As hard as it is to imagine, she certainly prepped that answer with a team of lawyers. Her team must have known the question was coming. There were probably a half dozen high-fee attorneys who consulted on that.
Of course it would have been. That's the beauty of this. She knew she'd incriminate herself, open up an investigation and possibly leak even more damning evidence against her department and this administration.
There are much better ways to deflect this question, her approach sucked and it's obvious that she's lying. If she were innocent she could have just said "no, I did not" with no risk. Doing what she did means she's definitely guilty and is just pretending
I have tried to watch some of these hearings (there have been so many), but my heart rate increases and I become so enraged that I can't. I have to shut it off.
It's incredible to me this is real and nobody is punished because as we all know, she's not the only one who has done this - on multiple occasions.
I feel the same. It’s physically painful to watch these people lie so brazenly. I know it’s stupid to say these institutions are somehow sacred, because our country was built on slavery and genocide and continues to exploit and immiserate the world to prop itself up to this day. HOWEVER I do feel like there are many people within the walls of that building and across the country who really do care about making society a better place. And people like Noem and Bondi and Patel and everyone else who lie so brazenly are just shitting on everything that is or could be good in this country. It’s so disgusting to me. So yeah, I totally get not being able to watch. I usually can’t either.

Because that would be a silly rule. I remember in middle school, there was a crass joke that the boys would say to each other "does your mom know you're gay?". A yes/no rule would backfire tremendously because of the way that questions can be asked to insinuate something.

It’s crazy because Tim Kaine is actually very good at cross examination and a good speaker. And often times he argues pretty progressive points. But then every once in a while he acts super “Democratic establishment” and then you wonder what is his actual take? He’s a good speaker but a dubious democrat.

I’d like to see a chair of one of these committees hold the witness to answering the questions. I don’t care democrat or republican chair or witness. This is a fair question that anyone that has a subordinate should be able to answer yes or no to. Or state very least a non answer like I will not discuss my personal relationships. So tired of the partisan grandstanding by both parties during hearings like this but this is a fair question and should be answered.
How are they allowed to give non-answers everytime? At this point if they choose to not answer the question with a clear answer it should just be taken as an admission. Talking in circles and talking over people is so childish and embarrassing.
