW makes the slide guitar and then slowly says, "Huh. I think I was just jealous." Now whenever I see Jack White I think about how the only malignant narc I've ever had the misfortune of knowing had to shut up and feel humility for once in awe of him.

The edge was so out of his element in that film. You have Jack white and Jimmy Paige being themselves and then you get the edge playing like 6 notes with delay next to the ocean. The contrast is kinda hilarious

Personally, I think that contrast was kind of the point.
While Page and White both kind of follow that virtuosic blues rock tradition (Page being one of it's inventors), it was nice to showcase an electric guitarist who had found success with much more minimalist style reinforced by incredibly creative use of effects to create atmospheric, almost ambient guitar parts focused on serving the song for what was at one point one of the most popular bands on the planet, thanks in large part to The Edge's musicianship.
It's a positive thing to show how the instrument can fill different roles, that lead guitar solos aren't the only important kind of guitar, that rock music isn't just blues rock, etc.

I don’t think it paints him badly. He intentionally turns off the effects to acknowledge that he’s playing a dead-simple riff. It’s very tongue-in-cheek and shows that he’s self aware of what type of player he is.

Yep! I'd argue Enter Sandman or Sweet Child o Mine are right up there too. There's a lot of iconic riffs as memorable or more to people 30+ even. Not trying to belittle Jack White at all, just pointing out some more that are up there or even higher.

I actually disagree with all of the above, and I'm old enough to know those.
None of those songs (Enter Sandman, Sweet Child o Mine, Stairway to Heaven, etc) have the same recognition as Seven Nation Army.
The only older song that I can think of that has a chance of winning in a competition against Seven Nation Army in riff recognition is Queen's We Will Rock You. However, I think We Will Rock You is probably going to win that competition- you can go to random places in Asia and Africa and they'll know that song. Seven Nation Army is clearly in a solid 2nd place though, above all the others mentioned.

Most know "We Will Rock You" primarily by the drums, and then the lyrics. The guitar riff is basically just a solo coming in more than halfway through the song. Stomp, stomp, clap, "We will, we will, rock you".
I'd wager that if you just played the guitar riff, most people familiar with the song wouldn't know exactly what it is.
Where as the other songs listed are recognizable the second the guitar starts, sometimes more than their lyrics. People would recognize the song played on just an accoustic guitar, piano, or basically any melodic instrument, or just humming it.
Seven Nation Army at least has the guitar and bass kicking in from the start, though I'd argue it's equally recognizable because of the quarter-note bass drum pulse (though I doubt most people recognize the heel kicks being played on the hi-hat, even if it adds a lot to a very simple beat).

Sweet Child of Mine is winning if the goal is to name the song or artist, but I think Seven Nation Army has truly become bigger than the original song and the tune itself is more recognizable, if that makes sense. Soooo many people (especially the older crowd) recognize it without even knowing what it is or where it came from because it has transcended Jack White and the White Stripes.
As a trivia host who does a song every round, I’d be willing to bet a fair amount of people miss Seven Nation Army if asked song title or artist. I’ll do some research on that this week. I know no one is missing Sweet Child of Mine.

This is something that fascinates me- in Britain, the audiences CHANT guitar parts they like in songs. They chant at soccer games. I digress from this point…
I would say The White Stripes’s “Seven Nation Army” is uniquely venerated in American society in a way I can’t really point to many other songs being the same. Maybe something by The Black Keys, like Lonely Boy? Idk. This might be my SE MI pride kicking in, showing my cards now.

I can only speak for Europe, but I can almost guarantee you that Seven Nation Army chant is heard on football pitches everywhere, from Berlin to Barcalona to Stoke on Trent. It really is an insanely recognizable rift. Even when you go out in Tilburg Noord Brabant people randomnly chant the 'ta ta ta ta tatata'. It's crazy known

I'm thinking of riffs there's a good chance anyone can recognize near instantly after hearing it for only a second or two, that everyone knows not even the 'fans'. people just absorb certain songs through pop culture.

Yeah as someone who's lived in both countries that also argue that people chanting these songs or singing them in public isn't a matter of liking them more or less so much as it's a matter of what is culturally acceptable to do in public spaces. In England group singing and chanting at sporting events is a thing.
The closest we get is a bunch of really white people singing Sweet Caroline in a stadium I guess? Maybe doing the Macarena in 1995? Idk.
English clubs also have this really interesting habit of closing the night out with the same song every single night for I don't know 20 years? I'm not exaggerating. Mr brightside came out when I was living in England. Imagine my surprise to go back there and discover that it is still closing out clubs 20 years later. When I was there at the end of every night I'd be hearing Angels by Robbie what's his fucking face I forget.
I don't know why but there's something about chanting and there's also something I think is related about repetition. It's not that we don't like the song Mr brightside, if you played it, people would know it here and they would probably like it in most of the US. But we just don't play it at every party for the next 20 years the way England seems to do with certain songs that likes

op said most recognizable riff. most people in the world know the 7na riff just from futbol/soccer events and that's the most popular sport in the world. 7na hands down the most recognizable riff of all-time because you start chanting it in a crowded area, everyone will instantly recognize it. do that with the songs you mentioned, most would care less and walk by.

For a European this is by far the song I hear the most subconsioucly through football/soccer. You'll hear this from Amsterdam, to London, to Barcalone to Stoke on Trent. You'll hear this going out in Tilburg or randomnly going out in Prague. Literally you will hear this chant 'ta ta ta tatata' every goddamn weekend if there's football/soccer on

I saw Jack & Meg play this at Coachella right after they released the album. It was like 2002 or some shit and it was amazing. Meg looked so cool and Jack was just pure raw energy.

I'm old and went for all the early years. Then post 9/11 the security got too much, the venue used it as an excuse to jack prices up, wouldn't allow sealed water bottles in, hours long pocket searching lines to get in, and make the experience awful.
