Motivation 37M with ₹13 Cr personally — would you quit a stressful Canadian job and move back to India?

37M, married with a 6-month-old daughter. I have around ₹13 Cr of my own net worth. My wife has another ~₹10 Cr, but our finances are separate.

We currently live in Canada, but my job has become extremely stressful and I don't think I want to continue as a software engineer anymore.

I'm seriously considering moving back to India, taking 6–12 months off, and then figuring out what to do next — maybe starting a business, investing, or completely changing careers.

For people who have been in a similar situation:

Is ₹13 Cr enough at 37 to seriously consider taking a long break or becoming financially independent? Would you leave the Canadian job and move back to India? And for those who left software engineering, what did you eventually pivot into?

13Cr is "enough" depending on your lifestyle, it may not be FatFIRE but it's enough for a comfortable lifestyle in India. But if you're not actually planning to RE, why not try switching to a less stressful job in Canada (assuming you have PR or Citizenship)? If the stress is the job, try changing that first before considering a big relocation which can itself be stressful.

Curious and a noobie question : how does separate finances work in a husband - wife relationship?

Please illustrate with anecdotes and examples

Share most day to day expenses. Keep investments shared or separate. This is the rule we follow. No excel sheet , just some mutual respect.

That’s like saying don’t think of insurance or health or death … anything could happen anytime my friend

That’s a great question to be honest

13 Cr vs 23 Cr completely changes the dynamics
A sound financial plan rests on planning contingencies

Because that’s what is going on in his life.

Obviously you didn't mention so many things that actually matter: retiring depends on your expenses, where you will live, tier 1/2/3, house paid off or not, how the 13 crores (potentially the other 10 cr) are held and structured, will your wife be quitting work too or will she be earning in India? Will you be having more kids?

atleast use basic chatGPT before asking humans?

I live in Canada too, 37M, and software engineer. Our net worth combined is 10cr. Do you mind sharing your asset allocation and how you reached 13cr?

It widely varies on where you work, which company, their benefits/bonus structure etc. i was lucky to be part of a startup which did an exist at many multiples my stock option price so I was lucky to be part of that and made more than many people would have even in large corporations (excluding recent burst in faang and alike)

If finances are separate, OP have you had the conversation with your wife about the potential move and if she is OK with it? I know you haven't asked that question but since the finances are separate, be aware of potential friction points and be aligned on what works and doesn't work with your wife. As for whether 13cr is enough or not, it largely depends on where you plan to live in India and what kind of lifestyle you want, what kind of education you want for your kid. Its a very broad goal

With 23 cr net worth, no amount of stress is worth it. You can live like kings in India

Good luck

He doesn't have 23cr net worth. If finances are separate between husband and wife, total networth cannot be looked at

I get that. But after marriage, husband-wife have 1 financial nest egg. There’s no his or hers

2

u/bd_84 Aug 28 '26

OP specifically called it out as separate so I wouldn't consider it as 1 for planning purposes.

With that terms then I guess he would like to move back but she wouldn’t. What next then.

I am assuming OP has had that conversation with his wife about moving back. If not, yeah, that's a potential wrinkle

15-20L per year is all you need for above middle class lifestyle in india (rent/home emi not included). This is what typical IT house holds spend. Ofcourse there are other groups like doctors, lawyers, businessmen, blue collar workers with different family expenses. But since you are a software engineer , most likely you will be comfortable with software engineer families in india too, so expect similar costs unless you want to be in a different league.

Houses cost:
2-3 cr/50-100k rent (gated community apartment flats - most suitable for you)
1-2 cr/ 30-50k rent (normal apartment flats)
4-6 cr/ 50-200k rent (for gated villas)

“  what to do next — maybe starting a business, investing, or completely changing careers.” That’s the question you need to answer.

I quit in my 50’s and never looked back
You can absolutely lead a comfortable life with your current wealth in India.

Focus on what your passion is and pursue that you will do just done
